About NootroCell Retain
Using what they call an “advanced, one-of-a-kind” formula, NootroCell Retain is a nutritional supplement that claims to increase short and long-term memory, while improving energy levels. Not only this, but Retain also promises to deliver improved brain reaction time, mood, focus, and overall health and wellbeing.
To do this, we’re told that NootroCell engineered Retain with all the ingredients and vitamins your brain needs—in the exact dosage it needs—to “improve all areas of cognitive growth.” In fact, the company claims that men and women anywhere between their early 20s and mid-60s noticed “drastic increases” in short and long-term memory from using Retain!
According to NootroCell, all you have to do is take 2 softgels of Retain every morning, and you’ll soon begin feeling more alert and focused throughout the day.
You, me, everyone—we’re all looking to meaningfully improve our health and boost our brainpower. And we need all the help we can get, right? Given this, it’s easy to believe that popping a couple capsules can put you on the right path, but is there anything to NootroCell Retain? That’s the big question that we’ll help you answer here.
What Makes You Think?
Now, this is a vastly complex topic; one which is far outside the scope of this review, and a lot of which remains unknown to modern science. For our purposes today, we’ll start the “thinking” conversation by talking about brain cells, otherwise known as neurons.
Unlike all of our other cells, neurons are able to chemically and/or electrically transmit information throughout our body, including our senses (sensory neurons), muscles (motor neurons), and between each other (interneurons). As such, they act as the basic building block of our entire nervous system.
From a chemical perspective, neurons transmit information through neurotransmitters (hence the name). One of the most abundant of these is known as acetylcholine, which is associated with memory, muscle contractions, and learning.
When we’re young and our brain cells are new, everything fires like it should. As we age, acetylcholine product slows down, which neurons that die off are never replaced, leading to cognition problems like forgetfulness, difficulty, and concentrating.
When this occurs as a normal part of aging, it’s known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which usually doesn’t significantly impact an individual’s life. On the other hand, severe forms of dementia like Alzheimer’s can destroy lives.
Regardless, is there anything found in NootroCell Retain that can help improve your cognition and memory, or protect you from aging-related neurodegeneration?
What Ingredients Are Found In NootroCell Retain? Are They Effective?
According to their website, each 2-capsule dose of NootroCell Retain only contains 1,000mg of fish oil. Inside this oil, you’ll find 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA. Will these provide any of the benefits we already discussed?
Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for a healthy human body, but can only be obtained through food sources like fish (especially salmon, tuna, and halibut), krill, algae, and some nuts and other plants.
Now, there are many different kinds of omega 3 fatty acids, although two specifically—eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—have been shown to be effective for treating a wide range of conditions, including high cholesterol and blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, and much more.
While it might make sense that relieving some of the symptoms associated with these conditions could boost your energy and make your mind sharper, there seems to be little evidence that omega 3 fatty acids can directly increase energy or cognition, as claimed by Retain’s manufacturer.
Pro tip: Have you heard that omega 3s can provide anti-aging benefits? Based on our research, this doesn’t seem to be the case.
Will NootroCell Retain Cause Any Side Effects?
In general, omega 3 fatty acids cause no side effects. For those that do experience side effects, they’re often mild and relate to digestive upset. In rare instances, omega 3s can also lead to nosebleed, muscle pain, skin rashes, and “fishy” belches.
NootroCell’s Terms adds:
“People with the following conditions should contact a Doctor before consuming this product. High blood pressure, heart, liver, kidney or thyroid disease, diabetes, anemia, depression, anxiety, other psychiatric conditions, a family history of these or other medical conditions, or if taking any prescription, OTC and/or other herbal medications.”
How Much Does NootroCell Retain Cost?
NootroCell offers Retain in the following quantities:
- 1 Bottle (60 softgels): $49.85
- 3 Bottles: $113.82
- 5 Bottles: $149.95
Regardless of the amount you purchase, Retain comes with a 30-day refund policy, although these are handled on a “case-by-case basis” and are only eligible for unused and unopened merchandise. In order to request one, customer service can be reached at (888) 708-9627 or email@example.com.
Does NootroCell Retain Have Any Competition?
Based on their ingredients list, NootroCell appears to be nothing more than an omega 3 supplement, which is something you can pick up at any retailer with a vitamins section, or at about a million other places online. From a price perspective, you’ll find that some fish oil softgels from national manufacturers can be purchased for as little as $10, which is a heck of a lot cheaper than Retain.
Add to this that we know next to nothing about Retain’s manufacturer, other than that the company’s name is Pacific Naturals, based out of Burbank, CA. It appears they’re tied to a string of other businesses and individuals, and that they were sent an FDA warning letter in 2011 related to advertising practices for their other products, Herpeset and Wartrol. Neither of these products seem to come with favorable online customer reviews.
Is There Anything New About NootroCell Retain?
Over the past couple years, the HighYa team has reviewed a number of cognitive boosting supplements, and we even wrote an in-depth brain booster buyer’s guide based on our extensive research. Browsing through just a few of these supplements, you’ll find that they make many of the same claims as Retain, but feature a completely different formulation of ingredients.
In fact, based on the clinical evidence for Retain’s only ingredient (1,000 mg fish oil), we don’t think it even belongs in the same classification as these other supplements.
Taking this into consideration, if you’re looking for a direct boost to your cognition, we don’t think you’ll find it with NootroCell retain. Granted, you could experience many other positive health benefits, but you could likely achieve the same results from a much less expensive omega 3 supplement purchased locally.
What about NootroCell’s claim that men and women noticed “drastic increases” in short and long-term memory after using Retain? The company provides zero evidence to back this up, so it’s difficult to put any stock in its truthfulness.
Did you end up trying NootroCell Retain? Did it boost your brainpower or just shrink your bank account? We want to know, so be sure to leave your review below!
