About Breathe Active
Breathe Active is a portable, disposable, silicone nasal filter that’s claimed to gently expand your air intake by up to 70%, and to provide drug-free relief from sleepless nights for you and your partner.
Each Breathe Active device is claimed to be small and transparent so that it can be worn day or night, yet its comfortable design is claimed to be proven to work 38% better than nasal strips.
Let’s take a look at how this works.
How Breathe Active Works
Breathe active is a class I medical device (more about this in a moment) that features two silicone O’s attached to one another with a thin strip of silicone. One O is gently inserted into each nostril, which opens the nasal passages and can potentially provide better airflow.
In addition, according to the manufacturer, the center of each O contains a “Breathe Active Allergy” filter manufactured by 3M that’s claimed to trap up to 95% of contaminants and allergens, without impeding air flow.
An example of Breathe Active’s design and how it’s inserted into each nostril.
You’ve got to admit that Breathe Active’s unique design and filtration system are intriguing, especially if you’re desperate to get a better night’s sleep. But should you buy Breathe Active? Consider the following:
What is a Class I Medical Device?
First, keep in mind that the FDA defines a Class I Medical Device as “low risk and are therefore subject to the least regulatory controls. For example, dental floss is classified as Class I device.”
In other words, while this designation might seem important at first glance, it really doesn’t tell us much about Breathe Active, other than that it’s likely safe to use.
What is Your Primary Cause of Snoring?
As we outlined in our Step-by-Step Guide to Finding an Anti-Snoring Product that Works, there are generally 2 types of snorers; mouth and nose. But regardless of where it comes from, snoring is generally caused by throat narrowing and muscle relaxation during sleep.
With this said, Breathe Active only addresses nasal airflow. As such, if you’re a mouth snorer, or if your snoring is caused by throat “floppiness,” Breathe Active may not be a viable anti-snoring solution.
Are There Other Anti-Snoring Products You Should Try?
In either instance though, you should speak with your physician about anti-snoring products that might work based on your specific diagnosis. This may include chin straps such as BeQuiet and RestRX, mouthpieces such as Zyppah Rx, PureSleep, and ZQuiet, or even traditional nasal strips, such as Breathe Right.
The point here is that the cause of your snoring is unique to you, and finding the right solution to making it stop is a personalized process.
Which Works Better: Pushing or Pulling?
When it comes down to it, Breathe Active is a fairly unique product, and its only direct competition might be Breathe Right strips, which also open nasal passages, from the outside. And if the online reviews are any indication of overall satisfaction, it appears that (for nose/congestion snorers) many have found relief using them.
In fact, Breathe Active’s manufacturer directly compares their product to nasal strips, but claims that they’ve been proven to work 38% better. And while there’s no proof provided to support this claim, it’s important to note here that opening nasal passages from the outside (as with strips) is generally easier than opening them from the inside (as with Breathe Active).
This is because “When you push there is one component of force that adds to the weight of the body and hence there is more friction. When you pull the vertical component of force is against the weight of body and hence there is less overall friction. So it is easy to pull than push an object.”
Ultimately, this means that while Breathe Active may be able to open your nostrils, doing so from the inside of your nose will require more force than from the outside, which could possibly lead to some comfort issues.
How Big are Your Nostrils?
Speaking of comfort, Breathe Active appears to be a one-size-fits-all product. As a result, the silicone inserts may be uncomfortable if your nostrils are smaller than average, and may not remain in place if your nostrils are bigger.
Are Customers Sleeping Better with Breathe Active?
Despite the length of time Breathe Active has been on the market (currently more than a year), there were very few online customer reviews available for it at the time of our research.
We did find two customer reviews on DrLeaonards.com, with an average rating of 5 stars. Common compliments cited reduced snoring and comfort when wearing. Conversely, one customer review on AsSeenOnTV.com gave Breathe Active a 1-star rating due to complaints of poor fit an inability to remain in place.
From a company perspective, Breathe Active nasal inserts are manufactured by Breathe Active LLC, who is not listed with the Better Business Bureau.
Breathe Active Pricing & Refund Policy
Two boxes (a total of 30 units) of Breathe Active are priced at $14.95 plus $13.90 S&H.
There wasn’t any refund information listed on the Breathe Active website, so we contacted customer service at (781) 763-7333 to learn more. However, a recording informed us that all orders would ship within 4-6 weeks, and all other inquires would require leaving a message.
Who Might Benefit Most From Breathe Active?
Chopping to the Point: Considering the fact that:
- Breathe Active’s manufacturer doesn’t provide any proof that its inserts can increase nasal air flow, or that they can work better than nasal strips,
- The inserts will potentially work only if you snore through your nose,
- There are dozens of anti-snoring products available that may work better based on your physician’s diagnosis, and
- The product’s website doesn’t list any refund information,
…we might recommend exploring local options before placing your Breathe Active order.
If you decide to give it a try though, it seems that Breathe Active’s filters might best be suited for individuals who lose sleep or snore due to nasal allergy congestion.
My Silver Bullet
I've been using nasal strips and they leave permanent marks on my nose, not acceptable! This product is way more comfortable and provides better air flow. Not only that, it is re-usable. What's not to like? I am grateful to finally find a solution that works well.
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
