About The Rainbow Juice Cleanse

Created by Dr. Ginger Southall, The Rainbow Juice Cleanse program is claimed to use fresh, raw, and organic, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet vegetable juices to help you lose weight, boost your energy, and supercharge your health. In fact, The Rainbow Juice Cleanse is claimed to detoxify your body and help you lose up to 7 pounds in 7 days.

According to the program’s website, The Rainbow Juice Cleanse is claimed to focus on a different color vegetable each day, in order to ensure “the best possible nutrition profile and guarantee positive results,” and to help you shed pounds, experience anti-aging benefits, renew your energy, and balance your body.

Sure, The Rainbow Juice Cleanse appears to provide some very positive health benefits, and in a fairly short amount of time to boot. But when it comes down to it, is this detoxifying juice cleanse worth your money? And do you even need it in the first place?

These are some of the important questions we’ll answer about The Rainbow Juice Cleanse. But first, let’s take a closer look at the different programs available.

Rainbow Juice Cleanse Options

The Rainbow Juice Cleanse comes in three different programs, depending on your personal preference and readiness to commit:

The Two-Week Rainbow Warm-Up

Allows you continue most of your normal diet, with the addition of one Rainbow Cleanse juice per day. Here, you’ll be able to slowly transition into the program at your own pace, while incorporating Rainbow foods as you please.

According to the company, this option might be best suited for individuals with health problems, or for those who aren’t yet ready to give up all their bad eating habits.

The One-Week Rainbow Rev-Up

If you’re ready to give up your bad habits but not yet ready to begin the full Rainbow Juice Cleanse program, this option allows you to eat all the Rainbow Cleanse foods and juices for days 1 through 3, followed by a single day of nothing but juices. Then, days 5 through 7 will resume with all the Rainbow Cleanse foods and juices.

According to the company, this might be a good method of transitioning into the full-on 7-Day Program (more about this next), or you can remain in the Rev-Up indefinitely.

The 7-Day Rainbow Juice Cleanse

The Full Rainbow Juice Cleanse program involves consuming only “phytonutrient-loaded, low-glycemic” juices for 7 days.

If this is your first juice cleanse, the company recommends consuming only Rainbow Cleanse foods for 4 days prior to beginning, which will prime your digestive system to “transition away from cooked and/or processed foods.” On the other hand, if you’ve juiced before, you can jump right in to the cleanse.

The company claims this one-week program will provide benefits such as detoxification, immune boosting, anti-aging, and increased energy.

What Are Rainbow Vegetables? Do They Provide Health Benefits?

While there isn’t much information provided on the Rainbow Juice Cleanse website, MomSteam.com provides the following information about different colored vegetables:

Red foods get their color from lycopene, an antioxidant that may help prevent free radical damage. However, WebMD claims lycopene is only “possibly effective” for preventing bladder cancer and diabetes, and all other claims have insufficient clinical evidence to support them.

Orange and yellow vegetables contain alpha carotene and beta-carotene, which can also help prevent free radical damage, in addition to improving eyesight. Like lycopene, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene are carotenoids, which have shown some promise in inhibiting androgen receptors, which can lead to prostate cancer, although clinical trials have “yielded inconsistent results.”

The chlorophyll, calcium, and other minerals contained in green vegetables may help inhibit carcinogens. However, other than reducing pancreas swelling, neither of these substances has enough clinical evidence showing them to provide any health benefits.

Blue, indigo, and violet vegetables contain anthocyanins, which may improve heart health and reduce high blood pressure. Anthocyanins are colorless and odorless flavanoids, although there is insufficient clinical evidence showing them to have any health benefits.

Is Juice Detoxification Necessary?

As we’ve previously mentioned in many of our detox supplement reviews, “There is no evidence that those detox diets do any kind of detoxification in the body.” In other words, for otherwise healthy individuals, your liver and kidneys do a perfectly good job of ridding your body of any potential toxins, and drinking nothing but juice for 7 days won’t assist the process.

With this said, according to a 2014 CNN article, “New research shows eating up to seven servings of fruits and vegetables a day can have a significant impact on your lifespan. For those of us who don't have time to cut up or cook two servings with every meal, juicing is an easy way to consume them on the go.” However, this article concludes that “Juicing in moderation can help you consume essentials nutrients, but it's not a good way to detox or diet.”

Is The Rainbow Juice Cleanse Safe?

While The Rainbow Juice Cleanse may not actually detox your body any better than it could do on its own, can it help you lose weight?

For the most part, embarking on a juice “cleanse” means that individuals will often consume less calories than they burn (known as a calorie deficit), which is the primary method of losing weight. In other words, it’s not necessarily the vegetables you’re consuming that are causing you to lose weight; it’s the sudden change in calorie consumption.

With this said, most medical professionals recommend that 1-2 pounds per week represents healthy weight loss. As such, by causing you to lose up to 7 pounds in 7 days, The Rainbow Juice Cleanse may not represent healthy weight loss that can be sustained over the long term.

Who is Dr. Ginger Southall?

Dr. Ginger is a health and wellness advocate and author of Dr. Ginger’s Fat Funeral Detox (of which The Rainbow Juice Cleanse is a part), and is passionate about helping people address their health challenges and inspire “radical behavioral changes.” In order to accomplish this, Dr. Ginger uses a 3-pronged approach involving 1) the mind-body connection, 2) super nutrition, and 3) detoxification.

Although Dr. Ginger appears to have been in practice for several years, she and her Rainbow Juice Cleanse gained a huge boost in popularity after being featured on Dr. Oz’s blog

Can The Rainbow Juice Cleanse Help You Detox & Lose Weight?

Chopping to the Point: While juicing in any form can certainly provide your body with the essential vitamins and nutrients it needs in order to function optimally, there isn’t any clinical evidence showing that it can boost detoxification beyond your body’s natural abilities. In addition, the rapid weight loss provided by The Rainbow Juice Cleanse may not be healthy, and almost certainly won’t stick around for the long term.

Because of these concerns, we might recommend speaking with your physician about juicing, healthy weight loss, and detoxification before placing an order for The Rainbow Juice Cleanse.
