About Retrofit

Based out of Chicago, IL, Retrofit Diet is a month-to-month weight loss program that claims to provide a 90% success rate for helping their clients lose weight. When compared to other weight loss programs, Retrofit is less about helping clients quickly lose a lot of weight, and more about creating informed dieters who make healthy decisions for the remainder of their lives.

Retrofit Diet has been featured on Forbes, CBS News, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, and more, though they are not listed with the Better Business Bureau. Overall customer satisfaction appears to be high, though the most common complaints include high pricing, inability to help those who lack self-control, and exercises that can be strenuous for someone not used to regular physical activity.

How the Retrofit Diet Works

According to the Retrofit website, you’ve probably looked for almost instantaneous weight loss through a countless variety of magic pills and fad diets, only to be continuously disappointed. However, this is because true weight loss—the kind where you keep it off—requires that you change your everyday decisions. Because of this simple truth, Retrofit helps you “make simple changes to your daily choices.”

On average, each Retrofit client loses ½-1 pound per week, and their expert staff of “registered dietitians, exercise physiologists and behavior coaches” will build a unique program for your specific needs. Accordingly, 90% of Retrofit’s clients lose weight because of their unique focus on:

  1. Creating human accountability by pairing you with an expert that matches your specific goals and personality.
  2. Offering one-on-one lessons that focus on your unique challenges, and how to overcome them. This is conducted via videoconferences, which allows you to be open and honest with your expert, and to not only discuss your accomplishments, but to help overcome your specific challenges as well.
  3. Encompassing all three components of successful weight loss: nutrition, fitness, and mindset. Each customized plan will address the specific needs for an individual’s specific lifestyle and abilities, and if s/he isn't able to do certain types of activities, the coach or exercise physiologist will come up with alternative exercises to better suit their needs.
  4. Providing you with wireless devices that help keep track of your data, which is transmitted to experts who can then figure out what’s working for you, and what isn’t.
  5. Providing you with real, actionable information—such as good sleeping patterns and nutrition facts—that can make you a more informed dieter.
  6. Convenience—Retrofit experts are available when your schedule allows.
  7. The unique needs of men. In fact, their “private, data-driven” program is ideal for men, who constitute a full 50% of their clientele.
  8. Creating a way of life, not a diet plan. As a result, you won’t deprive yourself of your favorite foods.

What’s more, the company claims that losing 10% of your body weight over three months, and 15% over six months, is sustainable. This means that not only will Retrofit help you lose the weight to begin with, they’ll help you keep it off for the long run. Which is something 95% of diets fail to do.

Retrofit Diet Plans, Pricing, & Refund Policy

Retrofit Diet offers three different weight loss programs, at three different price levels:

  • Advisor: $148 per month – Includes wireless results tracking, 24/7 online messaging support, 1-on-1 expert weight loss coaching, one monthly 1-on-1 video session with an expert, and unlimited online support.
  • Expert 10: $248 per month – Includes wireless results tracking, 24/7 online messaging support, a personal team of 3 weight loss experts, two monthly 1-on-1 video sessions with an expert, unlimited online support, and a 10% weight loss “no fail” promise.
  • Expert 15: $298 per month – Includes wireless results tracking, 24/7 online messaging support, a personal team of 3 weight loss experts, three monthly 1-on-1 video sessions with an expert, unlimited online support, and a 15% weight loss “no fail” promise.

Whichever plan you choose, you can always save 10% by pre-paying for 12 months in advance.

If you’d like to try out the Retrofit program but are worried about what you’ll receive for the money, the company provides each customer with a 45-day risk free trial. If you’re unhappy with the program for any reason within this time, simply return your devices to the company, and you’ll receive a full refund. After the 45 days has passed, and if you’re paying on a month-to-month basis, you can cancel any time without further obligation.

Cons:

  • All meetings are virtual, which means that if you’ve struggled with self-control and dieting before, Retrofit probably won’t help address this. Also, some reviews note that the exercises can be strenuous for someone not already used to minimal activity levels. However, it should be noted that each plan is customized to meet the specific needs of an individual’s lifestyle and abilities. Therefore, if s/he isn't able to do certain types of activities, the coach or exercise physiologist will come up with alternative exercises to better suit their needs.
  • Cost can be very high when compared to other dieting plans, but less expensive than hiring a dietician and personal trainer individually.

    What a Joke

    Run away, they will send out automated messages to keep your mode up. No diet or exercise. Only tap on the shoulders. I think it's a big waste of money.

    Definitely not a "diet"

    The thing I liked the most about Retrofit was the fact that they really focused on lifestyle modification and not just a quick fix. If you are looking to lose 10lbs quickly for your sister's wedding, only to gain it back after the ceremony, Retrofit is not for you. Retrofit focuses on long-term weight loss.

    For me personally, I actually had 80% of the lifestyle thing down before joining Retrofit. What worked best for me was the constant accountability from the team. When my step counts were down, or my weight creeped up, I heard from them. But I also heard from them when my weight went down, or I made a good food choice. It helped me to know I would get cheers for success from someone other than myself. Often weight loss is a lonely battle, and I really enjoyed the support from the Retrofit team.

    The only bad thing about Retrofit is the cost. Luckily, my employer subsidized the cost immensely, but I'm not sure I would have joined if they didn't. I think those who are obese or who have chronic conditions because of their weight will benefit the most from Retrofit. For them, the benefit will greatly outweigh the cost. But for the person just looking to lose those last 10lbs, it may be too expensive.

    Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

    Long Term Weight Loss & Satisfaction

    The retrofit program helped me improve my health by doing many things right. Eating right, but not on a denial based diet. Exercise right, but not working out all the time. Thinking right, making the right decisions and wanting to be healthy. After a year I have lost over 60 pounds and am very active. The advisers/team/friends are there for you at every turn - posting inspirations, and questioning your motives. As a 50 year old with small kids, and a busy work life - I did not even consider how successful this program could be. Thanks you Retrofit for helping me live wonderfully.

    My treadmill is not just used for hanging clothes anymore

    The folks at Retrofit have helped me go from a couch potato to a person who is comfortable exercising again. The exercise plan was tailored to my personal strengths and weaknesses.

    I am over 50 years old and everyone knows the older you get the harder it is to get weight off. I not only reached my 10% weight loss goal, I am at 17.6% as of today and still losing.

    The dietitians and behavior coaches helped me not only make better eating choices but helped me understand why I turn to food in moments of stress and gave me great ideas on how to overcome lives obstacles.

    This is not a quick fix diet and the things I have been taught at Retrofit will help me keep the weight off.

    Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

    Absolutely Useless and a Waste of Money

    I had a very negative experience with Retrofitme with the Expert program: - I received a FitBit, lost it, got the replacement through Retrofitme and was charged.

    The next time I lost the FitBit, I was told to go through FitBit for a replacement. It was replaced for free. When asked why I was charged through Retrofitme but not FitBit, I was told I could call them, but they never answered through email.

    When I asked if I needed to notify them 30 days before the end of my year long plan, I was told that they could cancel my membership immediately. I was under the impression that there was no option to cancel early. If there was, I would have canceled much, much sooner. No explanation was given, so my membership was canceled after 11 months rather than 12 months.

    When I did cancel, I was asked to return the Withings scale and the FitBit. When I asked why in the world I would return a used scale and a used FitBit, and if the scale I had received and the FitBit I had received was used, they answered that my units were new, and I didn't have to return the scale and the FitBit.

    At the end of my plan I asked why I had never met with the exercise specialist. My expert team of three had only ever consisted of two. No explanation given.

    Initially I was told that I didn't have to count calories, just make better choices. But after I didn't lose any weight, they asked me to start counting calories.

    I didn't lose any weight and I'm out $2,000.

    Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    I can lose weight by being more active and eating less! Retrofit introduced me to tools and knowledge to change my eating and activity habits.

    I am sure that over the years I have done every diet program there is - the liquid shakes, pre-packaged meals, meetings, diet medications. I lost weight with almost all of the programs, but it didn’t take long for the weight to come back. I would always ask my doctor about weight loss, and he would tell me “be more active and eat less calories.” I truly believed “be more active and eat less calories” would never work for me and resigned myself to being overweight.

    Early last year, after weight loss program presentations were completed at work, I joined the Retrofit program. Retrofit is a lifestyle change program.

    The first thing Retrofit did was give me some tools. In keeping with today’s world of technology, they were two electronic tools - a FitBit activity tracker and a wireless scale. Right up my alley! My weight and activity levels would be kept track of without my having to write it down all the time and I could view charts and easily see my progress in those charts. I love these two tools and will continue to use them.

    I was assigned a team of coaches to help me with my journey. This included a team coordinator, a nutritionist, a behaviorist, and an exercise physiologist. They were what was best of all.

    What I learned from my coaches made sense and has stuck with me. The biggest change for me is - I have learned how to eat! I was taught general guidelines and visual tools that really helped me with menu planning and portions. I also learned to make conscious decisions to be more active. I learned to pay attention to what my body told me. I learned to have conversations with myself to help keep me on track with my eating and being more active.

    I lost 39 pounds within my first six months! The result? I feel better. My clothes fit better. I like shopping for new clothes. I don’t go out of my way to avoid social situations. I can cross my legs. And a real biggie for me personally - I am far more active with the required chores for our hobby farm which includes horses, dogs, chickens, ducks, a goat, and cats. I love animals and being outdoors, but with my weight where it was, taking care of them seemed such a struggle and I would always be tired and I couldn’t enjoy the animals. The chores don’t make me tired anymore, but actually help energize me, and I am enjoying all my pets again, which is very important to me.

    I would like to have lost twenty-five to forty more pounds in the second six months. But I had a life altering event occur which made it difficult for me to focus on weight loss. Chemotherapy for my mom, who had been battling lung cancer for three years, stopped being effective and she entered hospice with end-stage cancer. Mom passed away a month and a half later. But with support of my team and continuing to use the tools that I learned, my weight held steady in those second six months!

    My lifestyle change journey is far from over. I am going to work on getting rid of those twenty-five to forty more pounds and know that I can do it. I will (and do!) have slip-ups, but I have knowledge and the tools to keep me moving forward.

    Life changing!

    The staff at Retrofit have helped me change my life. I have learned so much about myself and have made changes that will last a lifetime. I am a much healthier person now than when I began the program.

    This is not a diet or a quick fix. It is a journey to becoming more healthy. It is a real life approach that teaches you how to eat and not deprive yourself.
