About Perfect Flora by Probiotic America
Perfect Flora by Probiotic America is a nutritional supplement that has a “unique” ability to get rid of bad bacteria in your GI tract and restore balance to your gut. As a result, the company claims you can expect to experience reduced cravings for unhealthy food, improved regularity, and decreased sluggishness after meals—all within a few weeks.
To do this, Probiotic America included four bacteriophages in Perfect Flora (don’t worry, we’ll talk about this again soon):
- LH01 – Myoviridae
- LL5 – Siphoviridae
- T4D – Myoviridae
- LL12 – Myoviridae
All Probiotic America’s supplements, including Perfect Flora, are tested by a third-party lab to ensure the highest quality and safety, and cause no reported side effects. In fact, Probiotic America is so confident in the efficacy of Perfect Flora that they claim it’s a “breakthrough in digestive health enhancement” that can provide “transformative digestive benefits.”
Just what is Perfect Flora, though? How is it different than a traditional probiotic supplement? Will it work any better? Is it worth the price? You’ve got a lot of questions about Perfect Flora, and we’re here to help you find some answers.
To begin, let’s look at exactly what bacteriophages are and how they might help improve your health.
Perfect Flora vs. Probiotic Supplements
The Basics About Probiotics
The HighYa team has written extensively about probiotic supplements over the years, so we definitely consider ourselves fairly well-versed on the subject. We’ll only go into high-level detail here, so if you need help getting up to speed, be sure to start by reading Probiotics 101 and Understanding Probiotics.
In a nutshell, your digestive tract (commonly called your gut) is home to trillions of different bacteria cells that serve a variety of different functions; some are “good” (i.e. they might help improve digestion or reduce gassiness), while others are “bad” and might cause unwanted side effects if they become too abundant, like decreased energy or reduced immune system response.
Under optimal circumstances, there’s a balance between these good and bad bacteria, which helps your gut operate optimally. However, after eating a poor diet, experiencing prolonged stress, or undergoing a round of antibiotics (as just a few examples), this balance can be thrown off.
Enter probiotics. These are specific strains of bacteria that are purposefully reintroduced into your body in order to balance your gut. Probiotics can come in capsules, drinks, yogurts, cheeses, and more, and there’s a mountain of evidence supporting their efficacy.
Bacteriophages Are Not Probiotics
Based on what we just learned, Perfect Flora by Probiotic America seems to be eerily similar. But any similarities lie only in the supplement’s benefits; not in how it works.
Whereas probiotic supplements add beneficial bacteria strains to your gut, bacteriophages are actually viruses that infect bacterium, replicate rapidly, and destroy the bacterium in the process. In fact, bacteriophages are the most numerous viruses on earth.
Similar to probiotic strains, specific bacteriophage strains can be ingested to provide specific benefits to humans, since these strains target many of the “bad” bacteria that can lead to less-than-optimal health. When used in this way, it’s known as phage therapy.
Are There Other Bacteriophage Supplements Like Perfect Flora?
Given the fact that phage therapy has been used in medicine since the 1920s, along with the recent public interest in maintaining gut health, you might imagine that there are dozens of bacteriophage supplements just like Perfect Flora—and you’d be right.
To see for yourself, type the phrase “bacteriophage supplement” into your favorite search engine, and you’ll find dozens of options that come up. Other than price (which we’ll talk more about in the next section), is there any meaningful different between these other supplements and Perfect Flora?
While most of these companies don’t list the specific bacteriophages found in their supplements, we’re told Perfect Flora contains:
- LH01 – Myoviridae
- LL5 – Siphoviridae
- T4D – Myoviridae
- LL12 – Myoviridae
Myoviridae and siphoviridae are families of viruses, and the numbers next to them are the specific strains. While these viral families are commonly used in phage therapy, we didn’t uncover any research showing specific benefits related to the strains found in Perfect Flora. As such, does this mean Perfect Flora’s price is justified?
How Much Does Perfect Flora Cost?
Perfect Flora is available in the following quantities:
- 1 Bottle: $48.95
- 3 Bottles: $124.82
- 6 Bottles: $232.02
Comparatively, Perfect Flora seems to be on the lower end of the spectrum for bacteriophage supplements.
All Probiotic America supplements, including Perfect Flora, come with a 90-day money back guarantee, less S&H charges. Simply call customer service at (866) 803-9895, send back the bottle (even if it’s empty), and you’ll receive a full refund.
Just who is Probiotic America, anyway?
Online Customer Reviews for Perfect Flora by Probiotic America
The HighYa team specializes in reviewing many products soon after they’re released, so there wasn’t any online customer feedback for Perfect Flora at the time of our research.
However, more than 730 HighYa readers had provided feedback for Probiotic America’s other supplements, Perfect Biotics (a true probiotic) and Perfect Digest, an enzyme-based supplement that’s claimed to accomplish many of the same things. And with an average rating of 4.6 stars, it seems like most customers are overwhelmingly happy with their experiences.
What’d they say? Common compliments referenced increased energy, boosted weight loss, improved digestion, decreased IBS-related symptoms, decreased bloating, and more. Granted, these are common for most probiotic supplements, although Perfect Biotics seems to score especially high with customers.
Does this mean you’ll experience the same with Perfect Flora? Without any online customer reviews, there’s simply no way to know for sure without giving it a try. But before you do, there are a couple things you might want to consider.
Should You Choose Perfect Flora Or a Probiotic Supplement?
As we mentioned above, although the goal of bacteriophage and probiotic supplements is the same (i.e. improve gut health), they go about it in very different ways, which can lead to some fairly distinct pros and cons.
Primarily, unlike probiotics, which simply play a numbers game to crowd out “bad” bacteria with more “good” bacteria, bacteriophages actively seek out and destroy only specific types of bacteria. On top of this, bacteriophages continue to self-replicate until the last “bad” bacterium has been eliminated.
It’s also widely thought that there are zero side effects associated with bacteriophage supplementation. Although probiotic side effects are generally mild and last only a few days, some users might experience digestive issues like cramping, gassiness, and bloating. In fact, bacteriophage therapy is often considered a viable alternative for patients who are allergic to antibiotics.
Here’s the reality, though: According to Probiotic America, bacteriophage supplements like Perfect Flora can be taken in conjunction with your existing probiotic, meaning that you don’t necessarily have to make a choice between one or the other.
Taken together, there seem to be a lot of reasons you might want to consider bacteriophage supplementation—after speaking with your doctor, of course. But does this mean that Perfect Flora is your best option?
Should You Buy Perfect Flora by Probiotic America?
Although we couldn’t find any evidence supporting the company’s claim that a bacteriophage supplement can boost some beneficial bacteria strains by as much as 7,000%, there’s little doubt that one could provide your gut with some big benefits. Does this necessarily mean you should buy Perfect Flora?
Probiotic America’s other supplements seem to come with rave reviews from HighYa readers, and the company appears to stand behind their products with a 90-day refund policy. On top of this, Perfect Flora is priced very competitively with other bacteriophage supplements.
Given this, in the end, you might not have much more to lose than a few dollars in S&H for giving Perfect Flora a try. And you could gain a whole lot in the process.
