About Liberty Lantern

Liberty Lantern is an “As Seen on TV” antique style lantern that claims to feature 16 ultra-bright LED light bulbs that last up to 12,000 hours, in addition to 2 USB ports for recharging any mobile device, including cell phones, tablets, e-readers, MP3 players, and more. In addition, Liberty Lantern claims to be rechargeable via solar and indoor light, an attached hand crank, an AC wall adapter, as well as via its USB ports.

With its multiple recharging capabilities, the water-resistant Liberty Lantern is claimed to help you avoid spending money on batteries while remaining cool to the touch, and to radiate light all throughout the room. In addition, Liberty Lantern can service multiple purposes, since its dimmer adjusts from a bright light to a gentle, flickering candlelight glow, creating the perfect atmosphere for whatever you need.

Liberty Lantern Pricing & Refund Policy

Liberty Lantern is priced at $19.95 plus $9.95 S&H. Like most “As Seen on TV” products, you’ll need to purchase a second lantern for an additional $9.95 S&H, bringing your total to $39.85.

With your order, you’ll also receive a bonus pocket size collapsible lantern, which also doubles as a flashlight and an emergency beam.

Liberty Lantern comes with a 30-day refund policy, less S&H charges. In order to initiate the refund process, you’ll need to contact customer service at 862-437-1111 x14.

Important note: During the checkout process, be sure to check the shipping insurance box to decline (unless you legitimately want the service). Otherwise, you’ll be charged an additional $1.99, which you may not initially notice since an order total isn’t displayed.

Can Liberty Lantern Provide Light without Worrying About Batteries?

We’re always looking for gadgets that can help simplify our lives, provide convenience, and even help us out in an emergency. But when it comes down to it, can you reasonably expect Liberty Lantern to effectively provide all of this? Maybe, but keep the following in mind:

Customer Reviews for “As Seen on TV” Products

Although Liberty Lantern’s URL was first registered in July 2013, there aren’t any online customer reviews regarding the product (note: there was a previous product called Liberty Lantern, but it featured a completely different design). However, Liberty Lantern is manufactured by Inventel, and up-and-coming “As Seen on TV” manufacturer who also makes Gripeez, Butterfly Abs, and several more.

This is relevant, because in general, ASOTV products tend to come with multiple customer complaints of not working as advertised and of being poor quality. While this may not necessarily be the case with Liberty Lantern, it’s an important point to consider.

Product Performance

Quality and performance issues aside, keep in mind that according to the Liberty Lantern website, outdoor recharging can take up to 10 hours, indoor up to 12 hours, and 2.5 hours via USB. In addition, every 5-7 turns of the crank adds about 2-3 minutes of light. Also, there is no indication on the product’s website that it comes with an AC adapter for wall charging.

While the crank is certainly a feature that could come in handy during an emergency, any other recharging method could be considered lengthy, which may not be of much use when you need it the most. Based on our experience and research/per our observation, from a price perspective, we might recommend exploring additional options at local big box retailers or outdoor stores.

Let's do the math on S&H Charges

Next, Liberty Lantern’s non-refundable S&H charges total $19.90, which is just a nickel shy of the price of the product itself. This means that by the time you factor in the price of shipping the product back to the manufacturer, you’ll likely end up paying more in S&H charges than you’ll receive as a refund.

Mind Your Business

Finally, according to the Liberty Lantern Privacy Policy, “From time to time, we make the e-mail addresses of those who access our site available to other reputable organizations whose products or services we think you might find interesting.” In layman’s terms, this means you’ll likely receive spam or sales calls soon after placing your Liberty Lantern order.

Bottom line:

Considering Liberty Lantern’s “As Seen on TV” status, its high shipping and handling charges, and the lack of online customer reviews, you may want to shop for a similar product at a local retailer.

Pros:

  • Claims to be rechargeable via solar and indoor light, the attached hand crank, an AC wall adapter, as well as via USB ports.
  • Claims to charge almost any electronic device, including cell phones, tablets, e-readers, MP3 players, and more.
  • 30-day refund policy.

Cons:

  • “As Seen on TV” products tend to have low customer satisfaction ratings.
  • Refund policy doesn’t include high S&H charges.
  • No toll-free number for customer service.

    Rip off

This product is simply a poorly made piece of junk! I just ordered two of them, and neither one of them ever would charge by any means. They are completely useless, and for such a high price and ridiculous shipping charges. Save your money, don't even think about ordering these, I think the whole thing is simply a scam and a rip off.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    Ditto

I messed up ordering, and ended up with four broken lanterns, and during economic hard times no less. I thought that I bought just two, but instead just messed up the ordering, like someone else here. I called right away and left messages to cancel, but my call was never acknowledged. I just received an email saying the items had shipped.

The lanterns arrived, but none of them work unless plugged in. And they were going to be gifts, so sad. It appears that the Nicd battery pack inside is bad in all of them, but it might not be a big deal to replace. Again, as others have reported, it is impossible to return due to the reverse shipping charges.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    Horrible product

    • Milwaukee, WI,
    • Feb 10, 2016

I was dumb enough to buy two of these things. NEITHER of them will charge, not at all and not for ANY length of time, to produce ANY light. They only work while plugged into the charging device, and then they work great, which really kills the whole idea of having a light source when the power goes out. Unplug if from the charging device, and you got nothing. Pure JUNK. Do NOT waste ANY time or money on this GARBAGE.

    Rp Off

I bought a Liberty Lantern 2 days ago and it charged for 10 hours and it STILL doesn't work. It has to be plugged in and it doesn't even have an a/c outlet for charging. It is a piece of junk and I am going to get my money back. This pisses me off. It was made here? This is why I do not buy AMERICAN made products. They are not worth the money the USA charges. I would rather pay $9.99 per month than the price I paid for 1 lantern. Go China.

    Nice Emergency Lighting Item

    • Philadelphia, PA,
    • Feb 11, 2015

I bought these lanterns to have as an emergency lighting item for the house. I tested it out for two days and it functioned as advertised. "Better to have and not need, than to need and not have!" is my motto. I use them as an added centerpiece to the dining room table so we know exactly where they are in case we ever need them. We have neighborhood power failures about twice a year that generally last less than 12 hours.

    Arrived broken

    • Upstate NY,
    • Jan 27, 2015

The place for the micro USB port socket is just a hole in the case, no socket. I hear something loose in the base when I turn the lantern over, indicating that the socket broke off, maybe a circuit board. Called the phone number in the manual, either busy or a fax machine each time. Phone number shows an extension of 14, it never gets to the extension, just a busy signal or a fax.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
