About New Edge 3
New Edge 3 claims to be a quick and easy way to sharpen your windshield wiper blades, so that you can eliminate streaks and see better when you’re on the road.
New Edge 3 claims to accomplish this by using micro-abrasive silicone grit to re-hone the edge of your blades, which will provide streak-free use for any car, van, or truck, whether on the front or rear. On top of this, New Edge 3 is claimed to be reusable over 100 times, which can help you save money.
In order to use New Edge 3, the manufacturer claims the process works over 2 steps:
- Place New Edge 3 in the path of the blade where smears occur.
- Turn your windshield wipers on for three passes, and then peel off.
Doesn’t it seem like you have to replace your windshield wipers way too often? I mean, as soon as you put a new pair on, they quickly lose their effectiveness!
But is New Edge 3 a legitimate solution to this problem, or is the manufacturer simply trying to cash in? Consider the following:
More about Micro-abrasive Silicon Grit
As it turns out, this seems to be an easier question to ask than to answer. Why?
Because, when searching for the exact term “micro-abrasive silicone grit,” the only results returned were directly related to New Edge 3. We did uncover some sites that referenced silicon carbide micro grit for use in industrial sawing applications, although these don’t appear to match those found in New Edge 3.
Considering all of this, we believe this is a new term coined by the product’s manufacturer, which references a material similar to the consistency of very fine grit sandpaper.
Can Windshield Wipers Be “Honed?”
While windshield wipers can be made from any number of materials depending on the manufacturer, most are crafted from carbonized or silicon-based rubber. And just like any other material encountering constant friction, as you use your blades, they can become cracked and lose very tiny pieces.
Although this might not become immediately apparent, as these cracks and missing pieces become larger, they can eventually allow water through and lead to streaking on your windshield.
With this said, essentially what you’ll be doing with New Edge 3 is smoothing out these areas of missing rubber by “shaving” them down.
However, although this might work as a temporary fix, it’s likely that you’ll begin experiencing streaks again, and faster than when your wipers were new. In other words, although New Edge 3 might buy you additional time, it won’t match the performance or durability as a new, fresh pair of wiper blades.
How Easy Is New Edge 3 to Use?
Although New Edge 3’s manufacturer makes it seem like you can re-hone your wiper blades in a matter of seconds, the reality is that it might take longer.
This is because, based on the images on New Edge 3’s website, it doesn’t cover the entire windshield. This means that once you’ve honed a section of your wipers, you’ll have to move the adhesive pad up or down to hone the rest blade. Otherwise, you’ll end up with one section that removes water well, and the remainder won’t.
Note: This may not be the case for smaller, sub-compact cars, although vehicles with larger windshields, such as trucks and SUVs, might be the most difficult to work with.
Other Methods of Preserving Your Wiper Blades
Finally, keep in mind that there are dozens of DIY methods you can use to temporarily restore your wiper blades using items you likely already have around the house, including flipping your blades around, cleaning them with dish soap and white vinegar, spraying them with silicon, etc.
For more tips, we’d recommend entering the phrase “DIY windshield wiper repair” or “restore wiper blades” into your favorite search engine.
Who Manufactures New Edge 3?
Here at HighYa, we’ve garnered well over 300 reader reviews for these products, and they’ve earned an average rating of 1.5 stars. Although some customers appear to have been satisfied with their purchases, the overwhelming majority complained of poor quality, failure to work as advertised, and difficulty obtaining refunds.
This might not ultimately be your experience with New Edge 3, but it’s certainly worth mentioning.
New Edge 3 Pricing & Refund Policy
Two New Edge 3s are priced at $9.99 plus $9.98 S&H. Yes, the S&H charges cost almost as much as the product itself!
New Edge 3 comes with a 30-day refund policy, less S&H charges (here’s where they get you). This means if you decide to return your New Edge 3s, you could spend 50% more in S&H charges than you’ll receive as a refund.
With this said, in order to request a refund, you’ll need to contact customer service at 800-372-6040.
Can New Edge 3 Restore Your Windshield Wiper Blades?
Chopping to the point: At its most basic, assuming New Edge 3’s micro-abrasive silicon grit actually re-hones as well as they claim, it might add a few weeks of life to your windshield wipers. However, they will not help you avoid having to purchase new blades sometime in the relatively near future.
Considering this, as well as the fact that brand new replacement blades can be purchased for about the same price as New Edge 3 (factoring in the high, non-refundable S&H charges)—depending on the vehicle and brand, of course—we’d recommend attempting some DIY fixes before placing your New Edge 3 order.
