About Genucel Dark Spot Corrector

Genucel Dark Spot Corrector is an anti-aging serum that’s claimed to reduce the appearance of age spots, dark spots, acne scars, and more.

In order to accomplish this, Genucel is claimed to contain revolutionary, all-natural ingredients that safely lighten overall pigmentation, brighten dull, tired complexions, eliminate discoloration, and even out skin tone. These include:

  • Lumiskin – Claimed to inhibit tyrosinase from producing melanin, which can cause dark spots.
  • Marine Hydrolyzed Collagen – Contains antioxidants claimed to prevent and repair damage from environmental factors.
  • Alpha-Arbutin – May help promote lighter skin and even tone.
  • Stay-C – Can help lighten skin and improve overall tone.

Genucel claims their Dark Spot Corrector is ideal for both men and women, and works by applying to clean skin 2-3 times daily.

The first time a dark spot appeared on your skin, you were probably surprised. You might have even thought to yourself, “I’m not old enough for age spots!”

So if you’re looking to appear as young on the outside as you feel on the inside, is Genucel Dark Spot Corrector the way to go, or should it be avoided? Before we get to your answers, let’s start with the basics and find out what causes dark spots in the first place.

What Causes Dark Spots?

Dark spots (also known as age spots, liver spots, sun spots, and more) are brown, gray, or black spots on the surface of the skin, which are painless and have the same texture as the rest of your skin, and can range in circumference from about the size of a pencil eraser to the size of a silver dollar.

Despite their widespread presence, the medical community isn’t exactly sure what causes age spots, although UV exposure is thought to play a key role. As such, areas of your body that experience the most sun exposure are more likely to develop sun spots, including your face, the back of your hands, your shoulders, and your forearms.

Also, it’s important to remember that some people may be more susceptible to age spots than others, including those who are older than 40, those with fair skin, and those with a history of frequent sun exposure.

Now that we know more about dark spots and how they occur, let’s find out if Genucel Dark Spot Corrector’s ingredients are effective for treating them.

Are Dark Spot Corrector’s Ingredients Effective?

Overall, it appears that several of Dark Spot Corrector’s ingredients (at least the ones we’re informed about) are proprietary, meaning they’re formulated and distributed by individual companies.

With this in mind, Lumiskin is manufactured by Sederma and is claimed to block tyrosinase, prevent hyperpigmentation, and impede UV induced melanin synthesis, all of which may lead to the reduced appearance of dark spots.

Stay-C, another proprietary ingredient, contains water-soluble vitamin C, which is claimed to be more easily absorbed by your skin.

Hydrolyzed collagen is obtained from cattle, fish, horses, pigs, and other animal sources, after which the molecular bonds between collagen strands is broken down using heat, acids, or enzymes. Although collagen is an important building block of healthy skin, unless they’re specially formulated, most collagen molecules are too big to enter the skin, making many beauty creams ineffective.

Finally, arbutin is an ingredient extracted from the bearberry plant that inhibits tyrosinase and prevents melanin formation. Arbutin is often used as a more costly alternative hydroquinone, which may carry some cancer and other toxic risks.

With all of this in mind, based on available clinical evidence, the only ingredient in Genucel Dark Spot Corrector that might realistically reduce the appearance of dark spots is alpha-arbutin. Most products featuring this ingredient include a 1% concentration of arbutin, although without a product label, there’s no way to know exactly how much Dark Spot Corrector contains, or whether or not this is enough the be effective.

Outside of Genucel though, are there any other treatments for reducing the appearance of dark spots?

Other Methods of Treating Dark Spots

First, as far as over-the-counter treatments, you have hundreds of options to treat your age spots, including Beverly Hills MD Dark Spot Corrector, City Dark Spot Corrector, and many more. For additional options, simply type the phrase “dark spot corrector” or “age spot reducer” into your favorite search engine.

However, keep in mind that while these types of products will lessen the appearance of dark spots, they won’t remove them altogether, which means they may reappear later. So, for deeper dark spot removal, you may need to visit your dermatologist and inquire about Retin-A, chemical peels, laser treatments, and more.

Before going through all of this though, you might want to try different home remedies for removing dark spots. While these are typically much less effective than over-the-counter treatments like Genucel Dark Spot Corrector (and certainly less effective than in-office treatments), they might be worth a shot if you’re looking to save some money.

At this point, we’ve learned a lot about the Dark Spot Corrector product, but what about the company behind it?

Can Genucel Dark Spot Corrector Lighten Your Age Spots?

As we detailed above, the only ingredient contained in Genucel Dark Spot Corrector that’s clinically proven to lighten skin is arbutin. As such, even though we don’t know the concentration of arbutin it contains, it might work to reduce the appearance of age spots.

However, keep in mind that arbutin-only creams and treatments are widely available elsewhere, and many of these options are priced under $50, compared to Dark Spot Corrector’s ultra-high $129.

Because of this, we might recommend exploring all your dark spot remover options before settling on Genucel’s product, and speaking with your dermatologist about products that might provide more bang for your buck based on your specific diagnosis.
