About Bark Stop

By HighYa Staff

Bark Stop claims to be a patented, revolutionary dog training system that calms persistent barking, jumping, and other misbehaviors almost instantly, without pain or training. And because Bark Stop uses no batteries, wires, painful collars, or spray devices, it’s totally maintenance-free, easy to use, and humane.

According to the manufacturer, Bark Stop is a “proven technique used by professional dog trainers across the world” that can be closed and silenced when not in use, allowing it to be taken with you wherever you go, whether at home or the dog park.

Look, you love your dog, but the persistent barking is becoming a nuisance. You also realize that your dog’s constant barking could be causing them anxiety, and you want them to feel as good as possible. But should you buy Bark Stop? Consider the following:

Is Bark Stop a Shake Can?

At its most basic, Bark Stop is redesigned version of a training tool commonly known as a shake can, which is simply a container with some kind of noisemaking material inside. And when your dog exhibits an undesirable behavior, you shake the can, interrupt their train of thought, and instruct them what you’d like them to do.

As a result (if performed consistently), your dog will associate the shake can’s sound with being scolded, and will learn to stop whatever they’re doing as a result.

Do Shake Cans Like Bark Stop Really Work?

In a nutshell, it depends. Why? Because dogs have personalities (and the associated flaws) just like humans, so what works well for one dog may not work for another. Because of this, it might be best to speak with your veterinarian about trainers they’d recommend to help adjust your dog’s behavior.

With this said, using a shake can like Bark Stop is typically considered a humane, reasonably effective method of stopping your dog’s barking, but only if it’s used regularly and properly. However, some dog trainers claim that making your dog associate a certain noise with scolding (known as noise shyness) can do more harm than good.

What’s Causing Your Dog to Bark?

According to Cesar Millan, dogs bark as a form of communication, so periodic barking related to external stimuli (such as at squirrels in the yard, someone walking past the house, etc.) should be considered normal and acceptable.

However, when the barking becomes excessive, your dog could be “sending you a distress signal. Somewhere his needs as an animal are not being met. Is his world anchored by a pack leader who projects calm-assertive energy? Are you walking with him every day, which exercises his body and his mind? Is he living a balanced life? If nuisance barking is a problem, consider these issues to find a solution. It’s the best way to show real love for your dog.”

Again, this is where the help of your veterinarian and a quality trainer can help address your dog’s core issues that are causing the excessive barking in the first place.

Other Anti-Barking Products

Finally, because barking is a common problem experienced by many dog owners, there are thousands of other products available on the marketplace, including Bark Away, Pet Command, and even Magic Leash, not to mention those available from your local pet store, as well as online.

In fact, there are even DIY shake can options you can make in minutes, in the comfort of your own home, and for much less money than Bark Stop. Granted, they may not look as sleek as Bark Stop, but they might work just as well, while saving more of your hard-earned money.

What Are Bark Stop’s Customers Saying?

Bark Stop was a very new product at the time of our research, and didn’t have any online customer reviews available.

However, Bark Stop is manufactured by Telebrands based out of Fairfield, NJ, one of the largest companies in the “As Seen On TV” industry, and maker of popular ASOTV products such as Ankle Genie, Grassology, Pocket Hose Ultra, and many more.

Among 270 HighYa reader reviews for these products (as of 4/6/15), they held an average rating of 1.5 stars, with common complaints citing poor quality products that didn’t work as advertised, as well as poor customer service (difficulty processing refunds, numerous upsells during calls, etc.). Admittedly, you may not experience the same with Bark Stop, but you might want to keep this in mind.

As a company, Telebrands holds an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on more than 1,320 closed complaints, most of which reference the same concerns noted above. In fact, the BBB recently revoked Telebrands’s accreditation because of these concerns.

Bark Stop Pricing & Refund Policy

Two Bark Stops are priced at $10 plus $13.98 S&H (whoa!), and your order will also include a 5-point, easy-to-use Bark Stop Guide to a Happier Dog.

As with most Telebrands products, Bark Stop comes with a 30-day refund policy, less S&H charges. Note: This means you might spend twice as much as what you’ll receive as a refund if you decide to return your Bark Stops.

With this said, in order to request a refund, you’ll need to contact customer service at 855-668-1655.

Can Bark Stop Put an End to Your Dog’s Barking?

Chopping to the Point: Despite the manufacturer’s claim that Bark Stop doesn’t require training, the fact of the matter is that this “As Seen on TV” shake can is intended to be a training tool. In other words, you’ll need to know when to use Bark Stop in order for it to be effective, which is something that might be better left to professional dog trainers.

After all, you love your dog. And the money you spend toward a professional trainer might provide you with the peace and quiet you want, and your dog with the calmness they deserve.

However, if you decide to use this method to train your dog, searching for local shake can options (or even making one yourself) might save you a good chunk of change from the S&H charges related to Bark Stop.
