Can Protein Help You Lose Weight?

In fact, on their ordering page, BioTrust specifically recommends purchasing one bottle if you’re looking to lose less than 10 pounds, three bottles to lose 10–30 pounds, and six bottles for 30+ pounds of weight loss.

The problem is that just adding a scoop or two of protein powder to your diet each day isn’t necessarily going to help you lose weight.

Instead, you’d likely need to commit to a high-protein diet (such as Atkins or South Beach Diet), which often involves consuming much more than the daily recommended intake (50g for women, 60g for men) to induce a state of ketosis, thereby helping to curb your appetite.

In many cases, high protein diets also involve drastically cutting your carbohydrate consumption (sometimes to zero), which many authority websites indicate is the primary reason high protein diets help shed pounds.

Often, though, once dieters resume eating carbs, they find that a meaningful amount of weight returns.

In other instances, protein powders can be added to a meal replacement shake, although this involves creating a calorie deficit (consuming fewer calories than you use), and doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the protein content.

In short, (again, according to authority medical and nutrition websites), there’s insufficient clinical evidence indicating that just adding protein to your diet by itself will help you lose a meaningful amount of weight.

We already discussed different protein types above, as well as what the available clinical evidence has to say about their effect on weight.

Inulin is a starchy substance often obtained from chicory roots that isn’t digested by the body. Instead, it moves into the gut, where it then can act as food for beneficial bacteria.

As a result, WebMD lists inulin as “possibly effective” for lowering triglycerides and helping to relieve constipation.

ProHydrolase is a proprietary ingredient from Deerland Enzymes that promises to help maximize the bioavailability of whey protein, reduce digestive discomfort, and more.

Will BioTrust’s Low Carb Protein Powder Cause Any Side Effects?

According to the Low Carb website, “This product is manufactured in a facility that also processes eggs, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soy.” As such, if you’re allergic to any of these ingredients, you might want to look elsewhere.

Outside of this, if you experience anything at all with Low Carb, it likely won’t be any worse than mild digestive upset and gassiness.

However, keep in mind that high protein, low carb diets can sometimes cause kidney problems (including kidney stones), osteoporosis, and more.

Are Customer Reviews Positive for BioTrust Low Carb?

Low Carb seemed to be a new supplement at the time of our research since we only encountered three customer reviews, all of which were on Amazon.

There, Low Carb had an average rating of 4 stars, with most compliments referencing effective weight loss results and good taste. The only complaint referenced that it contains too much Stevia and is too sweet.

From a company perspective, BioTrust Nutrition is based out of Austin, TX and manufactures a whole line of supplements, including popular options like Brain Bright, BellyTrim XP, and Metabo379.

Overall, HighYa readers have given the company and some of their supplements an average rating of about 3 stars.

While many report great results, some also appear to complain about no results (this is extraordinarily common for all nutritional supplements, not just those from BioTrust) and less-than-stellar customer service.

The reality is that, on some days, even just a tinge of a hunger pang can be enough to derail our diet. As such, the more help we can get with appetite control, the better.

Because high-protein diets are widely known to be a safe method of quickly losing weight, without the intense hunger that can trigger a diet do-over, you might be considering one and wondering if BioTrust’s Low Carb can help.

The answer? It mostly depends on what you mean by “help.”

Is there enough clinical evidence directly linking increased protein intake with weight loss? According to many authority websites, while it can induce ketosis and reduce appetite, the answer is no.

As a result, if you’re expecting to add an extra scoop or two of Low Carb to your daily routine—without also eating much more protein-containing foods, getting plenty of exercise, reducing your calorie intake, and decreasing (sometimes drastically) your carbohydrate intake—you might be disappointed with the results.
