Election 2016: Voters Guide to Every State’s Polling Locations, Presidential Candidates & Voter ID Laws

The presidential election is almost upon us and you need to know at least three things: where you vote, who your presidential candidates are and which ID you need to bring.

We’re glad you’re here and that you’re looking for answers because about half of voting Americans, according to experts, are looking for an excuse not to vote.

Equipping yourself with the information we’ve gathered for you will reduce (hopefully!) the chances you’ll be one of the millions who, for one reason or another, choose not to vote.

We Don’t Show Up on Election Day

According to the Washington Post, more than one out of four Americans say they didn’t vote in the 2014 mid-term elections because they were too busy while 8% of people said they forgot.

Of the more than 200 million registered voters in the country, 56% voted in the 2012 presidential elections. These startling numbers don’t seem to have changed much even though states have implemented early voting and voting by mail.

An April 2016 article from Fortune said the top three reasons for not voting were:

  • Being out of town or being at work
  • Being too sick to go to the polls
  • Having too many problems registering

The Fortune list was sourced from a Bloomberg study that also highlighted the various reasons why we don’t vote.

“Americans are less likely to exercise their right to vote than citizens of many other democracies,” reporters Michael Keller and Yvette Romero wrote. “The result is millions of lost voters – people who are eligible and may even be registered, but don’t show up.”

Information Can Help Get You to Your Polling Center

We’re certainly not idealistic enough to think we can change those dreary statistics, but we do think this page will give you quick access to the information you need and, hopefully, make it easier for you to vote.

For each state, we’re going to give you the link you need to find out where your polling place is and a list, the presidential candidates for whom you can vote and your state’s voter ID law for in-person voting.

Some states’ ballots include write-in candidates. Write-in candidates are candidates who voters literally wrote in during their state’s primary elections.

However, just because you write-in Tom Brady or Mickey Mouse doesn’t mean your vote will count. In 34 states, write-in candidates must file paperwork to appear on ballots, Ballotpedia says. Nine states prohibit write-in candidates, while the other seven don’t require any paperwork from write-in candidates.

If you want to learn more about write-ins, check out this interesting podcast and transcript from NPR.

Finding Your Polling Location and the Candidates is Tough

Another reason this list is important? Some state websites make it insanely difficult to find their presidential candidates.

Pennsylvania, for example, has their candidate list buried on a page for people who want to be candidates, while other states like New Mexico had sites where simply couldn’t find their presidential candidates.

Trust us; spending ten minutes trying to find a simple candidate list is super frustrating. Thankfully, we’ve spared you the annoyance that comes with a poorly organized Secretary of State or Elections Board website.

The names you’ll see below are written according to the order and style in which they appear on each state’s candidate list. In one case, we provided the correct spelling of Rocky De La Fuente’s name because it was not spelled correctly on the Indiana ballot.

At the end of this list, we’ll give you a link to an article about media bias you’ll find helpful as you figure who and what you’re voting for, as well as a link to the Vote.org page that gives specifics on your state’s voter ID laws.
