As an all-natural product that can help you get the deep, restful sleep you need, Alteril claims to be an alternative to over the counter or prescription sleep aids. And ultimately, the manufacturer claims that by making a big difference in your sleeping habits, Alteril can help you wake up refreshed, energized, and ready to take on the day.
If you suffer from insomnia, you understand the toll it can take on your energy, drive, and even your work habits, so you’re likely interested to find out if Alteril represents a legitimate way of helping you sleep better. We’ll get to that in a moment, but first, let’s find out what Alteril’s all about.
How Alteril Works
According to the Alteril website, more than 40 million Americans have trouble sleeping, due to a wide variety of factors such as stress, noise, pain, or even just the process of growing older. However, Alteril claims to be a natural sleep aid alternative to prescription medications, and which can help you to fall asleep when you want to, safely and gently. On top of this, Alteril is also claimed to prolong deep sleep, reduce nighttime awakenings, and improve the overall quality of your sleep.
In order to accomplish this, Alteril is claimed to use 3 primary ingredients (see more about this in the final section):
- L-Tryptophan – An essential amino acid that’s converted into serotonin after being absorbed by your body, which may help promote sleep.
- Melatonin – May help improve the overall quality of your sleep.
- Valerian – May help you fall asleep faster.
Some of Alteril’s additional pharmaceutical-grade components are claimed to include Chamomile, L-Theanine, Lemon Balm, Hops, Passion Flower, and “other sleep/relaxation-inducing ingredients.”
In order to begin using Alteril, the manufacturer recommends taking 1-2 capsules about an hour before bedtime. When taken as recommended and after you’ve had 8 hours of sleep, Alteril is claimed to not produce any kind of “hangover” effect, to not impair morning concentration or physical performance, and to not result in dependency or side effects.
Alteril Pricing & Refund Policy
If purchased directly through the manufacturer, Biotab Nutraceuticals, Inc based out of Pasadena, CA, a 30ct bottle of Alteril is priced at $4.95 plus free shipping. However, you can also choose rush shipping for an additional $6.99 (total of $11.94). CA residents will be subject to state sales tax as well.
According to the Manufacturer’s Guarantee, Alteril customers are eligible to receive a complete refund if you’re not happy for any reason. In order to initiate the process, you’ll need to contact customer service at 800-698-8182.
If you’d rather purchase Alteril elsewhere, you’ll also find the sleep aid available at Walmart, Amazon.com, CVS, GNC, and many other third-party retailers.
What Do Other Consumers Have to Say About Alteril?
When taken as a whole, it seems that Alteril’s customer reviews are evenly split across the board, with some of the most common compliments claiming that it helps you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and to wake up refreshed (just like the product’s marketing pitch).
However, not every consumer who took Alteril experienced these same results. As such, some of the most common complaints appear to reference failure to work (e.g. didn’t result in sleep, or resulted in very little sleep), feeling groggy the following day, headaches upon waking, upset stomach, and bad taste. In addition, several consumers warned that while Alteril may not be addictive, your body will likely adapt to the sleep aid, making it increasingly less effective the more frequently it’s used.
Can Alteril Improve Your Sleep? Will You Wake Energized?
Similar to other non-prescription sleep aids such as Lunar Sleep and Whole Body Herbal Sleep, Alteril claims to be a natural way of accomplishing a good night’s sleep, as well as all the benefits that come along with it. But when it comes down to it, can Alteril really help improve your sleep? Perhaps, but keep the following in mind:
Not a One-Size-Fits-All Solution
First and foremost, Alteril shouldn’t be considered any kind of “miracle” sleep aid. This is because although it does appear to have helped a number of people with their sleep problems, as with any other nutritional supplement, it won’t work as well (or even at all) for everyone who tries it.
To outline this: Based on the numerous customer reviews we found during our research, some individuals may fall asleep faster, but not sleep for very long. Some may sleep peacefully, while others may experience vivid nightmares. And some might sleep all through the night, but will still wake feeling groggy or “off-center” the following day.
In other words, when it comes to Alteril, it’s almost certain that your mileage will vary.
Ingredients & Efficacy
It’s also important to note that according to WebMD, Alteril’s 3 primary ingredients, L-Tryptophan, Melatonin and Valerian, may help individuals with non-medically related insomnia to relax and to fall asleep faster, but not necessarily to lengthen the amount of sleep they receive or to improve its overall quality.
On top of this, the Alteril doesn’t provide a product label on their website, so there’s no way to confirm if they’ve included a full list of ingredients, or to verify the dosage of each ingredient the supplement contains.
Do You Regularly Suffer from Insomnia?
If so, you may be able to use Alteril on an infrequent basis for help with falling asleep more quickly. However, because many customers have stated that Alteril will become less effective the more frequently it’s used, it’s probably not going to represent a long-term solution.
With this in mind, if you regularly suffer from insomnia, you’ll almost certainly want to speak with your physician about the most effective sleep aids for your specific circumstance.
Bottom line: For many customers, Alteril appears to represent a solid non-prescription alternative for occasional insomnia. After speaking with your physician though, you’ll probably want to purchase the sleep aid from a local retailer to save on S&H charges, as well as to make the return process easier if you’re not satisfied.
- An all-natural sleep aid that claims to help you sleep better and to feel more energized each morning.
- Available from a variety of on and off-line retailers.
- Appears to have an evenly mixed online reputation.
- Like any medication, Alteril will not work equally well (or at all) for everyone who takes it.
- There is insufficient clinical evidence showing that Alteril’s 3 primary ingredients can help individuals stay asleep longer, or to improve the quality of their sleep.
- Many customers have claimed that it’s effectiveness decreases with continued use, so it shouldn’t be considered a long-term solution for frequent insomnia.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace
I was taking Rx sleeping pills for many years and 10 months ago decided to opt for a natural remedy. Melatonin didn't help nor did Valerian. I discovered Alteril on the shelf at Target. The combo of ingredients was impressive so I decided to give it a try. I was truly impressed.
Within 20-30 minutes after ingesting it, I felt a pleasant wave of sleepiness come upon me. It was a struggle to finish watching my movie as I drifted into blissful slumber. I awoke a couple of hours later to reposition and fell back to sleep. Come morning I woke up sans groggy.
Alteril is a terrific compound. I've used both types, the gel caps and the tablets, both equally effective. I've gifted Alteril to a few friends who are struggling with sleeping and now they're "hooked"...in a good way!
I might add that everyone is different when it comes to the efficacy of sedation. Taking it on an empty vs. full tummy might make a difference as would the individual's weight.
I truly like this product and highly recommend you give it a try!
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Woke up with very dull headache
The product did not help me sleep at all; made insomnia even worse than usual. I woke up with a headache, groggy and upset stomach. I am definitely taking this back and would not recommend it to anyone.
Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
