About Lumbar Express
Lumbar Express is claimed to be a portable cushion made of soft, velvety material that auto-inflates to provide instant comfort and support for your back, neck, or seat, wherever you are, without the need for pumps or batteries. In order to accomplish this, Lumbar Express is claimed to work over 3 steps:
- Unroll the Lumbar Express.
- Open the air tube to automatically inflate in seconds.
- Fold the tube and tuck it into the attached pocket, which provides an instant seal.
And when you’re finished, Lumbar Express can be deflated by rolling it up and squeezing the air out, and then safely storing it away in your handbag or a drawer.
Whether you sit all day in the office, experience back pain when driving or flying, or are just looking to align your spine through the day, can you expect Lumbar Express to provide a good amount of value for the money? Consider the following:
What Exactly Is Lumbar Express?
Although the Lumbar Express commercial doesn’t show an up-close shot of the cushion, it basically appears to be 2 “velvety” pieces of vinyl joined together with a valve that’s opened using your fingers. And while this may provide you with some level of relief from your lower back pain, it doesn’t appear that Lumbar Express is adjustable.
In other words, it appears that it’s either fully inflated or it’s not.
What’s Causing Your Back Pain?
As we discussed in our Winning the Battle Against Sciatica & Chronic Back Pain article, back pain can be a symptom of a wide variety of conditions, including injury, disease (especially degenerative disc), heredity, sciatica, and more. However, as the name might imply, Lumbar Express appears to focus primarily on cushioning and aligning the lower portion of your back. As such, if your back pain is generating from another part of your body, Lumbar Express may not provide any kind of relief.
Are Lower Back Pillows Effective for Pain Relief?
According to Spine-Health.com, “A lower back support pillow helps provide support for the inward curve in the lumbar spine,” and can fill “the natural gap that is created between the lower spine and the chair” to relieve “muscle tension and pain in the lower back and legs (e.g. sciatica).”
In other words, as we mentioned above, depending on the cause of your back pain, Lumbar Support may be a viable option for relief.
Keep Your Options Open
Finally, a simple online search for “lower back pillows” will provide you with thousands of results, many of which come from more mainstream manufacturers and at lower prices than Lumbar Express. In fact, a quick visit to a local big box retailer will likely provide you with at least a few options related to lower back pillows, which could save you time and money in the event you’re dissatisfied and decide to process a return.
Where Art Thou o’ Lumbar Express Customers?
Although Lumbar Express is a very new product and didn’t have any online customer reviews available at the time of our research, we did learn that it’s manufactured by TeleBrands, a major player within the As Seen on TV industry. As such, TeleBrands also makes other popular ASOTV products such as Ankle Genie, Pocket Hose Ultra, Wow Cup, and many more.
Among HighYa readers, these products have an average rating of 1.75 stars (as of 1/27/15), with some of the most common complaints citing poor quality products that don’t work as advertised (or at all), excessive S&H charges (we’ll talk more about this in the following section), and poor customer service (numerous upsells during calls, unknowledgeable staff, etc.). Granted, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll experience the same with Lumbar Express, but it’s worth being wary of.
From a company perspective, TeleBrands holds an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on more than 1,600 closed complaints. Of these, the most common complaints reference the same as those noted by HighYa readers, in addition to long shipping times, unwanted items added to orders, and autoship enrollments.
Lumbar Express Pricing & Refund Policy
2 Lumbar Expresses are priced at $10, plus $13.98 S&H, bringing your total to $23.98.
As with most TeleBrands products, Lumbar Express comes with a 30-day refund policy, less S&H charges. To put this in perspective, if you decide to return your Lumbar Expresses, you’ll immediately lose almost $14 in S&H charges, in addition to whatever it will cost you to send the products back to the manufacturer. Because of this, after everything is said and done, you could end up spending twice as much in S&H charges as you’ll receive as a refund.
With this said, in order to request a refund you’ll need to contact customer service at 855-668-1655.
Is Lumbar Express Your Answer to Lower Back Pain?
Chopping to the Point: While it’s entirely possible that Lumbar Express can provide some relief from your lower back pain, we’d recommend speaking with your physician about effective treatment options based on your specific diagnosis, before spending your hard-earned money on something that may or may not work.
