What Is BurgaBox?

Published on: Apr 21, 2017

Built around recipes created by Celebrity Chef Paul Malvone, BurgaBox is a meal kit delivery service that sends you all the ingredients you’ll need to create a variety of mouthwatering burger, mac & cheese, and french fry dishes in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Once it arrives in an insulated cooler, unbox and cook everything using the simple instructions, and enjoy “arguably the best meal you'll ever have, cooked by you.”

There’s no doubt that Paul Malvone and his Boston Burger Company restaurants have earned their reputation for over-the-top deliciousness. But will this same level of tastebud-titillating goodness arrive at your doorstep with BurgaBox’s Feast Kits?

In this article, we’ll summarize everything we learned during our research so you can know whether or not it’s right for you.

How Does BurgaBox Work?

When you join the BurgaBox of the Month Club, the company will ship you an original recipe on the third Wednesday of every month, which you should receive in 1-2 days.

Each box is announced on the first of every month and is sent using a state-of-the-art insulated cooler packaging system to keep the fresh ingredients and certified Angus beef frozen and refrigerated.

When you’re ready to cook, the website claims your feast can be whipped up in 30 minutes or less—and they do mean feast. In fact, their website notes, “This is for REAL burger lovers, not for the faint of heart!”

And together, we’re told you can get all of this for less than it costs to go to your local eatery.

We’ll discuss exactly what you’ll pay for BurgaBox in a second, but first, let’s find out what you’ll get for your money.

What’s on the Menu With BurgaBox?

There are currently eight different BurgaBox Feast Kits available, each of which includes a burger recipe (8oz, 8/20 certified Angus beef patties), mac & cheese, and fries, and can serve two or four. Sides include 8oz of Boston baked beans and homemade coleslaw.

What will you pay for these “ridiculous” meals?

Are BurgaBox Customers Reporting Delicious Results in Their Reviews?

Launched in September 2016, BurgaBox seemed to have received mostly positive feedback from subscription-focused sites at the time of our research, including HelloSubscription, who reviewed the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot kit in December 2016.

They liked the included card, which featured step-by-step instructions, along with how to heat toppings and assemble the burger, and an inventory of all ingredients. You’ll have the option of baking or frying your fries, which they thought turned out delicious when baked.

They also found everything easy to manage since all dishes were bundled separately, along with generous side portions.

In the end, they called the box “incredible” and noted that it didn’t take any longer to prepare than other meal kits they’d tested.

In January 2017, Blue Skies For Me, Please gave their Barnyard Burga a five-star rating, while the coleslaw, fries, and mac & cheese earned three to four stars. Despite this, they concluded: “While we really enjoyed the experience, I don't think we will be trying it again anytime soon. It's just too much food for one serving and too many calories.”

YouTube channel Noreen’s Kitchen provided an in-depth 20-minute video review about BurgaBox’s Superbowl Sideline Spread. It’s worth watching to get an idea of their first impressions for each dish, but if you’re pressed for time, they felt BurgaBox got everything right, featured super fresh ingredients, and provided a ton of restaurant-quality food for the money.

From a company perspective, BurgaBox had an A- Better Business Bureau rating with no closed complaints, as of 4/20/17. Its parent company, Boston Burger Company, was founded by Chuck Sillari, Paul Malvone, and Sebastian Fricia, and was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives hosted by Guy Fieri.

Now, let’s look at the competition.

Are There Other Meal Kit Delivery Services Like BurgaBox?

While there are dozens of popular meal kit delivery services out there, including Blue Apron, HelloFresh, PeachDish, and Gather Meals, we didn’t encounter anything remotely like BurgaBox during our research.

And not just regarding their focus on burgers, mac and cheese, and fries, either. If you want a meal kit delivery service that’s comfort food-related, versus focused on healthy, low-calorie foods, BurgaBox seems to be the only game in town.

As such, it seems to live up to the claim that BurgaBox is “the world’s first burger meal delivery kit.”

Just because it’s the first, though, does this necessarily mean that you’ll get a lot of value with BurgaBox? Let’s address this point as we wrap things up.

Our Final Thoughts About BurgaBox

It’s clear that Paul Malvone and his team are passionate about bringing delicious food to the masses. And while it’s also clear that you probably won’t experience anything quite like BurgaBox unless you live near one of the Boston Burger Company restaurants, will it offer a better value than enjoying a local meal?

Let’s run some quick numbers:

Whether you choose the single-month or six-month option, you’ll pay $59 per month/meal for a Club subscription, or about $29.50 per person.

Comparatively, according to a 2015 Business Insider article, the average cost among 22 popular chain restaurants was roughly $29.30 per person—almost the same.

But here’s the thing: If you’re looking to treat yourself to a BurgaBox meal, you might be more interested in the overall experience (the unique flavors, cooking it yourself in the comfort of your home, indulging in a high-calorie meal, etc.) than about saving a few bucks.

Another thing to consider is that, because each BurgaBox kit delivers so much food, you might be able to make more than one meal out of it, further increasing its overall value. As Brownie Bites noted:

“While I have no doubt that there are some burger lovers out there who can down a whole burger and the side dishes with no problem, we ended up being able to make several meals out of the food in a single box for two adults and one toddler. One burger was more than enough for the 3 of us (once fully assembled, they are huge!) and the mac ‘n cheese was so rich that a small serving was more than enough to feel full and satisfied.”

After all, if you’re not satisfied, you can request a refund within 30 days and won’t have lost much more than a little of your time.
