About SpiderTech

SpiderTech is a company that manufactures a line of elastic therapeutic tape that claims to be professionally engineered to mimic the thickness and elasticity of human skin, which can help protect tissue during recovery, and can safely improve your range of motion during exercise and everyday movements. Each SpiderTech tape is claimed to come in a convenient, standardized, and easy to use pre-cut and ready to apply format, which the company claims can provide powerful, 100% drug-free relief for all your minor aches and pains.

Whether you’re an athlete charging up the side of a mountain, or a passionate backyard gardener, there’s bound to be a time when you experience an injury that can “put you out of the game” for a bit. But whenever and however this occurs, you want to be back on your feet as quickly as possible, which makes SpiderTech’s “less pain and more activity” motto sound great.

But at the end of the day, can you really just put SpiderTech therapeutic tape on and go about your day free from muscle strains and joint pain? Is it really an alternative to pills, gels, and creams? And when it comes down to it, is SpiderTech really the “world’s #1 pre-cut elastic therapeutic tape?”

How SpiderTech Claims to Work

By working with your body to gently lift the skin, increase circulation, decrease agitation, and ease your pain, SpiderTech is a line of ready to apply pre-cut Kinesiology tape that claims to provide support for joint instability, sprains, muscle strains, weak, injured muscles and joints, and to help prevent further injury, all without adversely affecting healthy ranges of motion.

When compared to the competition, SpiderTech is made from one continuous piece of tape and uses patented EZ-apply technology, which eliminates the need for multiple overlapping pieces, while also making them easier to apply (see more about this in the final section). Each pre-cut piece of SpiderTech tape also has rounded edges, which are claimed to prevents it from catching on clothing and peeling before you’re ready to remove it. In fact, the company claims that SpiderTech tape can even be worn during strenuous exercise.

With this in mind, SpiderTech tape can be applied in 3 steps:

  1. Start with clean, dry skin that has no lotion and has trimmed (or no) hair. SpiderTech is not a “band aid,” so it should not be applied to irritated or broken skin.
  2. Tear off any perforations, remove the backing, and place the SpiderTech’s tape to any area where you’re experiencing pain (note: some of the more complicated pieces include numbered application tabs to make the process easier).
  3. Rub the center of the SpiderTech tape to activate the adhesive glue. Make sure it’s positioned properly before removing any excess backing, and don’t overlap any of the pieces. Finally, rub all areas of your SpiderTech tape to make sure everything is firmly in position.

SpiderTech tape is claimed to have been developed with advanced wave technology that can help activate nerve endings on your skin that signal your central nervous system to block the discomfort. In other words, SpiderTech claims to not only provide structural support, but to also alter your sensation of pain, depending on how the tape is applied.

Once applied, each cut of water-resistant, latex-free, and hypoallergenic SpiderTech tape is claimed to last up to 5 days. Regardless of its ease of use and long-lasting application though, SpiderTech is claimed to be safe for individuals of all ages, including children, adults, and seniors, and to be professionally machine cut in an ISO approved facility.

SpiderTech Pricing & Refund Policy

SpiderTech tape is available in 17 pre-cut designs, including lower back, upper knee and full knee, X spider, ankle, calf and arch, elbow, fan (medium, large, and small), groin, hamstring, hip, lower back, neck, postural (mid-back), left and right shoulder, and wrist versions, as well as in bulk roll and clinic packs. On top of this, SpiderTech comes in four different colors (beige, black, blue and red).

Due to the wide range of options, SpiderTech products range in price between $3.99 and $83.99, and in addition to the manufacturer, can be purchased at Walmart, VitaminShoppe.com, Amazon.com, and several other third-party retailers.

There is no refund policy listed on the SpiderTech website, so we contacted customer service and found that, if purchased directly, refunds are available only for faulty products, and you’ll have to prove that it was faulty in order to begin the process. Outside of these conditions, refunds are not available. However, if you purchase your SpiderTech tape through a third-party retailer, refund policies will vary.

If you have questions or concerns related to SpiderTech products, you can contact customer service directly at (866) 270-1753.

What Do Other Consumers Have to Say About SpiderTech Products?

Overall, it appears that SpiderTech kinesiology tape has a fairly evenly mixed online customer reputation. While some consumers appreciated that they’re pre-cut and claimed they provided effective pain relief, numerous others felt that the SpiderTech tape:

  • Didn’t provide any benefits
  • Was difficult to apply (tape does not appear to have an adhesive applied to all surfaces)
  • Comes at a high price (especially if you need to have one on your body at all times in order to experience relief)
  • Edges have a tendency to roll and make it not last as long as advertised

Can SpiderTech Really Provide You with Effective Pain Relief?

Although SpiderTech therapeutic tape appears to be a novel concept, can it really help improve your range of motion and decrease your pain? Perhaps, but consider the following before making your purchase:

What Does Science Have to Say?

Overall, the jury’s still out on whether or not kinesiology tape like SpiderTech provides any tangible benefits. According to an article featured in Road Bike Review, “Few of these claims have any scientific backing. But numerous testimonials on the subject show athletes support its use. What seems to be clear from scientific literature is that taping modifies proprioceptive feedback—the information sent from muscles and tendons to the brain.” In other words, “Tape acts as a reminder of sorts that tells the brain to protect the injured area. Taping works psychologically through an increased awareness and perception of stability, leading to a decreased fear of activity and decreased pain.”

WebMD also mentions that, while the science is still inconclusive, there is “little quality evidence to support the use of Kinesio tape over other types of elastic taping to manage or prevent sports injuries. Some experts have suggested there may be a placebo effect in using the tape, with athletes believing it will be helpful.”

In layman’s terms, this means that the presence of the tape may provide mental benefits to help you overcome the pain, but there is little data showing that kinesiology tape can actually provide any physical benefits.

Sizing & Usage

Next, consider that SpiderTech tape was created as a single-use product, which means that once you take it off, it can’t be reapplied. This means that if the edges begin curling up or the tape begins lifting, its effectiveness may be decreased and you’ll have to apply another, which can quickly become expensive.

Also, although SpiderTech claims that their kinesiology tape has been designed to fit approximately 80% of the population, we encountered numerous reviews claiming that it didn’t fit correctly. And if you purchased your tape directly from SpiderTech, you won’t be able to obtain a refund, even if it couldn’t be used due to an improper fit.

Bottom line:

While kinesiology tape like SpiderTech has not been shown to provide any tangible physical benefits, it may provide a mental boost, which can be just as good in some instances. However, due to SpiderTech’s strict no refund policy, we might recommend purchasing it through a third-party retailer.

  • Terrible customer service, bait & switch

    • Alameda CA,
    • Sep 29, 2015

I bought the precut gentle wrist pack. What I received did not match the photos online; instead of discreet pink as pictured, "SpiderTech" was emblazoned across it in dark blue. I am not a walking billboard. When I called to discuss this, the customer service rep laughed at me. I explained that the instructions were also erroneous, missing the most important part of the application instructions. He laughed at this as well.

I applied the product less than 12 hours ago to clean, shaved, dry skin, and it is already peeling. I will not purchase anything from this company again.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

  • Fraud, there are better solutions

    • Pennsylvania,

All this does is TRY to restrict movement to aid in relief but a couple of Ibuprofen s have a much better effect. Any Physical Therapist will tell you the WORST thing you can do is LIMIT movement which can lead to impingement and bone-spurs.

The adhesive on the tape makes my skin itch and sometimes feel like its burning.

Think a much better solution to joint and muscle pain is to use a $40 TENS unit which can be used over and over again.

It also allows you to reposition the pads to customize your therapy for relief.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    SpiderTech tape

    • Edison NJ,
    • Aug 20, 2015

The product is a complete fraud. I did get past separating the sections before it got all gummed up. I really didn't think it would work, but I spend more on other things. I suffer from sever, arthritic, neurological problems, muscle, and nerve damage in my knees. It's due to a very bad accident involving a fall. Also just regular wear and tear. Weight is an issue too.

There's no room for error either. Mess one up and you're out of money. Also the material felt very flimsy after I stopped being delicate with it. Waste of money. Disappointed, I was right.

    Tried it. No thanks.

    • Loxley, AL,
    • Jan 19, 2015

I have constant pain from several causes. My wife bought it for me so I tried it without pre-judging. Since she puts it on my back it is not a hassle. She was surprised at the $6+ dollars per use which is comparable to other pain relievers which I still had to take be cause it didn't work.

It should be helpful in restricting movement slightly to aid natural healing but there are reusable alternatives which winds up being more affordable. Even if you get a medical brace.

Recommendations: to people I dislike, go for it.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
