About Nano Banshee

The Nano Banshee is a personal alarm system that aims to help keep you safe while alone or in an unfamiliar place. The device is small enough to fit in the average set of car keys, and it is designed to be able to be taken anywhere, even on planes and other areas where more direct personal defense devices might not be permitted.

The manufacturers claim that the design for the Nano Banshee is based on the designs for a military crowd control device called an LRAD, or Long Range Acoustic Device.

These devices can be very loud, often in an attempt to get a crowd to disperse from an area that it is strategically pointed at. It would appear that the personal alarm device is less directional than this, and instead lets sound out in all directions at once.

The Nano Banshee seems particularly targeted towards women and children, with the primary uses listed as being defense from assault, animal attacks and other forms of violence. The device also includes an LED flashlight in order to attract attention and light the way in unfamiliar areas.

According to RAINN.org, an American is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds. On average, there are 321,500 victims over the age of 12 each and every year in the US alone, which is obviously tragic and debilitating for all of these individuals. These additional statistics from the website above paint a similarly horrible picture of the situation:

“Millions of women in the United States have experienced rape.

  • As of 1998, an estimated 17.7 million American women had been victims of attempted or completed rape.

Young women are especially at risk.

  • 82% of all juvenile victims are female. 90% of adult rape victims are female.
  • Females ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.
  • Women ages 18-24 who are college students are 3 times more likely than women in general to experience sexual violence. Females of the same age who are not enrolled in college are 4 times more likely.”

Obviously, it stands to reason that a device that can help protect and prevent against these terrible crimes would be incredible for those who feel at risk for such attacks each and every day, if it were truly effective at doing so.

In order to decide if the this personal alarm device is truly an effective anti-assualt device, we’ll need to first look at how the device works. From there, we’ll take a look at a few specific situations, determining how effective the device might be in each.

How Does The Nano Banshee Work?

The manufacturer claims that when activated, the device is capable of reaching a loudness of 130 decibels, which they claim is louder than a car horn, ambulance siren, and even a jet engine.

To activate the Nano Banshee, all you need to do is press the “Easy On/Off” button located on the side of the device. The device will then begin to emit the 130 decibel signal until you turn it off.

The personal alarm is powered by LR44 batteries, which aren’t included. We aren’t told how long the device will last, which is concerning because that last thing you’d want is to have the device fail on you during your moment of need, all because of a bad battery.

Overall, the Nano Banshee seems very simple to operate, which is beneficial due to the nature of the situations you might need to use it in. Next, let’s break down these various situations, and try to determine how effective the personal alarm might be in each.

How Effective Are Audible Alarms In Preventing Violence?

Obviously, the Nano Banshee can only be trusted by users if it can reliably ward off threats and keep them safe. This is a complex issue, and there are many factors that might go into determining the effectiveness of the device, from the resilience of the aggressor to the issues of battery life and more.

The manufacturer lists a multitude of different scenarios where it might make sense to use the Nano Banshee. Let’s take a look at a few of them below.

Elderly Individuals

The makers of Nano Banshee claim that the product is a natural fit for senior citizens who might not be as physically able as they once were. They state that the device would be effective for signaling for help whenever it is needed, and while this could certainly be true, there’s always the possibility that the alarm will not hold off a threat indefinitely, or even at all.

College Students

College students, and especially young women, are particularly vulnerable to sexual assault and rape, and so it stands to reason that the this personal alarm device might be incredibly useful for giving some peace of mind to both parents and young adults alike.

Again, there’s no guarantees that the Nano Banshee alone will be able to thwart a would-be aggressor, but we’d venture to say that it would at least be able to provide a bit of security, even if only psychologically speaking.

Children

Children are also at a higher risk for assault and kidnapping than many other demographics, and because of their smaller size and limited capabilities, it is even more important that they have the means to protect themselves when alone and vulnerable.

As above, there is nothing to say that the noise from this device alone will protect a child completely, but it should at least tremendously increase their options if faced with a dangerous situation.

Hikers

The makers behind the Nano Banshee claim that the device would be an excellent addition to a hikers emergency kit, both to be used as a way to ward off hostile animals, and also to signal for help if you become lost or injured.

Customer Feedback On The Nano Banshee

Although the manufacturer claims that they have sold over 100,000 Nano Banshees thus far, it seems that there aren’t a ton of reviews out there in the wild for the product just yet.

We were able to find a few reviews on various sites from users claiming that the device was “not as loud” as was advertised, but there weren’t enough of these to truly be a significant voice, at least in our opinion.

On the company’s facebook page, there are several different users that have left positive feedback on the device, citing that it works as intended and that they are happy with their purchases overall.

Now that we’ve looked at the feedback on the Nano Banshee, how much will it cost you to get one of your own?

Nano Banshee Pricing & Return Policy

It looks as though the Nano Banshee is only available via the product's main website. It currently sells for $19.99 for each device, but keep in mind that you’ll also need batteries to power it, because they are not included.

The batteries needed are LR44 “watch” batteries, which can be purchased just about anywhere batteries are sold. Optionally, you can purchase a 10-pack directly from the manufacturer for $9.99.

Finally, there’s an extended warranty that can be purchased for $20. This entitles you to a “free” replacement if your Nano Banshee is broken, lost or stolen, but in all reality, seeing as the product currently sells for the same price as the warranty, there might not be a lot of value to be had there.

That being said, the price could well go up at anytime, so locking in a replacement for $20 might not be a bad idea depending on your needs.

As for the return policy, the manufacturer states that they offer a no questions asked 30-day refund on all orders. This sounds attractive enough at first glance, but upon taking a closer look at the Terms and Conditions page, it would appear that this only applies to unopened products.

At HighYa, we feel very strongly about making these sorts of practices very transparent for our readers, so that you don’t end up getting burned down the line after making a purchase.

The Bottom Line: Is The Nano Banshee Legit?

Bringing it all together, we feel a bit conflicted on the Nano Banshee, overall. On the one hand, we haven’t been able to test the device out for ourselves, but it would appear that based on the company’s facebook page, several different users have reported enjoying the device, as well as confirming that it does indeed work as advertised.

The return policy being available only to unopened products gives us pause, as we generally see this as a red flag that a company may not be 100% confident in the product that is being offered.

That being said, it’s our opinion that the core idea of the Nano Banshee is sound, and ultimately, you can never feel secure enough when it comes to personal safety. In the end, it’ll be up to you to decide whether the price justifies the possibility of not being able to return the item should you decide that it isn’t for you.

    Sounding the alarm!

HORRIBLE ALARM. This company does NOT stand behind their product. The purpose of this alarm is to protect yourself. When it's defective, then it no longer serves its intended purpose. Look elsewhere for an alarm and a company that sells and stands behind the quality of their product. If you want protection, DON'T buy this alarm!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The alarm does not work, the battery is good, and the light comes on. They are expensive to last only a couple of months. They should send me two new ones! I walk my dog every night and used it to protect myself and my little dog. It also protected him against a bigger dog who wanted to fight. If I don't get any response, I will post this on Facebook where I first saw the advertisement and ordered.

I am disgusted by the lack of contact by this company. I had ordered the five items plus the three free items option for $78.95.

The order #1889-2623 only showed being billed for one item. I have been trying to contact this company since 6/23/14 by email. I had a problem with the application. I expect to have the issue resolved ASAP.

No response from seller or return address

I have tried to get in touch with the company to no avail. They will not respond to my emails, and will not forward my return address. I was over charged, and I have filed a complaint with my card company.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
