About American Sleep Union

American Sleep Union makes two different FDA cleared oral devices that can relieve your sleep apnea and snoring.

Known as mandibular advancers, American Sleep Union’s devices work by fitting snugly over your upper and lower teeth, advancing your jaw forward about ¼”, and improving airflow. As a result, you’ll be able to sleep better at night.

Unlike most other devices, American Sleep Union uses a patented fastening system that allows you to adjust your jaw’s advancement, while remaining firmly in place after you’ve found a comfortable position. This works over 3 steps:

  1. Peel the lower tray from the upper tray.
  2. Place both trays in your mouth.
  3. Reposition your jaw ¼” forward and bite down. The fasteners will re-engage and keep your jaw in place.

Because of all these features, American Sleep Union claims their devices are “the most comfortable on the market.” You can even replace your CPAP unit with an ASU appliance!

But you already know all of American Sleep Union’s sales claims. What you want to know if it’s a good product that can help you sleep better.

We’ll answer all your questions here, starting with: What are American Sleep Union’s devices intended to address?

American Sleep Union’s 2 Appliances

American Sleep Union makes 2 different devices; a standard tray for snoring and a dual lock telescoping tray for sleep apnea. What’s the difference?

Both trays feature the same patented locking mechanism, but the sleep apnea version also uses 2 locking arms to sustain the jaw forward, which can eliminate or reduce snoring.

American Sleep Union Anti-snoring trayOn the right is ASU’s anti-snoring tray, which features the company’s patented locking mechanism. On the right is ASU’s sleep apnea tray, which adds 2 locking arms.

In either instance, American Sleep Union claims to use a separate 2-tray system to allow you to easily make a custom fitted appliance. After heating up each appliance in your oven, you’ll bite down on the upper and lower trays to make a cast of your teeth.

Then, you’ll take these trays to your dentist or doctor, who will mail them back to ASU. There, they’ll make the “necessary adjustments” and send it back to you, giving you a custom-fitted appliance for the most comfort.

How do you know which American Sleep Union tray is right for you?

What’s the Difference Between Snoring & Sleep Apnea?

Snoring and sleep apnea are closely related, but are also distinct diagnoses with different treatment approaches.

The American Sleep Apnea Association states that about 90 million Americans suffer from snoring, about half of them suffer from sleep apnea. What’s the difference?

Snoring occurs when the tissues in the back of the throat relax (just like the rest of your body) as you sleep. This relaxation causes a partial blockage in your airway, and the tissues vibrate as air passes through, which is why snoring is most prevalent when sleeping on your back.

If you’re suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), you’ll also exhibit the normal symptoms of snoring, along with shallow breaths or pauses in breathing. You can even stop breathing for several seconds, up to a minute or more!

Among other things, this can lead to low oxygen saturation within your body (a condition known as hypoxemia), and in a worst-case scenario can even lead to death!

Can either of American Sleep Union’s oral appliances address snoring or sleep apnea?

The Effectiveness of ASU’s Oral Appliances

Outside of its patented locking mechanism, we’ve reviewed several products that work essentially the same as American Sleep Union’s anti-snoring tray, including Zyppah Rx, PureSleep, and ZQuiet. As we mentioned above, these work by advancing your jaw forward and preventing tissues at the back of your throat from blocking the passage of air.

From a user perspective, we can see ASU’s locking mechanism as both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, you’ll be able to adjust the positioning until you’re perfectly comfortable. On the other hand, you might not find ¼” advancement comfortable (more can cause pain, while less might not be effective), providing less value for the money (more about this in a second).

From a medical perspective, oral devices have been found to be mostly helpful among a wide variety of individuals. This doesn’t mean they’ll work for everyone though. Why?

Are Mandibular Advancement Devices Your Best Option?

As we detailed in our Anti-Snoring Products Buyer’s Guide, snoring is more of a symptom than a cause. The root cause of your snoring can stem from a variety of factors, including medical conditions (nasal and sinus problems, medications you’re taking, etc.), whether or not you’re overweight, if you smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol, the position you sleep in, and more.

Trying to address your snoring? You might want to take a look at some of these underlying causes before buying any devices. You’ll also definitely want to speak with your physician, who can recommend specific treatments based on your individual diagnosis.

The ASU website attempts to address much of this when they write:

“According to studies performed by hospitals and universities, an oral appliance for sleep apnea and snoring is effective 80% of the time in mild to moderate sleep apnea and is under 50% for extreme sleep apnea. For this reason, American Sleep Union can only guarantee that our oral appliance is as effective as other oral appliances and cannot guarantee the results.”

With this out of the way, how much will you have to pay to get a good night’s sleep with American Sleep Union’s devices?

American Sleep Union’s Pricing, Refund Policy, & Warranty

To order your American Sleep Union tray, you’ll first pay $9.95 to cover S&H. If you’re satisfied, you’ll then be billed two monthly payments of $59.95, bringing your total to $129.85.

Interestingly, we weren’t given an opportunity to select which ASU tray we wanted (either the anti-snoring or sleep apnea versions).

All ASU trays come with a 60-day return policy, less S&H charges.

American Sleep Union’s trays also come with a 6-month warranty, where the company will repair or replace any defective products under normal use.

In order to request a refund, you’ll need to call American Sleep Union’s customer service department at 866-669-1340.

Where does all of this leave you?

Can ASU’s Trays Stop Your Snoring & Sleep Apnea?

If you’re a mouth snorer or suffer from mild to moderate sleep apnea, there’s a very real chance that American Sleep Union’s oral devices can help provide you with some relief.

There are some things to consider though.

First, remember that “FDA cleared” simply means that the device is substantially equivalent to another product already on the market, used to treat the same condition. This doesn’t mean that the FDA has personally tested an American Sleep Union device, shown that it works exactly as advertised, or that they’ve put their stamp of approval on it.

Next, although an ASU device can help prevent snoring or sleep apnea, they can also cause some side effects like drooling, sore teeth, sore jaw muscles and joints, and changes in your bite. These typically subside within a few hours.

Pro tip: Although American Sleep Union references a California Dental Union study that found their devices were the “most comfortable oral appliance,” ASU isn’t actually mentioned anywhere in the text. This means they were listed as another company or device name, or that they’re citing an incorrect study.

Finally, with its metal locking mechanism and screws, we might imagine that ASU’s sleep apnea tray might not be the most comfortable device around. Comfort is wholly based on personal preference though, so what you find comfortable someone else might think of as a torture device.

Our recommendation? Although American Sleep Union’s trays could feasibly reducing your snoring and OSA symptoms, it’s not exactly inexpensive. For this reason (and many of the others we’re talked about here), we’d recommend speaking with your doctor before placing your ASU order.

    Crooks

They are CROOKS. Do not send them any info or money. They won't refund anything to me and I have never used the product and wanted to send it back. Some guy who could hardly speak English said I couldn't get a refund.

    Buyer beware!

I ordered the trays and finally got around to taking my impressions and sending them in. The device came back and it was either someone else's impression or just poorly made. Not only did it not fit, but when putting it in my mouth made me gag.

I called the company and asked for a refund and was told that my trial period had ended. WHAT? It turns out that the trial period begins when they send you the impressions -- NOT when you actually receive the product and try it.

I said this was misleading and wanted a refund. They refused and said that according to their terms & conditions, I was no longer in the trial period. I argued the point and the "supervisor" hung up on me. Buyer beware. STAY AWAY.

  • It Works

I don't know why all the negative reviews because I have nothing but good things to say about this appliance. I am happy . I don't have to wear a mask or lug a machine around and I can move into any position while sleeping, not worrying about my mask being in the correct place. It's comfortable and it works. I didn't snore and I don't have apnea. I can't express my thanks to this company. This is so much better than any CPAP machine / mask which is way behind the times. I recommend this to anyone who is sick and tired of CPAP machine and sick of dealing with the companies for supplies. The charge for this in my opinion is too low. I would have gladly paid more.

  • I love this thing!

I have used this device for a week now and have been sleeping better than I have in over two years! My partner tells me that I do not snore while wearing the ASD device and that he can take out his ear plugs.

Molding the device was easy and simple to do as long as you followed the directions. Mine fits like a glove. The fasteners work well and the device remains on my teeth throughout the night without bother.

While it is true that my jaw takes a minute to realign in the morning and a couple of my teeth feel pressure from holding a position that is a bit unnatural for me during the night, it is worth a minute's discomfort for a complete long night of sleep for me.

I would recommend this device without reservation to anyone who wanted to try it before going though the greater expense of a CPAP machine.

Before I ordered this device, I read the advertisement. Everything that was stated was true, the pricing was as stated, the delivery was as stated, and the billing was as stated. I received what I ordered in a reasonable amount of time. I could not be more pleased. Thank you.

    Deceptive scam

I tried the device and it made my teeth and jaws hurt. I awakened about 5 times with a drooly mouth and a headache. Just called the company and the phone is disconnected. Are they out of business? I lost $130.00 and a good night's rest.

    Very Deceptive Return Policy

This company advertises that their sleep apnea device comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee. However, what is found in the very fine print is that the 60-day clock starts when they send you the kit for taking teeth impressions not when you actually receive the device. So, any delays in receiving/sending the kit, obtaining a medical professional's signature on their forms, and/or sending/receiving the device could eat up most of your 60 days. In my case, it took a while for me to get an appointment with my doctor to have the form signed so that I did not receive the device until the 60 days was almost expired. The device did not work for me so I promptly returned it only to be told that I would not get a refund of my $120 investment because the 60 days had expired. Do not fall prey to this trick.

    Scam

Received my final product in the mail today. It is just the mold that you send back. They take the blue part off and that's that. What they show for the sleep apnea is what I was expecting and I received just the molds I did myself, nothing extra was done to them. I called and guess what, my last payment of $60.00 comes out tomorrow so I can't even over night it because I live in Florida and they are in Utah. So the soonest I can get it sent back is Saturday, a day past the return date. So I am out all together $130.00 for absolutely nothing. I would post a picture but it wont allow me to.

    Buyers beware.

This device does not work! I can attest that it does NOT replace a C-Pap unit. FDA better check with this outfits customers. So I repeat, buyer beware!

I travel a great deal and opted for this device especially in foreign countries where one needs the use of a converter or transformer! Carrying a unit that can literally fit in my front pocket had a smile on my face and not carry a C-Pap machine. Yes.

For only $9.95 shipping, I could purchase a unit! It did not work and I sent it back. While in return transit, a bill came from this company for an additional $59.95 and a statement indicating an additional $59.95 would be added! WHAT?

I called the company, received the big bad run-a-round, and now realize it was a SCAM. I Googled the company and sure enough there are many complaints such as mine.

My credit card company currently has the purchase in dispute for the $119.90. Hopefully this is the beginning of putting them out of business!

      Mimi

I have started a "Grievance Page" on Facebook to see how many of us have been scammed by this outfit. In my experience, they lost my completed mold and still took my money. ABSOLUTELY refusing a refund saying even if my tracking number shows it delivered to them, the post office clearly lost it. Here is the FB page - please LIKE it to share your story. I am looking into filing a class action lawsuit but need people before I approach a lawyer www.facebook.com/AmericanSleepUnionFail.

They were most concerned with charging me the first $60

    • Kerrville, Texas,
    • Feb 19, 2016

My order was shipped after December 15,2015, when American Sleep Union charged me the $9.95 for shipping for me receive the FREE Trial. Before I could get to see my dentist with the appliance, I was charged the $60. Now I sit with an unfitted appliance, and have $70 less. I just want to send it back, but am out the money either way! I now intend to send it back, UNTOUCHED, and am trying to not be charged another $60. American Sleep Union may be happy with some of my money, but I fully intend to take my complaint to the Texas Attorney General, to see if they will stop American Sleep Union from committing deceptive practices against ANY other Texan.
