I don't know how American Home Shield is still in business. They are the worst company that I have ever dealt with. All they do is steal from customers. It has been 30 days since the AC broke at a clients house, the last AC that went out. Home Warranty of America wanted $2400 in "non-covered" charges to fix the AC. A brand new system is only $3200. Scam!

  • Air conditioner not taken care of

    Overall Experience:

My air conditioner stopped working so I called American Home Shield and they sent a company out within a couple of days. The company they sent were nice enough, however, they told me that my 24-year-old unit should have lasted over 40 years (which according to everything I have read is just not true and should be 20-25 years) and said I would be hearing from someone.

After two days I received a missed call. So I called back and it was American Home Shield. She looked it up for me and said "Oh the Denial Department called you." She than told me that they would not take care of my air conditioner because sprinklers had hit it. My unit is 24 years old. I asked that someone call me but no one did. I called in 3 times and had to hold over 30 minutes each time and was just given the run around. I asked that someone give me a call each time but no one ever did.

So I paid for a warranty on my air conditioner that apparently according to them was unwarrantable. Plus on top of that I had to pay $100 for them just to come out to find out it was unwarrantable. I really feel this is very wrong. If they are going to try to find excuses not to repair or replace items it is not right. When I purchased the home almost 2 years ago the inspector never mentioned anything about the air conditioner being in danger of damage or that it was damaged. I feel the whole thing was really handled wrong and their not getting a hold of me or calling me back is totally unacceptable. Temperatures were up to 117 and I had no air.

We needed a fix on our dryer. Found out they bumped up my payment after the first year. We put in the request on Monday and they took 4 days to try to find someone. They said the Premier company would come out between 1-5 PM and nobody showed up. I called 3 more times to get someone here. Still waiting for the first service call. I could have saved the cash on this and bought two new dryers. False advertising and fraudulent service agreement. This is a service scam. Wondering how much they make off people who trust them until they find out for themselves how bad they really are. Worse service on TV or the internet.

If you are approached by AHS, run as soon as you can. I like to state facts, so I will keep this one simple…

FACT 1: Dishwasher leaking and request placed online 3/21/2016.

FACT 2: Technician from GE arrives, turns on nozzle. States nothing was wrong with the dishwasher.

FACT 3: Ran the dishwasher on 3/27/2016 leak turns into a flood.

FACT 4: Placed another request over the phone on 3/27/2016. I was told that a technician would not arrive until the following week.

FACT 5: On 3/28/2016 kitchen is completely flooded – Service request ticket now placed in “escalation” status by AHS.

FACT 6: Technician #2 from different vendor arrives on 3/29/2016, says cost to repair too high, and the dishwasher should be replaced.

FACT 7: Technician #2 turns nozzle on to dishwasher, cabinet and kitchen flooded again.

FACT 8: Called American Home Shield on 3/31/2016, they have not received any information from the technician.

FACT 9: On 4/1/2016 given another number from AHS to call to order a new dishwasher. Was told while I was at work that I MUST be home to provide them with the dimensions of the old dishwasher before they could order the new dishwasher. They stated that they could not use the dimension provided by the GE technician or the second vendor they sent out.

FACT 10: Measured dishwasher, and was told my dimensions were incorrect. My dimensions were sent to another department and someone would call me back at a later time.

FACT 11: Received a call on 4/4/2016 from a GE technician #2 that said he fixed my dishwasher. LOL!

FACT 12: Received a call from technician #2 on 4/4/2016 stating that they had a replacement but could not give me a date or time for the install.

FACT 13: After several emails, several phone calls, and several days missed of work, my dishwasher was finally installed on 4/5/2016.

These are the steps AHS uses to repair your appliances. If you choose this company BEWARE. You will lose time from work, forced to make multiple phone calls, and send many emails before your issue is resolved. I have canceled my contract after one month of using this company, and switched to another company. Like the saying goes: “Cheaper is not always better.”

  • Not worth it

    Overall Experience:

I've been trying to convince my husband for at least 12 years to cancel this contract with this current experience I am getting my way. Our washer broke 11/16. On 11/17 we paid $75 to learn the machine was not worth fixing. We went out of the country on 11/18, and on returning expected a check in the mail toward a replacement washer. Instead, we had an email stating AHS needed a second opinion. Another service company came out 11/30. Same diagnosis. On 12/2 after business hours, received an email with a generic list attached, requesting that we respond with some general info about our washer. I called Saturday, 12/3, and waited to speak with someone for 20 minutes and was told the email request was so they could source a replacement washer -- brand, color, dimensions not guaranteed -- and at the option of AHS, they may just issue us a check. No estimated date of delivery. I feel this is a stall tactic. It cost me $40 to do 2 weeks worth of laundry; afraid I will have to do it again. My husband is finally convinced we could have replaced every appliance in the house with what we have paid in monthly premiums and "copays". I have no complaints about the quality of the two service companies that came out on this job.

  • Don't deal with American Home Shield

    • By Jameson Myers,

    Overall Experience:

American Home Shield is a scam. I purchased a home warranty a year ago and opted to purchase a warranty with an upgraded coverage to cover the pool and hot tub because I had concerns about issues that might arise in the future with these items.

At closing, I received a paper documenting the purchase of the warranty and a promise from American Home Shield to send me my full contract package in the coming days which would detail my coverage. That way, if I ever had an issue with any equipment or appliances with the house or pool or hot tub, I would know and understand my coverage.

Here it is, two weeks before my warranty is to expire and I have an issue with my pool light (electrical). I called American Home Shield and submitted a service request, and the contractor came out and diagnosed the problem. He said that it should not be an issue at all for American Home Shield to cover it since they do these all the time for them. Later on that day, I received a voicemail from American Home Shield saying they denied the claim. I'm out a $75 service fee for the contractor for nothing.

The contractor is irate with American Home Shield because they're saying the pool light is not a part of the pool. How absurd is that! Pool equipment it is a part of the pool. I called back to American Home Shield and asked to speak with a manager, and the lady said that an email request had to be submitted to have a manager give you a callback. I said, "no, I will speak to a manager, or I will not get off the phone." So finally, a lady named Portia got on the phone, and I'm almost positive she was not a legitimate manager because she was not professional and just kept saying there is nothing we can do, and that we did send you a contract on April 26th when we didn't even close on our house until after that date.

The bottom line is that American Home Shield doesn't care if they send you a contract, they would prefer if you didn't know what is covered or not. They just want you to purchase the warranty, and then they start subjectively deciding whether they want to cover your appliance or home items or not. There is currently 7,990 complaints that have been closed by American Home Shield in the last three years. I say closed because who really knows if the customer was really satisfied with the result of their complaint.

I will tell everyone I know to not ever purchase a home warranty from American Home Shield. It's very telling in business when you have to keep changing your name. American Home Shield has been known by at least five other names. Please save yourself time, energy, and money and don't deal with this scam of a company.

They are unresponsive, wait times to speak with a person to even request service is on average an hour. They have minimal contractors on their list even for emergencies, they have no direct contact number once you have had a bad experience and generally do not care if your issue is handled in a timely fashion.

I had some sort of leak ongoing, and after 1.5 hours on hold to speak with someone, they told me they had hours and hours to even locate a service professional who then had greater than 24 hours to respond. They refused to authorize my hiring of an outside contractor with subsequent reimbursement. The ongoing issue has caused further issues including electrical and drywall that they refuse to cover calling them "secondary damage."

They told me they do not care if they have bad reviews and offered no apologies or reasonable solutions whatsoever.

This is the most disreputable company I have ever dealt with. DO NOT use them for any reason!

  • Over one hour waiting with only machine automated services

    Overall Experience:

The repair service is okay, but the waiting time to speak with someone about an issue is up to one hour or more. Yes, you will be on hold for over an hour for help. My fairly new A/C went out after two weeks from the precious repair (leaking Schrader valve). All the service request is automated, and there's no human interaction.

The recent automation has someone coming in two days. I have two babies, and the house is 85 degrees. I can't simply talk to a person to request another A/C company. There's no place to email anyone and the only people to pick up the phone are in sales. They nicely tell you they can only help sell policies. If you like talking to automated machines and problem-solving for days, with no human to explain the logic, this is your warranty. I feel subhuman. Get a local company quicker.

Where do I start? Let's just say that I called American Home Shield (AHS) on July 3rd to report that my wash machine was not working. Today is July 26th and still no washing machine.

I'm a renter and at the mercy of this awful company that my landlord chose to avoid the responsibility of setting up service calls and maintaining his property. I've had two different service technicians look at the washer. The first one looked inside and took pictures. The second one actually did something. Now they tell me a washer has to be ordered from the manufacturer and will take another seven to ten days. All this on top of waiting on hold 20 minutes each time I call into this awful company.

I could have ordered online from Home Depot and had it delivered and installed three weeks ago. But, because I'm a renter and have to use the company the landlord set up, I'm still waiting! The second technician was great-from Longlane Home Services. He's the only person who actually had some answers and so far, has done anything.

On 11/07/2017, a technician for AC unit came to my home to do a job on my AC unit because the heating element was not working. After working for almost 2 hours, I find out that the heating strip for this unit was corroded due the climate effects in Florida and the very little use we have for it. But now we are anticipating this coming winter, and this element is not working.

I have spent one hour yesterday and one hour today for somebody to pick up the line and be able to discuss this problem, however, when I dialed the number to get a new contract before I finish with the last word, I have someone on the phone trying to sell me one contract from Home Shield. This means they have quick service for a new contract and a terrible waiting time when there is a claim. Very unfair for a paying customer with a problem.

  • Fridge and dishwasher broken for two months without repair!

    Overall Experience:

The first year was GREAT. The second year I hardly called. This year has been a NIGHTMARE! My fridge has been working but broken for OVER TWO MONTHS. A diagnosis was made, and it seems Amercian Home Shield would not pay them, so they got me a second, and now a third company is next, BUT none assigned. The fridge is on the verge of shutting down. The airplane-like noise has stopped, which likely means the fan is now broken. There is ice on the back wall, and the temp is often low, and food has to be thrown out. I have NO idea if this will EVER be fixed! I will contact the media next.

  • Lesson learned: Save up yourself for home repairs.

    Overall Experience:

Based on my own experience and those of many others online, I'm not sure how American Home Shield (AHS) is still in business. It's mostly a scam!

I called them last Thursday because I had a serious plumbing leak that was soaking through my garage wall and exterior brick facade in the front of the house. The contractor came, tore three medium-sized holes in my wall, charged me an extra $55 over my $75 deductible to cut through cabinetry, mind you, all just to tell me something I already knew, which is that I had a serious plumbing issue (slab leak), and rolled out after collecting the cash. The contractor now wants $3,700 to fix the leak, of which AHS will only pay $1,000.

I called my home insurance company, who will pay up to $2,500 for most of the repairs. Now, I've been trying to reach AHS to cash out so I can get the $1,000 they promised to put towards hiring my own contractor, but trying to get back in touch with someone in claims has become another headache I can do without, considering what I'm already going through with this slab leak. So, what exactly am I paying 53 bucks a month to AHS for and a $75 deductible when I need service (that turned into $130)? I'm paying basically to have a contractor come tear my house up further, and then they still want me to pay thousands out of pocket for a major repair, and on top of that, I can't get even halfway mediocre service when I most need it? Seems I'd be better off saving that $53 a month and deductible in a bank account for serious repairs.

Based on my own experience and those of others, I think AHS and the contractors are in bed together to scam homeowners. On another note, it's totally not acceptable that I have to wait over an hour to receive help with my claim when I can select their sales or new home buyer options when calling, and most times get a pick up on the first ring. Higher call volume my butt!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

  • Believe the negative reviews

    Overall Experience:

I am in the second year of my contract with this bogus company. Every negative review about this company is true.

They've taken my money every month for 16 months, and I've attempted to file two claims. It became so frustrating to deal with AHS that I paid out of pocket for the repairs. It should be illegal for them to operate. I've been on hold 46 minutes trying to cancel my contract. The customer service representative said they don't have any cancellation forms so she'll have to do it online. What, are you serious? How complicated can it be to cancel a contract? Oh, I know, as complicated as it is to get service from this company. Makes complete sense now.

Please, don't deal with this company. They are a 100 percent scam.

  • American Home Shield is a scam

    Overall Experience:

Do not waste your time or money on this company. We have had nothing but bad experiences on every single item that we have had to claim. Currently, we have been without heat in our home since December 28th. They have made mistake after mistake and have yet to order and replace the unit. The only offer they would give us to get by is a $125 credit to buy a floor heater! My home is over 3000 square feet, so that does not heat a room let alone a home. What kind of company would think it is right for a family to go three months without a heater? This company is a joke, and I would never recommend using them for a home warranty company. The customer service is horrible, and they are impossible to work with. Buyer beware!

  • They suck

    Overall Experience:

I have been trying to get a ceiling fan replaced for three weeks now. I had them send one service out and they determined it needed to be replaced. Then I had to wait for a second company to come and install. The second company backed out saying they didn't have a ladder tall enough to work on it (?). So then they sent another and when they came, simply told me they had one cheap brand to replace it with, so advised me to get my own. So I did, then found out I had opted for a cash leu option without knowing it.

Anyway, three weeks later I still haven't got my ceiling fan replaced and am waiting to hear back from customer service. Customer service (ha)! It is making me wonder what kind of hell I will have to go through if something major like HVAC breaks down.

I will be searching for other home warranty options!

I requested AC service on May 19th, and the contractor came around 25th but said they needed to speak with AHS to determine what and how the work can be done. Since then I’ve been waiting, calling and texting to get an update. AHS did send me a letter two weeks later stating that the access needed to repair the AC won’t be covered. Well, I didn't want to argue, all I want is to get my AC fixed ASAP, even it will be out-of-pocket. I passed this info to both AHS and the contractor and was told that they will work on it to get me a ballpark cost and timeline.

Another week passed by and I found out that the contractor has been lying all this time. They were supposed to meet with the HOA but never showed up, and they twisted the story saying that they couldn't get a hold of the HOA to get instructions as to where to mount the replacement freon line. HOA confirmed that they have been waiting for the contractor to come in but as of today no one showed up.

Well, it’s June 14th, almost an entire month without AC, and my folks are seniors who have various types of health issues. AHS failed their customers big time for assigning such a dishonest contractor and failed to offer any solutions. I paid the service call fee for nothing but wasted one month without AC. You can’t live in Texas in the summer without AC in your house. I'm calling someone else for service and canceling my plan with AHS.

Even the lady I spoke to on the phone replied "yes" when I accused this company of being a scam. They do not do anything that they claim they will. They state they will help replace AC...not true, they just continue to make you pay the fee associated with getting it serviced and replace part after part even when the specialists say it's an old system that needs to be replaced. We were without a stove/oven for six weeks while they tried and failed multiple times to fix our unit. Our AC recently stopped working, and they sent us to a third party vendor, Eagle Heating and Air. That vendor missed three scheduled appointments with us. I then called another vendor to come out as it was 87 degrees in our home and unbearable. That vendor came out the very next day and fixed our unit. It's the middle of summer in Southwest Florida, 101 degrees with humidity. My A/C is out (not working at all), and I have an 87-year-old living at the property. I called in a service request and was told that it would be 24 hours for the tech to call and schedule service.

I called back, explained that I have an 87-year-old at the property and need someone immediately. AHS said they would expedite the repair, gave me a new dispatch number, and told me to call the tech after an hour. I called the tech who told me the earliest they could get there is Wednesday morning (today is Monday morning). So, two full days in over 100 degrees without A/C, I asked. I explained that AHS told me the service would be expedited. The tech (dispatch) said, "I would have never said that because the earliest I can get you in is Wednesday mid-morning."

I called AHS back again (third time) and told them what happened. They told me the prior agent should have called the tech and confirmed they could do expedited service. I told AHS, the prior agent told me they did. AHS response was, "well, I can try to find someone else." I reiterated that I have an elderly adult at the property and simply cannot wait three days. I asked them to credit me back the service call fee and found a local vendor who showed up 30 minutes after I called.

Long story short, if it's an A/C repair, don't count on your AHS warranty. I don't feel the AHS warranty is worth the money as every time I have tried to use it, I've never been able to get anything repaired. Find another home warranty specialist.

After five weeks of no AC, I finally called in an AC contractor recommended by a neighbor. They came the same day and had the AC properly diagnosed in 15 minutes. The AHS contractor had repeatedly overcharged the refrigerant and added unneeded "stop leak." This destroyed the compressor and clogged the TX valve causing the freezing. The compressor and TX Valve ($2,500) was 75% of the cost of a replacement unit, so I opted for the replacement.

This was done the next morning and now I have a cool Florida home, no thanks to AHS. Reading through all the problems with AHS on this site and others, it seems to be a tactic of AHS to band-aid and stall until the consumer is forced to pay for proper repairs themselves. For small stuff, AHS just replaces to get some good reviews, but as soon as it would cost them real money they go to "plan B," and we are forced to properly repair the costly repair ourselves. I believe there are enough of us now with this same experience to think about a class action suit.

As other reviews, AHS has gone downhill this past year. Previously I had always had good service from them, and they used competent contractors. This seems not the case anymore. I have been without AC for over a month now, and it still isn't fixed. Two of their contractors have been out a total of 8 times, and now they want to replace the same TX valve a second time. Each time I sacrifice a day of work, and have to site in a 90 degree home waiting for them. I call and call, both AHS and the contractor, and no one seems concerned it is now 5 weeks without AC. When I ask if this is typical, more than one rep tells me she has had others waiting longer. I am giving up on AHS and will contract my own service companies from now on.
