About Bark Away
Attention dog owners: If you’re looking for a way to control your dog’s barking, Bark Away claims to be a quick, easy, and effective way of accomplishing this. Bark Away claims to use a specialized collar outfitted with a bark-activated device that releases a gentle citronella spray, which is claimed to instantly deter your dog from barking.
But is Bark Away really as effective as it claims, and is it worth your hard-earned money? Perhaps most importantly, is it safe for your dog? We collared some facts and here’s what they have to say.
Bark Away Details & Features
Instead of using painful electrical shocks, Bark Away is a new no-bark collar that releases a gentle spray of citronella that automatically calms and quiets your four-legged friend each time they bark. In fact, Bark Away is claimed to be scientifically proven to be effective without causing pain, fear, or any other unwanted side effects.
With this in mind, Bark Away claims to work over three steps:
- Adjust the collar and place it around your dog’s neck.
- Turn Bark Away on.
- Quickly and easily put a stop to unwanted barking.
Bark Away is claimed to be lightweight and comfortable, and their one-size-fits-all collar can be used indoors and outdoors. In addition, the automatic citronella sprayer is refillable and reusable.
With your Bark Away kit, you’ll receive the following:
- Adjustable collar
- Spray device and citronella
- Training manual
- Bonus shed ender
Bark Away Pricing & Refund Policy

What’s the Bottom Line About Bark Away?
With all this in mind, if you’re looking for a way to put a stop to your dog’s incessant barking, is Bark Away a good option?
First, as with most “As Seen on TV” products, we have some concerns that Bark Away may not work as well as advertised, and/or may be cheaply constructed. This is because most of these types of products tend to come with lower customer satisfaction levels than more mainstream products. While there are currently no online customer reviews regarding Bark Away, the most common complaint we found for similar products at this price point were that they suddenly stopped working and needed to be replaced.
On top of this, “As Seen on TV” products like Bark Away include steep shipping and handling charges, which means by the time you pay for return shipping back to the manufacturer, you’ll receive less as a refund than you spent in S&H charges.
In order to gauge Bark Away’s quality, we did some digging and learned that the collar is manufactured by Ontel Products Corporation based out of Fairfield, NJ, who also manufactures several other “As Seen on TV’ products. The company has a C rating with the Better Business Bureau based on nearly 300 closed complaints, most of which appear to reference poor sales processes (constant upsells for other products, receiving no order confirmation/invoice after order is placed, etc.), and poor quality products that don’t work well. As we mentioned above, this is very common for these types of products.
Will My Dog Be Safe?
Next, Bark away claims to be scientifically proven to be safe and effective, although they don’t provide any citations to back this up on their website. However, we did some research related to citronella dog collars, and here’s a quick highlight of what we found:
- This study claims, “While the results here are preliminary, they suggest that the collar may be effective for some dogs, but not for others, when applied by dog owners for the treatment of problem vocalization. Further research is required to determine whether the collar could be effective when administered by a trained professional.”
- This study concluded that, “Both electronic and citronella collars significantly reduced barking, with no significant difference between [shock and citronella] collars.”
- Even if citronella were shown to be more effective and humane than shock collars, there is still some concern about repeated exposure to it. In fact, this Health Canada study claims that, “Natural citronella oil may contain methyleugenol, which has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies.” This is in addition to eye and skin irritation, dizziness, and other health concerns.
Will Bark Away Fit My Dog?
Third, we have some concerns about the claim that Bark Away is a one-size-fits-all solution. After all, are we really expected to believe that it will fit a 150lb Great Dane as it would a 5lb Chihuahua? Also, by their very nature, dogs are active creatures, constantly running, jumping, and rolling around. If Bark Away doesn’t fit very well (and even if it does), what happens if it gets turned away from your dog’s nose? How effective will it be at that point?
Still Some Unanswered Questions
Finally, even though citronella collars appear to be more humane than shock collars, there are still a ton of unanswered questions surrounding Bark Away. Is it activated by a microphone? If so, how sensitive is the microphone? Can it pick up on other dog’s barks? How many sprays does Bark Away provide before needing to be refilled? When it’s time to refill, do you have to purchase the citronella through the manufacturer, or will other brands work?
Should You Buy the Bark Away?
Between its “As Seen on TV” status, poor manufacturer reputation, lack of clear evidence showing that repeated exposure to citronella is safe for your dog, and multiple unanswered questions, you may want to think twice before spending your hard-earned money on Bark Away.
