Billed fraudulently - STAY AWAY!

By Megan J., Virginia, Verified Reviewer

Watch out for this company! Fraud alert, billing for services not rendered! Be careful! Do not to give them your billing information, even if you never contract for any services, because you will be billed. I discovered too late that I had been being billed random different amounts, sometimes once a month and sometimes more, over a period of over six months, even though I never once actually used their services.

I called to complain, canceled my account and told them I wanted a refund. No surprise, the person who was supposed to get back to me never did, and nothing was ever refunded. I called again with similar results. I reported them to the credit card which had been billed, but it is unlikely I will ever be compensated for any of my losses because I did supply my credit card information. For some reason, once one does this, it doesn't matter what they do or do not provide - legally, they get away with pretending they provided a service and demanding payment. Again, STAY AWAY from this company! They should be rotting in cells somewhere. Grrr! Sorry. Just don't let it happen to you, and at least I will feel something I've done about it benefited someone. Thanks for letting me say my piece, and good luck.

Service really helped me during a hard time in my life. Saved money!

By Amber C., California, Verified Reviewer

I was struggling with some anxiety-driven issues and was jumping through hoops trying to get insurance-covered counseling. After struggling to find an approved counselor and time off work, I tried BetterHelp. It was WAY cheaper than even my co-pay, and I didn't have to take time off work. I also felt the quality of the counselor was much better. I really like this service.

Excellent Service!

By Marsha, Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I was a bit skeptical of an online counseling service but I knew I needed help and where I live, there are not many options so it was super happy when I was matched with Nicole! You answer some very short super easy questions and they match you with a counselor who is knowledgeable in that area.

I have never had counseling before and had zero idea what to expect but she is awesome. Just one session with her made a huge difference! I plan to continue for a while because I think I have a lot to really work out in my head. Being able to just talk to her and her provide awesome easy solutions is huge to me. Thank you for providing an awesome service!

I read a few reviews before committing and people were saying they were being charged, etc. One review I read hit the issue “People are not reading what they are agreeing to.”

You can not expect a good service and a real service for free. These people are professionals and went to school for this education and deserve to be paid for their time and service.

You get 7 days free so that you can make sure it's for you and then you do pre-pay for 4 weeks at a time as a default but you can adjust this in your account and can cancel at any time.

They also explain this to you your 1st live session. They do live sessions either through video, phone or messages. I have done 2 sessions via the phone and I really like it.

The counselor does not know your number. The system calls you and connects you to them so no long distance for you. I so far think it's an awesome system and am very thankful. If you live in areas with very little sources of help or embarrassed to "go to" a counselor then this is an awesome option!

Terrible experience

By Katelyn L., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I started BetterHelp. I was on it for 4 days before I decided to cancel. The reason for canceling was because my counselor wasn't counseling. She didn't offer to set up a time within the week to chat or even ask how I would prefer to chat. She said, "tell me whats' going on." I did. She said, "Thanks for sending, I will reply once I've processed the information." She then sent me a worksheet, which I did. She sent me a sheet to read. That was it. She never responded to my issues like she said she would.

So after 4 days I decided to quit. I received no counseling. I reached out to BetterHelp to cancel and pay for 4 days of "service," and they said they'd have to charge me for the week and I could use it for another 3 days. I explained I was not liking my counselor. Why would I want more worksheets from her? They never responded back, they ignored me. A waste of $65. I feel duped and cheated. Terrible service.

Useless

By Cate A., Pittsburgh, PA, Verified Reviewer

This service was a waste of time. I was matched with a therapist and after 2 weeks of trying to find a mutual time to talk and then establishing an appointment, she canceled the day before. I was then matched with a second therapist who similarly canceled two appointments. The last time we were supposed to talk, I emailed him 15 minutes before the start time to confirm and he emailed me 30 minutes after the start time, with no apology or even acknowledgment of being late. I wrote lengthy emails to both therapists and they only replied saying that we should talk. So, I paid $45 a week for 3 months for 1 30-minute phone call. Totally not worth it.

Horrible, don’t waste your money!

By Natalie D., San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

This company lacks transparency in the fees it charges clients and treats their therapists poorly. Their support staff is there to ignore people at best, and if you get a response, they are unhelpful and rude. Don’t waste your time or money!

Not so good

By S K., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I filled out everything and I was completely honest. The entire idea of my application, was yes, I did need help and I have a terrible state of mind when it comes to anything, (to be honest). Using BetterHelp, I hoped I could finally talk to someone about how I feel and what I'm going through but once they emailed me and told me "BetterHelp will not help you," I felt more hopeless than in the start. It kind of broke my heart, to be honest.

Extremely disappointed

By Jerry B., Salem, WI, Verified Reviewer

I am currently on a free trial. I scheduled an appointment with my assigned counselor for 9:00 am. At 9:01 I sent a message to my counselor as I did not receive a call and got no reply. The appointment has now expired, and my assigned counselor appears to be unavailable until next week after the trial period ends. I am extremely disappointed.

Don't touch this organization!

By Vee B., United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

My so-called counselor made a mistake over my package and even though BetterHelp admitted to this they still charged me. After a lot of wasted days, I eventually received a few unhelpful text messages and a standard print out that I could have obtained for free on the internet. A complete waste of nearly £150.

DO NOT GO NEAR THIS COMPANY!

Tried 4 counselors over a month and gave up

By Pierre G., Oakland, CA, Verified Reviewer

Two of my "matched" counselors ended up becoming relatively non-responsive (i.e. 24+ hour response time), and unable to communicate with me efficiently enough to set up new video chat appointments after the first call. One or two of the other counselors who had marked on their profiles that they had video chat availability ended up writing to me that they were not offering video chat services. The video chat service, in my opinion, is one of the most valuable services offered through BetterHelp. That I could not obtain reliable access to that service, after having paid for a month-long subscription and attempting contact through several counselors, reflects badly on the service. BetterHelp offered to give me another free week after I sent them a message about my issues, but since I had easily lost two weeks' worth of support due to my issues, I did not find the compensation adequate enough for my needs or ability to trust the service. So, I quit.

By Claire R., British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

They take $300, and you get no service. The fee is just to join whether you get counseling or none, you will still pay. Unable to sign the consent form. If you need to look for someone in person at least you will get something for your money.

Pointless therapy

By Jon S., Michigan, Verified Reviewer

Just yet more pointless "therapy". I wasn't challenged or questioned to find out more about what's wrong. Therapists are supposed to do more than just sit there and listen to a patient vent. Ask the right questions and find out what's wrong with me.

Oh, and homework? Seriously?

Love the service

By Jen, Orlando, FL, Verified Reviewer

I really love the service and my Dr. has been amazing. I would highly recommend these services to anyone and appreciate that this service is available and offers so much flexibility. I reached out to other services before deciding on BetterHelp and the wait time seemed to be forever, and the concerns of insurance and payment were very impersonal. With BetterHelp, I felt I got the immediate need to talk to someone out, and I felt heard. I feel I have a path and Dr that is going to get me back to a healthy, happy and balanced life goal. Thank you BetterHelp!

For all the complainers

By Sarah Elizabeth Johnson, Verified Reviewer

Obviously, you didn't read thoroughly. I understood from the first moment I visited the site that I would be billed weekly, and that on the first month they would charge a lump sum. I hate when bad reviews that were written by ignorant people affect how people judge a product. You have to read with your eyes open.

BetterHelp works for me

By Sierra Garrett, Martinez, CA, Verified Reviewer

I've been told most of my life that I need to see a therapist to deal with my underlying family issues. As my physical and mental health grew worse and worse, I started to think about therapy seriously. But I have always been closed off to people, especially strangers but even to close friends, so I didn't think therapy would work for me.

Then I found BetterHelp. Since the therapist is communicating with you over chat messaging, I didn't feel like I was being forced to bare my soul to a stranger. I'm not being forced at all, in fact. I can message my therapist any time I feel like it from my phone and say as much or as little as I want and she gets back to me quickly throughout the day. It's like sending a text message to someone to vent about your day or the problem you're dealing with, and knowing that someone is listening to you and doesn't judge you for saying that or doing that.

Because most of the communication is done over chat, it can feel impersonal to some people, but I find it relieving. Since I'm not looking a person in the face, and they aren't staring at me watching for my body language, I can be a bit more honest with them and myself. It's impersonal, so there are no consequences to what you say or do.

Every week I have a "live session" with my therapist where we can either talk on the phone or video chat. Since I like not having to talk to someone face-to-face, I opt for the phone call. It's very discreet, the therapist calls you through BetterHelp, so they never see your actual phone number. During the live session, my therapist asks questions about messages I've sent her over the week and digs a little deeper into why I act the way I do in various situations. It is still a little uncomfortable for me to talk to someone about my issues, even over the phone, but it is helpful to get immediate feedback on my thoughts and nice to receive validation. I'm beginning to open up to my therapist more and rely on these live sessions.

The first therapist I was matched with was very obviously not going to help me, so I opted to switch therapists before canceling my subscription. Yes, you have to pay for the service up front and there's no trial period, but that makes sense because when do you get to try out a therapist for free anyways? It was very easy to switch therapists. They gave me a list of potential matches and I chose the one that I felt would be able to handle my situation best. I'm very glad I did choose her because she has been very supportive, understanding, and creative in her suggestions on how I can deal with things.

I think BetterHelp is very effective for me and is starting to get me comfortable with the idea of seeing a therapist in-person. My friend who likes the personal nature of therapy doesn't think she'd like it, but for those people, there's always video chat live sessions. I think having easy access to tell your therapist how you feel at any given moment throughout the day is extremely helpful and I appreciate it a lot. I think BetterHelp works for me at this stage in my life and can work for most people if they give it a chance.

Efficient and inexpensive

By Brooke Bartolitius, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I was skeptical about this service at first. My counselor replies very quickly to messages. It is extremely valuable to be able to send your counselor a message at any time. Rather than waiting for your next office visit and then having to try and remember everything on the spot. That in itself is stressful!

It seemed expensive to me at first. Then I thought back to counseling in office, and it was $90.00 for one hour. I would frequently forget what I was hoping to resolve under the pressure of a time limit.

Overall I don't think I have a negative thing to say about this service so far.

Useless!

By Denise A., Framingham, MA, Verified Reviewer

Frankly, it was a joke. I'm grieving the loss of my brother and don't know how to cope. I tell the therapist how I feel and she says everything I feel is normal. No kidding! I need help! I responded saying that I needed ideas or tools to deal with overwhelming grief. She recommended that I write a letter to him. While writing a letter may be a good idea at some point, for now, I am overwhelmed with grief, and at the thought of writing a letter, I feel like my heart is breaking. This was like pulling teeth to get help and I don't have the energy. Useless!

I did not reach their “standards” to receive online counseling.

By Cierra M., Emporia, VA, Verified Reviewer

I signed up with BetterHelp to talk to a counselor with some things I’m going through right now. I completed the survey so they could match me with the right counselor for me and the next day I received an email from the company stating that they have determined I was not a "good candidate" for online counseling from them. I am going through a lot and need someone to talk to because I don’t trust anyone enough to talk to them. I figured I could talk to someone whom I didn’t know so they could help me through this hard time, but however, I guess I didn’t reach their "standards," so they have declined me.

I’ve been going through a hard time for quite a while and I’m trying to overcome it myself, but I figured a counselor could help speed the process. This is a site to help individuals through their mental health issues, but they didn’t accept me? I just wonder how many people out their who needed the help more than I do get declined too. It’s very sad. They should be willing to help everyone no matter the circumstances, but I guess that is not the case.

I would definitely not recommend anyone to this site. However, I cannot vouch for everyone and their experiences, but I want to share mine with this site and let you all know how they treated me. Thanks for reading, have a great day.

Amazing

By TNisha S., South Carolina, Verified Reviewer

I was never comfortable with the idea of going to see a counselor. I didn't think it would help me. But since I started working with my counselor, I see the idea of therapy in a different light. Better Help is a way to get the support you need from anywhere. From video chats, to messaging my counselor every other day, it has been a great help. I'm a busy person, and I don't have much time to go see someone. Video chats are a life saver, and very convenient. The counselors are there to help, they won't judge you or make you feel uncomfortable. It's a safe environment where you can be yourself and talk about anything.
