About 6 Second Straight
6 Second Straight is a heated brush that features a copper ceramic core, extra wide Thermo Bristles, and 3X the heated surface area, all of which can help you straighten and add volume in just one pass. How does it do this?
Each of 6 Second Straight’s Thermo Bristles is individually heated from base to tip, to ensure that every strand of hair that passes through is heated. These bristles also release negative ions to help straighten and shine without frizz.
On top of all this, 6 Second Straight features variable temperature control with two heat settings up to 450°, while remaining cool to the touch. Whatever your hair type, 6 Second Straight can help you go from frizzy fabulous in just one pass!
All of the manufacturer’s hype aside, you want to know if 6 Second Straight will work as well as the commercial makes it seem, or if you’ll just end up burned. And we’re here to help you find an answer.
First, let’s break down some of 6 Second Straight’s benefits.
6 Second Straight’s Key Features
Copper and ceramic conduct and distribute heat exceptionally well, which is why both materials are found in hundreds of other heated brushes just like 6 Second Straight (more about this in a moment). So at least from this perspective, it doesn’t appear to be anything exceptional.
What about the negative ions it releases? According to Self:
“An ion is a charged component that a chemical can be broken down into that can have a negative or positive charge. Your hair has both negative and positively charged places on it, which helps certain hair care products work better and the water in wet hair is positive; ionic dryers that emit negative ions cause globs of H2O molecules to divide into smaller particles that evaporate faster. The result is less frying time.”
This means that more than anything, the negative ions released by 6 Second Straight will only work to reduce drying time and decrease the potential for heat damage. Also, these ions only work on wet hair, so keep this in mind before placing your order.
Finally, we’re told that 6 Second Straight features 3X the heated surface area. But 3X what? Previous models? The competition? Without any reference point, this claim ultimately provides little value.
How much will all of these features cost you?
6 Second Straight’s Price & Company Reputation
One 6 Second Straight heated brush costs $39.99 plus free shipping. With your order, you’ll also receive a travel case and three clips.
All 6 Second Straights come with a 60-day refund policy, less S&H charges. In order to request one, you’ll need to call Tristar Products at 973-287-5195.
Tristar also makes several other popular styling tools (many of which feature the same benefits and make the same claims as 6 Second Straight), including Perfecter Fusion Styler and Perfecter Ultra, not to mention hugely popular products like Clear TV and Power Pressure Cooker XL.
With hundreds of reviews, these products have an average rating of 2 stars here on HighYa. Why? Most customers generally complain about one of the following:
- Doesn’t work as advertised. While a product might work in some aspects, their performance rarely lives up to expectations.
- Poor quality. In some instances, products were defective right out of the box, while others only lasted a few uses.
- Less-than-stellar customer service. This often referenced difficulty obtaining refunds, unknowledgeable reps, and high-pressure sales tactics.
6 Second Straight was so new at the time of our research that no online reviews were available, but this is all certainly something we think you should keep in mind.
Despite this feedback, Tristar had an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on 1,000+ closed complaints (as of 1/28/16). There, we found many of the same complaints as noted here on HighYa.
Alright, before wrapping things up, let’s discuss 6 Second Straight’s competition.
Is 6 Second Straight Your Only Option?
Even if you just started researching heated brushes, you probably know that you’ve got a ton of options from which to choose. Literally, whether you’re searching online or browsing the aisles at your local big box store, there are hundreds of similar products competing for your business.
Granted, not all of these will be designed exactly like 6 Second Straight, but many of them will be close enough—and will also implement features like copper/ceramic cores—that they’re worthy of a look before deciding one way or another.
Want even more motivation to explore your options? A lot of these products will be less expensive than 6 Second Straight; many by $10 or more!
Is 6 Second Straight Worth the Money?
Applying heat to your hair “breaks the hydrogen bonds that form between the keratin proteins,” thereby changing its texture and making it easier to style. This occurs whether you’re looking to curl or straighten it, or whether you’re using 6 Second Straight or some other styling device.
The problem occurs when this heat damages hair, which can make it dry, brittle, and frizzy. And to this extent, if 6 Second Straight works exactly as advertised, it certainly might help reduce damage and frizz, but only when your hair is wet.
But therein lies the potential problem. As we learned above, ASOTV products in general don’t exactly have reputations for working well, and Tristar’s products seem to follow this same path. On top of this, you’ll likely be able to find dozens of similar options at local retailers, saving you time and hassle if you decide to process a return.
Just remember: Whichever option you end up choosing, X-in-1 hair devices rarely work as well as the products they’re intended to replace, so you might get more performance—and value—by going with a separate flat iron and brush.
