About Pocket Lamp
Pocket Lamp claims to be a foldable, portable popup lamp that fits in your pocket and can provide you with all the light you need, anywhere you go. Simply pull out your Pocket Lamp, open it up, and the ratcheting hinges and non-slip rubber feet will firmly hold it in any position you choose.
The Pocket Lamp claims to feature 24 super-bright LED lights that are cool to the touch and will last a lifetime without burning out. In order to customize the level of light you need, Pocket Lamp’s smooth touch control is claimed to provide you with three different brightness levels. And if you’re running low on batteries, Pocket Lamp can be powered via a USB cable directly from your computer.
You’ve probably tried other portable lighting options in the past, but does Pocket Lamp necessarily provide anything new, and will it provide good value for your money? Consider the following:
Is Pocket Lamp Really as Portable as It Claims?
While there aren’t any specifications provided on the Pocket Lamp website, it’s important to note that the light appears to be about 2” thick and about 5” long, so unless you have big pockets, you’ll probably have to carry it around in a bag when you’re on the go.
As such, it might not be quite as portable as it’s made to seem in the commercial.
How Long will Pocket Lamp’s LEDs Last?
Next, according to Bulbs.com, “LEDs are notable for being extremely long-lasting products. Many LEDs have a rated life of up to 50,000 hours. This is approximately 50 times longer than a typical incandescent, 20-25 times longer than a typical halogen, and 8-10 times longer than a typical CFL. Used 12 hours a day, a 50,000 bulb will last more than 11 years. Used 8 hours a day, it will last 17 years!”
With this said, while Pocket Lamp’s LED bulbs will likely last a very long time, they will not last a “lifetime.” In fact, it might be the case that your Pocket Lamp stops working long before the bulbs ever burn out (more about this in a moment).
Are There Other Portable Lamps Available?
Folding, portable lamps aren’t a new invention, so if you’re in the market for one, be sure to check out your available options online. Granted, not all of your options will be as inexpensive as the Pocket Lamp, but it’s definitely worth keeping in mind.
In fact, Pocket Lamp appears to be nearly identical to the iBrite Folding Desk Lamp, so it may just be a rebranded version of the same product.
Is Pocket Lamp Illuminating Customers’ Lives?
Pocket Lamp was a very new product at the time of our research (URL registered February 2015) and didn’t have any online customer reviews available.
However, Pocket Lamp is manufactured by Telebrands based out of Fairfield, NJ, who makes many popular ASOTV products, including Ankle Genie, Pocket Hose Ultra, and Grassology. Among these, HighYa readers give them an average rating of 1.5 stars, with common complaints citing poor quality products, failure to work as advertised, and poor customer service (difficulty processing refunds, numerous upsells during calls, etc.).
While this might not be what you’ll experience with Pocket Lamp, certainly a factor worth considering.
From a company perspective, Telebrands holds an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on 1,412 closed complaints (as of 3/2/15), many of which reference the same concerns noted above.
Pocket Lamp Pricing & Refund Policy
Pocket Lamp is priced at $12.99 plus $7.99 S&H, and you’ll be able to purchase a second lamp for an additional $6.99 S&H at checkout.
Regardless of the number of Pocket Lamps you purchase, each one will come with a free USB cable.
Pocket Lamp comes with a 30-day refund policy, less S&H charges. This means that if you choose the BOGO offer, you’ll lose nearly $15 in S&H fees, plus whatever it will cost you to send them back to the manufacturer. Ultimately, you might end up spending close to twice as much in S&H charges as you’ll receive as a refund.
In order to request a refund for your Pocket Lamp, you’ll need to contact customer service at 855-668-1655.
Can You Use Pocket Lamp to Light Up Your Life?
While we could see numerous instances where Pocket Lamp might come in handy, such as when reading in bed or traveling on a business trip, you might want to research all your options before handing over your hard-earned money, especially considering the product’s high, non-refundable S&H charges. One buyer's tip we can provide is to wait when it becomes available at your local Walgreens or Target and purchase it from there. That way you can avoid a hassle free return should you be dissatisfied with the pocket lamp.
