It seems a new diet plan appears almost every day, especially right after the New Year when everyone’s motivation is high to achieve their weight loss goals. But is The Baseball Diet Plan something that can legitimately help you lose weight, or will it go down in history as just another fad diet? Consider the following:
Who is Dr. Will Aguila?
While not necessarily known nationally, Dr. Will Aguila appears to be an active member of his Tampa, FL hometown, especially related to his role as general and bariatric surgeon at Florida Surgical Weight Loss Centers, as he himself claims to have struggled with weight issues in the past. In addition, Dr. Aguila has written several articles for the Huffington Post and has completed a variety of interviews with big names in the industry for his The Dr. A Show broadcast.
What is Metabolic Confusion? Can it Really Help You Lose Weight?
When dieting, after your body has adjusted to your new calorie intake, it will often go into what’s known as “starvation mode,” which is a natural defense mechanism where it begins storing calories to prevent weight loss.
However, metabolic confusion (also known as “calorie shifting” or “cycled eating”) is a technique that’s “based on the concept of confusing the metabolism by mixing up the amount of calories you consume each day, in the hope that the body does not become accustomed to one particular calorie intake and so kick starts the metabolism” by increasing its resting metabolic rate. In other words, this fluctuation in calorie intake is meant to prevent your body from going into starvation mode, thus increasing the calories you burn and the weight you lose as a result.
However, according to this same source, “There is no scientific evidence that supports a calorie shifting diet for weight loss.” In fact, according to this April 2014 clinical study regarding the difference between calorie shifting (CSD) and traditional calorie deficit diets, some participants felt more satisfied using CSD, although there appears to have been no differences in weight loss.
Unanswered Questions About the Baseball Diet Plan
When it comes down to it, The Baseball Diet Plan website provides very little information about how the diet actually works, which left us scratching our head about some fairly basic questions.
In other words, how customizable is it (will it work just as well for someone who’s 150 pounds overweight as someone who’s 15 pounds overweight)? How long does the program last? Are there any exercise recommendations included with it (after all, weight loss is just as much about physical activity as it is what you eat)? How much weight can you realistically expect to lose using The Baseball Diet Plan?
Other than the above information and a few images likening parts of the diet to different baseball positions, the plan’s website simply doesn’t let us know.

Will The Baseball Diet Plan Help You Achieve Weight Loss Success?
Chopping to the Point: At its most basic, the Baseball Diet Plan appears to provide 3 primary benefits:
- Uses baseball terminology to help explain the different aspects of your diet, which might make it more easily understood by dieters. However, there are hundreds (or even thousands) of other consumer diets readily available that use everyday language. Although, if you’re especially into baseball, then The Baseball Diet Plan may be especially interesting to you.
- Claimed to use inexpensive everyday foods that can easily be found at your local grocery store. Again, this isn’t necessarily unique in the world of diet plans.
- The Baseball Diet Plan is gamified, which can help make losing weight fun. In addition, you can compete against others for even more motivation.
With this said, the central premise behind The Baseball Diet Plan is the use of metabolic confusion, which has insufficient evidence showing it can help you lose weight any differently (or better) than standard calorie-restriction diets.
