About HostGator

HostGator was established in 2002 and has maintained top-tier hosting services ever since. They currently manage over 8,000,000 domains and harbor 850 employees. Their hosting services are feature-packed and well developed.

HostGator Features

When signing up for any hosting package through Hostgator, expect full cPanel access, 4,500 free web templates, a $100 AdWords offer, unlimited MySQL databases, FrontPage Extensions, SSH Access and much more. HostGator succeeds at delivering and even over-delivering the technologies necessary to allow your web presence to thrive. HostGator also offers site building wizards to those that are not as tech-savvy. The feature set that HostGator offers to its clients is phenomenal and their high score stays consistent throughout review sites all over the web. HostGator also offers a comprehensive affiliate program that allows you to make money by helping HostGator make money.

Availability

Since 2005, HostGator has been able to maintain an overall 99.99% uptime. This is a spectacular number and just comes to show that HostGator delivers on its uptime promise. Site availability is important when dealing with transactions that provide you with your bread and butter. HostGator tends to not disappoint in that department and hosting forums web-wide seem to share the same sentiment.

Risk Mitigation

When something goes wrong, it is important to have a good backup plan. Rest assured, because HostGator has you covered like a homeless man on a stack of pancakes. HostGator offers automatic weekly off-site data backups, 24/7/365 server monitoring and a vast online portal with over 500+ tutorials and 680+ help articles. Signing up with service through them also entitles you to forum access to connect you with other professionals that use HostGator’s services.

Scalability

HostGator seems to provide a plethora of features and services, even in its most basic hosting package. Scalability is made easy through their 24/7/365 support team which can help scope out your scaling needs based on your site’s growth rate.

HostGator's Reputation

HostGator is a BBB accredited business and has been such since 5/1/2008. The BBB gives HostGator an A+ rating on an A to F scale. This is a spectacular rating for an accredited business. As we don’t live in a perfect world, we must always take into account that people will complain for insignificant reasons. In the past 3 years, the BBB has closed 117 complaints with Hostgator. While this is a seemingly large value, the 8,000,000 domains hosted on their system implies a large customer base. 117 complaints against even 1,000,000 customers yields less than 1%.

HostGator Pricing

HostGator plans begin at $3.96/mo with nearly everything unlimited and a full array of features. Definitely a great bang for the buck.

Pros:

  • Great bang for the buck
  • More features than the competition
  • Scalable
  • Accredited with the BBB and an A+ score

Cons:

  • 117 complaints with the BBB for the past 3 years, however this is a relatively small value given the large customer base

  • Good hosting, price & service

I've been using HostGator for years, their reseller account. Their pricing has worked in my budget. And they often help either via chat or over the phone (or once in awhile by email) when issues come up like spammers using a forum or form I have hosted on a site (& I'm no tech-geek to figure out a solution). So thanks, HostGator!

I give a 2-thumbs up here and recommend them. If you run into a busy time, just wait a bit and try back. Good folks there.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

  • Completely horrible.

I've been with HostGator for almost a year, they're hosting is horrible, I bought a reseller and after I got like, 5 cPanel's on it. The whole site was super slow, and they're support team thinks they know it all and is very rude and I am unsatisfied with they're services. I'd go with YourCPHosting.com as that's a better support and hosting than HostGator.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

  • Gone to the dogs

    • Jun 11, 2015

Used to be an awesome host but gone to the dogs over the last six months. Support is impersonal, and if you have a serious problem it will only get dealt with if you threaten to leave. Moreover, they will always try and blame your website before admitting they have issues.

If you have one or two hobby websites, then the Babycroc will serve you well, but if you have an E-commerce site or blog that holds some weight, do yourself a favor and get a VPS with dedicated management.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

OK for the cost but customer service lacking.

Have used HostGator for some years and found their service to be generally reliable. The offer competitive pricing and a good user/cPanel set up to control your account. Customer service is generally quite good although response times seem to have got slower over the past year or so, sometimes over a day just to update a ticket, not good when your website is down. Responses when you do get them are script based so its fine unless you need something out of the ordinary or have a non standard problem. If that is the case it seems to depend on who is dealing with the problem as to whether you will actually get the help you need. Also, I guess due to the language barrier, sometimes support can come across as rather rude, I don't think they mean to be rude but the wording of some responses do often gives this impression. Overall I would recommend them as a budget host who are generally reliable. Don't be taken in by the 99.9% uptime though, I don't know how they get away with claiming that as we've lost several days over the year or so we have been using them.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
