About Pocket Cam
Update: Like most things, products have a natural life cycle, and when they outlive their profitability they become "dead," or discontinued. This is a frequent occurrence with "As Seen on TV" products, and it's often the case that the only notice we're given of their passing is an inactive website. With this in mind, as of now it appears that Pocket Cam is no longer being offered by the manufacturer.
Just 2 inches tall, the makers of Pocket Cam claim this mini video camera can be used in almost any situation. They say you can capture events not possible with expensive smartphones or larger cameras.
Pocket Cam is brought to you by Telebrands, inventors of the “As Seen on TV” logo and marketers of hundreds of gadgets. They are accredited by the BBB and have an A- rating; still, there are plenty of complaints about their products, billing, and advertising.
How Pocket Cam Works
They say Pocket Cam is easy to use and can provide you with hours of high quality video footage. It can be held in your hand, or used with the “Pro Shot Action Kit” which includes swivel mount, dash mount, shirt clip, and lanyard. The photos on the website suggest it could be placed on a skateboard, helmet, car dashboard, and even at the end of a stick and stuck in a crocodile’s mouth! Because it’s small and made of plastic, they say it’s more durable and versatile than a smartphone or high-end camera.
They claim the video itself is 720x480 pixels, 30 fps and comes with a built-in microphone and lithium battery so it can be used without plugging it in. They say there is a voice control function, allowing you turn it off or on by just speaking to it. It includes a USB port for uploading video you have already shot, or can be connected to a laptop or computer for “real time” transmitting. It says it can hold up to 16 GB memory, although it says a Micro SD card is not included; it is unclear how many hours of footage the Pocket Cam will give you out of the box.
Pocket Cam comes with:
- 2” Pocket Cam
- USB connector
- Voice control function
- 720x480 video resolution
- 30 FPS recording
- Built-in lithium battery
- Pro Shot Action KIt (swivel mount, dash mount, shirt clip, lanyard) - separate S & H
Pocket Cam Pricing, Shipping, and Returns
Pocket Cam can be yours for $19.99 plus $7.99 S & H for a total of $27.98. If you want the Pro Shot Action Kit, add another $9.99 for a total of $37.97. They say it can take from 3-6 weeks to receive your Pocket Cam. All Telebrands products come with a 30-day money back guarantee. You must return the product in the original packaging, along with a “detailed explanation” of why you don’t like it, and they will refund your money, minus S & H (and what it cost you to send it back.)
Bottom Line: Is Pocket Cam a Scam?
A 2-inch camera used to be something you might find in a spy shop (and be incredibly expensive.) Nowadays of course, these tiny plastic cameras are cheap and available everywhere. The Pro Shot Action Kit is a nice idea, but you can also get swivel and dash attachments that will fit your smartphone and make it almost as versatile. It says it shoots video at 720x480 but doesn’t include the magic initials “HD” so the quality is suspect. You also have to purchase a separate Micro SD card to really get long shooting times. While it’s true that you probably wouldn’t want to use a nicer camera or smartphone in certain situations that Pocket Cam illustrates, it’s still too expensive for what you get.
