About BeActive

The BeActive Brace is a new product that claims to utilize targeted under-knee acupressure to instantly relieve your sciatica and other back-related pain, and to help you be active and to live pain-free once again. You’re here right now because most likely you’re in pain. However, the main question here is whether or not a single pressure point can effectively relieve sciatica or other back-related pain, or if it actually requires several pressure points.

We’ll answer this question in the next section, as well as whether or not BeActive Brace’s manufacturer is simply trying to take advantage of your pain, or if it actually work as well as it claims. For now, it seems that most HighYa readers have been displeased with their experiences, which we’ll also discuss in a moment.

But first, in order to address all of your questions, let’s take a look at what sciatica is, how the BeActive Brace claims to help, and if it’s any different than other braces you may have tried in the past. Then, we’ll see how well these claims hold up against real life science.

What is Sciatica & How Does BeActive Brace Claim to Help?

As we mentioned in our article Winning the Battle Against Sciatica & Chronic Back Pain, sciatica is a condition that’s typically caused by a displaced disc in your spine, which puts pressure on your sciatic nerve. This is the longest nerve in your body, which radiates from your lower back down through your buttocks and legs. Once this occurs, you may experience moderate to severe pain, tingling, numbness, and inflammation in your back or legs.

With this in mind, the BeActive Brace claims to help instantly relieve sciatica pain by applying acupressure just below your knee, which then radiates up your sciatic nerve into your back. BeActive Brace’s manufacturer claims that the device works regardless of your level of pain, and that it’s discreet enough to be worn under your clothing, yet comfortable enough for all-day wear; even when sleeping. And you can receive all of this for just $35.89 for the standard version, and $55.89 for the Premium version. (Important note: The BeActive Brace is also currently sold at Target for $14.99.)

However, it’s important to keep in mind that there is currently no clinical evidence showing that acupressure on your calf can have any measurable effect on sciatica-related pain. Because of this (as well as several other important reasons), it appears that HighYa readers have given the BeActive Brace an overall rating of 2 stars. Let’s take a close look at their main concerns.

HighYa Readers Chime in on the BeActive Brace

Since writing our original review, more than 130 HighYa readers have taken the time to write a review about the product, which overall, seems to have a less-than-stellar rating. But why? Here are the 3 main reasons:

The BeActive Brace Doesn’t Work As Advertised (Or at All)

As we mentioned above, there is no evidence that below-the-knee acupressure can relieve sciatica, primarily because the pain generates from a compressed disc in your lower back—not your leg. As such, the number one customer complaint for the BeActive Brace is that it doesn’t work to relieve pain. In fact, one HighYa reviewer claimed that it actually made their pain worse. On top of this, the directions included with the BeActive Brace appear to be vague, and to not provide adequate information on correct positioning.

One reviewer even took the BeActive Brace to their physician, who proceeded to call it a scam, and mentioned that “there's no science in the manufacturing of them, just like those magnetic bracelets claimed to cure pain.” To support this assertion, according to a chiropractor consulted during our research, one single pressure point won’t clear up sciatica. In fact, while acupressure has been shown to help some individuals achieve relief from their sciatica, the process entails repeated movements over several areas of the body—not just one point of pressure, and not below the knee.

Ordering Process

Several HighYa reviewers claimed that their BeActive Brace orders totaled twice (or more) the original amount, which is primarily due to confusion on the website’s ordering screen. As such, keep in mind that when you place an order for 1 set, this means you’ll be receiving 2 braces. So, if you want 2 braces and order 2 sets, this actually means you’ll receive a total of 4 BeActive Braces.

Other reader complaints revolve around high shipping and handling fees (a common trait among many “As Seen on TV” products), as well as long shipping times, often lasting 6 weeks or more. We’ll talk more about this in the Bottom Line section.

Poor Customer Service

Finally, based on HighYa reviewer feedback, another common complaint revolves around poor customer service. This includes difficulty placing orders over the phone, difficulty reaching a live person (e.g. very long hold times and only automated systems)—and when you do, the staff appears to be rude and unresponsive to questions—frequent hang ups during calls, and invalid customer service emails.

Should You Purchase the BeActive Brace for Your Sciatica?

However bad your sciatica pain may be, the good news is that it’s often a temporary condition, and will generally resolve itself within a matter of days or weeks, which can be improved further by undergoing core-strengthening exercises. In fact, just being active (no pun intended) in general will help speed up your recovery, as recommended by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke: “Exercise may be the most effective way to speed recovery from low back pain and help strengthen back and abdominal muscles. Maintaining and building muscle strength is particularly important for persons with skeletal irregularities. Doctors and physical therapists can provide a list of gentle exercises that help keep muscles moving and speed the recovery process.” The NINDS also recommends hot and cold compresses, no more than 1-2 days of bed rest (any more than this can actually make the situation worse), and over the counter pain medications such as ibuprofen. Spine-Health.com endorses many of these same treatments as well.

However, if core-strengthening exercises don’t work, your next option will likely be physical therapy. From there, should your sciatica pain continue, your doctor may recommend surgery, depending on your specific condition.

But what if you suffer from ongoing sciatica or other types of chronic back pain, and want to avoid surgery? Should you give the BeActive Brace a try? Considering the lack of clinical evidence showing its efficacy, as well as hundreds of complaints of it not working as advertised and of poor customer service, you’ll definitely want to speak with your physician about more effective methods of getting rid of you sciatica and other back-related pain.

However, if you do decide to buy the BeActive Brace, keep in mind that it’s available at several local retailers, such as Target and Bed Bath & Beyond. This way, you’ll be able to find out whether or not BeActive Brace works for you, while avoiding high shipping and handling charges and poor customer service.

Bottom line: Will the BeActive Brace provide you with pain relief?

If you’ve tried braces similar to BeActive in the past without any pain relief, there doesn’t appear to be anything special about the product that would lead us to believe it would work as an alternative. Instead, consult with your physician about exercises and other natural methods that can be used to improve pain associated with your sciatica.

Brace is Awesome. Just go to Bed Bath and Beyond!

    • ATL,
    • Sep 13, 2014

People.... I read the reviews and saw the issues with buying this over the phone or online. I looked at Bed Bath and Beyond. I just went and picked it up. The product is amazing! I have had lower back issues for a few months now. Within 15 minutes of wearing the brace, it has gone away. Go to bed Bath and Beyond. They have a great return policy. Try it out. If it doesn't work then return it. You can also buy one brace you don't have to buy 2 or 4.

Chronic left side back pain with sciatica

    • Kuna ID,
    • Sep 27, 2014

I have suffered with Chronic left side back pain with sciatica for several years, I have done the pain pill thing, had injections in my back and most recently had some decompressions and laser treatments which my insurance would not pay a dime, yes, I felt so desperate for relief, my husband saw the ad for Be Active Brace and ordered it for me, when I wore it for the first time I had a lot of running around to do and I could believe how much relief I felt, I have told everyone I know about this. Funny I sound like a commercial. It was inexpensive, worth giving it a try.

BeActive Allows me to be active again

    • Bruce, WI,
    • Jul 7, 2015

I have had severe pain in my back and leg for over 6 years now. I have been to physical therapy three times and no relief. Doctors won't do surgery due to my heart. I purchased 2 braces from the company. It did take six weeks to get it, but the relief I have gotten from it was well worth the wait. I can take those nightly walks with my husband again. I will continue to buy the brace if I need more.

    Pleased with BeActive

    • Vero beach, FL,
    • Jul 7, 2015

I have arthritis very badly in my left knee. During this month of September, there has been so much rain that my knee usually hurts daily with no relief. It also has fluid around the knee cap, which causes more pain. Only cold compresses or ultrasound helps that out. I had seen the commercial once or twice, ordered my set, then forgot about them. I didn't see the commercial anymore and didn't remember I ordered them. When I got them, I took awhile for me to figure what it was.

However, once that was settled, I put one on and the pain in my knee practically disappeared. It was so intense, that I couldn't walk or do exercise of any kind. I have been wearing the BeActive daily for 5 days now and even with the rainy weather, there is not as much pain as before. I don't sleep with it on, but I read that you could, the instructions so not to. I don't have any back pain to speak of, not sciatica.

I didn't realize this wasn't for knees but it works for my knee. Thank you BeActive.

    Wonderful relief.

    • Baltimore, MD,
    • Jul 7, 2015

We read about the BeActice brace in a local publication. My husband has been having terrible lower back pain and leg pain for years. He has tried everything from chiropractors, physical therapy, and of course pain pills. This works like a charm. He walks for exercise an hour a day and has found great relief. He also performs and must stand for hours, and when he wears the brace he is practically pain free. I have told my friends and relatives about it, and they will be buying it.

    It works.

    • Cincinnati, OH,
    • Jul 7, 2015

I just purchased the BeActive Brace and I felt immediate relief, but still had pain, for my lower back pain. My pain is just muscle pain in the middle of my lower back. It used to hurt just to tie my shoes. I now have no pain in my lower back. It took about two hours on each leg because the package says do not use on both legs at the same time. I woke up today and work on concrete on my feet all day and I felt better than I ever have with this brace on. The only negative reviews I am seeing are people that ordered from the website/customer service or someone who has a debilitating condition. As far as the actual brace goes it works.

    Love it, Love it.

    • Pittsburgh, PA,

I was given this by a relative and I love it. A lot of the reviews were about poor customer service and since it was a gift I didn't experience that. I admit it seems like quackery and I was very skeptical but it works for me. I've had pain for 10 years plus. Give it a try, it's twenty bucks.

Works for me! Works for my friend!

    • Las Vegas, NV,

I had no problem with ordering online & received both wraps within two weeks. I put it on as instructed and within minutes my sciatica pain went away. I introduced the wrap to a friend that also has excruciating back problems. We both bowl on the same league but different teams. Two weeks ago he was not going to bowl because he was experiencing pain in his back. I gave him my extra wrap and he wore it during league play. At the end of the first game I heard clapping and cheering. He bowled a perfect 300! He came to me and said if it wasn't for that wrap, he would never had made it pass 150.

    Awesome product

    • Virginia,
    • Oct 16, 2014

I have been in pain 20 years due to nerve issues. That's 20 years of doctors and them wanting to drug me up. No thanks! I was about to go to Johns Hopkins then I saw this ad. I just couldn't bear the pain any longer. So having nothing to lose I ordered two. Let me tell you, I don't know what's in this thing or how it works. But I tell you, it does work. I have not woken up from sleep in three nights out of 20 years!

I couldn't sit or lay down or walk without pain before I tried this, and now I can work without so much agony and with some rest! People, you cannot go wrong with this! And to who ever you are that figured this out, thanks!

    Works great for my friend

    • Colorado Springs, CO,
    • Jul 7, 2015

My friend is in his 70's and has been experiencing sciatic pain recently. He and his wife love to walk around their neighborhood, but recently the pain has been too much. He bought the BeActive brace and it helped him instantly. He has been using it for several weeks with consistent results, however, he let a younger friend of mine try it and it didn't seem to help her at all. I guess it depends on the person. I think it's worth a try.
