How Does Primal Sleep System Improve Your Sleep?

In some parts of their website, the company claims that Primal Sleep System is a 6-part system, while in others it consists of 4 parts. Regardless, none of these steps are outlined in any detail, although we are told it involves:

  • “Audio technology that automatically sends you into the most healing sleep of your life—no effort needed,” and
  • Training your brain to release delta waves when you’re ready to go to sleep.

This “audio technology” consists of three different audio sessions: 1) Primal Sleep (Delta), Nature Mind (Theta), and Deep Dreams (Delta). Simply listen to these recordings up to two hours before you want to go to sleep, and you’ll experience deep, rejuvenating rest.

Sure, all of this is fairly vague, but there are a couple concepts we can latch on to, which is what we’ll cover next.

Binaural Beats, Delta Waves, & Sleep

What Are Binaural Beats?

Imagine that you put on a pair of headphones; the kind that’s padded and covers your whole ear. In front of you, a person stands behind a keyboard. First, they play one note, which you only hear in your right ear. Then, they play a different note in your left ear.

Then, something weird happens. You can clearly hear each of the notes, but for some reason it sounds like a third note’s being played. It’s all in your head!

This is an overly simple example of an auditory illusion known as a binaural beat. In reality though, you couldn’t pick just any note. Instead, they’d have to be “two different pure-tone sine waves, both with frequencies lower than 1500 Hz, with less than a 40 Hz difference between them.”

Now that we know what binaural beats are, how can they help you sleep better?

Delta Waves Crashing Into Sleep

Like binaural beats, brain waves are measured in Hz using a test called an electroencephalogram (EEG). And there are different brain waves are associated with different stages of sleep. These include:

  • Theta (4 to 8 Hz): Your brain emits theta waves during the first two stages of sleep, which are very light. Although you’re relaxed in these stages, if you were to suddenly be awakened, you’d probably think you didn’t sleep at all.

Let’s use our imagination here again. Picture four large, wooden grandfather clocks standing in two different rows, facing one another. They’re each about 6” apart.

Now, imagine that you randomly push their pendulums, so that each one was swinging differently than the others. Tick tock, tick tock. You walk out of room and go about your routine.

Did you know that if you returned the next day, you’d find all of them swinging in unison? This is because “small amounts of energy are transferred between the two systems when they are out of phase in such a way as to produce negative feedback.” In turn, this negative feedback would (in our example) cause some of the pendulums to slow down, while others would speed up until they were synchronized.

This is a phenomenon known as entrainment.

How Does Entrainment Apply To Primal Sleep System?

In a nutshell, the binaural beats found in Primal Sleep System’s audio files can ‘share’ their energy with your brain until they’re both entrained, or synchronized. In short, they can help your brain produce specific waves depending on what you’re looking to achieve; theta and beta for relaxation and sleep, alpha for peacefulness, and beta for day-to-day wakefulness.

Here’s the catch: Just because you’re artificially making your brain produce certain waves with binaural beats, this doesn’t mean it’ll necessarily translate into better sleep. Why? Because there’s little clinical evidence to support these claims.

Bottom Line: Should You Give Primal Sleep System a Try?

If you struggle with insomnia, then you’ll probably try just about anything to get a good night’s sleep. And there are a lot of people out there claiming that binaural beats helped improve their sleep, so it’s entirely possible they might work for you as well.

However, keep in mind that there isn’t any clinical evidence directly linking certain binaural frequencies with improved sleep, so keep your expectations realistic. Because it’s certainly not guaranteed to get rid of your insomnia, despite what Primal Sleep System’s manufacturer might want you to believe.
