About Magic Mesh

Released in 2011, Magic Mesh is a hands-free screen door that uses magnets to instantly open as you walk in, and close as you walk out.

Manufactured by Allstar Products Group and based out of Wallingford, CT, Magic Mesh claims to “keep fresh air in, and bugs out!” The company states that Magic Mesh can be used for a wide variety of applications, including regular door frames, sliding doors, and RV campers, and is even an ideal solution for allowing pets easy access to the indoors.

How Magic Mesh Works

Magic Mesh instantly opens and closes using 18 strategically placed magnets that come apart and snap together as you pass through. Each Magic Mesh screen door is constructed of polyester, and measures 20 inches wide and 83 inches tall. With two screen doors per set, this means that doorways as wide as 40 inches can be covered, making them a possible solution for numerous types of entryways. It’s important to note that, while Magic Mesh will work with several types of doors, including regular door frames, sliding doors, and RV campers, it will not properly work with double or french doors.

According to the Magic Mesh website, installation is very simple, and can be completed in seconds. The packaging comes with all essential parts, and no tools are required. We’ve included brief instructions below, though the full process can also be found here:

  1. Thoroughly wipe the frame’s surface clean, which should never be anything other than wood, where it will come into contact with the Magic Mesh doors. You’ll then align the two screens (e.g. the left and right units), and snap the magnets together.
  2. Next, you’ll apply the adhesive strips to the door frame, using the included diagram as a guide. When applying, make sure to hold each adhesive strip firmly in place for 30 seconds.
  3. Repeat Step Two for all contact points, and make sure to hang the Magic Mesh screen door high enough so that it does not come in contact with the ground.

Magic Mesh Pricing

The regular price for Magic Mesh is $19.95, plus $7.95 shipping and handling. However, a buy one, get one free offer is currently displayed on their website. Simply pay an additional $7.95 to cover the extra shipping and handling.

Magic Mesh comes with a 30-day money back guarantee—simply return the product if you’re unsatisfied for any reason, and receive a full refund, minus shipping and handling charges.

Pros:

  • Fairly inexpensive at $19.95, and includes a second set of doors for free
  • Quick and simple installation
  • Intended concept is rather impressive

Cons:

As with many “As Seen on TV” products, Magic Mesh has its fair share of complaints, including:

  • Magnets tend to fall off, and are not strong enough to keep the doors closed during even the slightest of breezes.
  • Adhesive material that attaches to door frame loses its sticking power in a matter of days, resulting in doors falling off.
  • Product does not work as effectively as advertised.

I purchased this Magic Mesh screen door on April 8th at my local WalMart. In about a month it started to unravel, felt like I was walking into a spider web, I trimmed loose ends with scissors BUT came back! The other day the very bottom magnet fell off and in my disgust, I tore it down and tossed it! The odd part is that the box it came in had more quality than the screen door it contained! So buyer beware!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    Works great, falls apart quickly.

Magic Mesh works as advertised but starts falling apart within a few days. The seam stitching starts fraying almost immediately.

That being said, I apply gorilla tape around the outside edges and the fraying is prevented and has lasted two summers with the same piece. If the manufacturer did something similar from the beginning, anyone with a flimsy screen door would pay double for these things. Great idea, works as advertised, crap durability. I would still recommend it with the idea of reinforcing the outside seams with duck or gorilla tape

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

    Some problems

    • Port Saint Lucie, FL,
    • Jul 7, 2015

We got this after seeing it at someone else's home and we wanted to put it on our porch door so the dogs could go in and out and the concept was good. The problem was, the Velcro tape did not want to stick well so we needed to bolt it down. Then there is the wind, we have a really great breeze, problem is, it kept pulling apart with the strong breeze. We still like it as it does still discourage free reign of bugs flying in. It had done what we needed by allowing our dogs an easy way in and out without the need for installing a doggy door on the porch. I still would recommend this product in particular circumstances while taking into account how much wind occurs in your area.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

    Hysterical results!

    • Central TX, USA,

I love to leave the door open when the weather is nice, but couldn't because of the fly and mosquito problem. Finally, after MUCH deliberation, bought one and put it up. I had considered the function also for my dog to come and go. He has given us the show of our lives! The mesh moves slightly with the wind, and every time he notices the movement he barks his head off at the "ghost" coming through the door. He absolutely WILL NOT go through that door when the screen is up, though he's fine to use it otherwise. Every time we hear frantic barking, we figure the ghost has come back to visit. Does it really work? Yeah, though, as one reviewer stated, the hook-and-loop patches don't always stay on the frame very well. I just bought a big roll of double-stick tape, and that's handled the problem.

The entertainment factor alone has been worth the price, Otis dancing around and scaring the entering ghosts away: Fantastic show!

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
