About Lava Thaw
Manufactured by Telebrands Corporation, Lava Thaw claims to be a revolutionary kitchen miracle that absorbs heat from the air and releases it back into frozen food, naturally defrosting it in minutes. However, Lava Thaw’s thermal transfer technology is claimed to remain cool to the touch throughout the process, all without the use of chemicals, batteries, wires, or microwaves.
When being used, Lava Thaw’s unique slant design is claimed to slide moisture out of the way, and its non-porous surface is claimed to clean up quickly. And if you want to be absolutely sure that you’re Lava Thaw is fully decontaminated when you’re done, it’s also dishwasher safe.
Lava Thaw Pricing & Refund Policy
2 Lava Thaws and the Aero Knife, which is claimed to be sharp as a razor and to never allow food to stick, are priced at $35.97 ($15.98 of which belongs to S&H fees).
The Lava Thaw comes with a 30-day refund policy, less S&H fees, which we’ll talk more about this in a moment. In order to initiate the refund process, you’ll need to contact customer service at 855-668-1655.
What Do Other Consumers Have to Say About Lava Thaw?
Lava Thaw appears to be a very new product (URL registered July 2014), and as such currently has no online customer reviews. However, the product is manufactured by Telebrands based out of Fairfield, NJ, the original “As Seen on TV” company, who makes many other popular products such as Amish Secret, Hurricane 360 Spin Mop, and Slip Stone Pan. If HighYa customer reviews for these products are any indication of what you might expect with Lava Thaw, you could end up finding that it doesn’t work as advertised and/or is of poor quality. On top of this, if you were to contact customer service, you might experience rude personnel who are unable to provide answers to your questions, and numerous upsells during your call.
Also, it’s important to note that Telebrands has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on more than 1,770 closed complaints (as of 10/20/14). And of these, 1,238 customers, or roughly 60%, were dissatisfied with the business’s response to their complaints.
Is Lava Thaw Really a “Kitchen Miracle?”
When it comes down to it, can you realistically expect Lava Thaw to be a “kitchen miracle” that can defrost meat in a matter of minutes? Perhaps, but keep the following in mind:
Playing the “Contaminant Keep-Away” Game
Although Lava Thaw is claimed to be dishwasher-safe so that you can remove as many contaminants as possible, while it’s being used, you may need to get creative in order to keep any contaminants contained in the meat from reaching your countertops.
This is because, although Lava Thaw’s slanted design removes moisture, it will cause the contaminants contained in this moisture to run onto your counters. While this could be alleviated somewhat by using paper towels, a better option might be to rest the Lava Thaw inside a large, rectangular casserole pan, which can be dumped in your sink afterward.
High S&H Charges
Next, most ASOTV products feature high, non-refundable S&H charges, Lava Thaw included. In fact, if you’re dissatisfied with the product and decide to return it, you’ll immediately be out $15.98 in S&H, in addition to what it will cost you to ship it back to the manufacturer.
When you add it all up, you could end up spending just as much (if not more) in S&H charges than you’ll receive as a refund.
While you can opt out of having your information shared, it’s likely that you’ll receive spam and/or sales calls until that occurs.
Bottom line: Do You need the Lava Thaw?
If you find that you regularly forget to thaw meat in advance, which leaves you scrambling for dinner ideas at the last moment, then gambling $20 in S&H fees might be worthwhile for the Lava Thaw.
