What Is BioTrust IC-5?
Featuring a blend of just five synergistic ingredients, the BioTrust IC-5 2.0 supplement promises to promote increased insulin sensitivity and optimize carbohydrate management.
By taking two capsules with your two largest carb-containing meals of the day, BioTrust claims IC-5 can also enhance muscular recovery and support fat loss “in seconds” by partitioning carbohydrates to muscle tissue instead of fat cells.
With continued use, IC-5 should deliver increased energy and less hunger within the first few days, with visual results within 30 days. Depending on the quantity you purchase, BioTrust tells us that IC-5 could help you lose 30+ pounds!
Like all BioTrust supplements, IC-5 promises to deliver a quality, science-backed formula based on peer-reviewed research, containing the scientific level of each ingredient.
Their products are also manufactured in a certified GMP facility, verified as pure and potent through 3rd-party testing, and contain no sugar, artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors.
Based on how IC-5’s website reads, it might be easy to conclude that it’s targeted toward prediabetics (or even diabetics). But is this the case?
Even if it’s not, can otherwise healthy individuals expect the supplement to help manage carbohydrates and support blood sugar levels? Is it anything unique? Will it provide a solid value for the money?
You're here for some answers regarding BioTrust IC-5, and that's exactly what we’ll help provide.
The Link Between Carbohydrates, Blood Sugar, & Insulin
You just want to know if BioTrust IC-5 will deliver on its promises, so what’s up with the science lesson? We promise not to bore you to tears here, but a little background knowledge can go a long way toward addressing the supplement’s claims.
There are three main macronutrients that make up the basic components of any diet. As a result, it’s important to balance these macros if you’re looking to lose (or maintain) weight:
Protein - A key component of muscle building and maintenance, protein (and the enzymes they’re broken down into by the body) is found in high concentrations in meat and dairy. 4 calories per gram.
Fats - While it’s calorie-dense (9g calories per gram), fats aid in important bodily processes like hormone production, nerve insulation, and the health of skin and hair. Omega-6 and Omega-6 fats can be beneficial to your health, while trans fats should be avoided.
Carbohydrates - Carbs aren’t essential like the other two macros, but they act as a great source of energy, since they’re quickly broken down into sugars. Common examples of carbohydrates include sweeteners, candies, cereals, cookies and cakes, and bread.
What’s Up With Carbohydrates & Muscles?
Here’s where BioTrust designed IC-5 to really help:
Before they’re broken down into sugars, though, the glucose contained in carbohydrates floats around in the blood. Taking a measurement of this is known as a blood glucose reading.
It’s only when a hormone called insulin, which is secreted by the pancreas, signals glucose receptors to come to the surface of the cell, that it can pass through cell walls and transform into sugars.
When it’s floating around in the blood, some glucose is immediately attached to insulin and processed by the cell. On the other hand, some is stored in muscle or liver in the form of glycogen for later use.
So, instead of being immediately processed by the body, IC-5 promises to help your body store glucose.
Health Concerns Related to Carbohydrates
If the human body is repeatedly exposed to too many carbohydrates and the accompanying elevation in blood sugar, cells can become increasingly resistant to insulin—or, what the IC-5 website calls “carbohydrate tolerance.”
As a result, they can’t process glucose, which spikes in the blood and can lead to a condition known as prediabetes, which is the stage right before type 2 diabetes. Adhering to a healthy diet and getting enough exercise can often effectively address prediabetes.
Type 1 diabetes, on the other hand, often requires that patients inject themselves with insulin in order to allow the body to process sugars. In general, here are the different blood sugar readings by category:
- Normal = Blood sugar is less than 100
- Prediabetes = Blood sugar is 100-125
- Diabetes = Blood sugar is 126+
Important note: You might have noticed that IC-5 only promises to “support healthy blood sugar levels already within normal range.” In other words, it’s not intended to bring you back to normal levels if you already have prediabetes or diabetes.
But will any of its ingredients help otherwise healthy individuals accomplish this?
How Effective Are IC-5’s Ingredients?
Based on the label shown on BioTrust’s website, IC-5 contains the following ingredients:
- Chromium (as chromium dinicocysteinate [Zychrome]) 200mcg
- Berberine (from Berberis aristata root extract) 500mg
- 25:1 Cinnamon bark extract (Cinnamomum cassia) (30% polyphenols)
- Benfotiamine 80mg
- Naringin (from citrus fruit) 50mg
According to authoritative websites like WebMD and Examine.com, chromium is listed as possibly effective for lowering fasting blood sugar and insulin levels. And if you currently suffer from type 2 diabetes, it might help decrease weight gain and fat accumulation.
The recommended chromium dose is 200-1,000mcg per day, although there is some evidence that higher doses lead to more pronounced results. At 200mg per dose, IC-5 is on the lower end of this spectrum.
Niacin may help prevent type 1 diabetes in high-risk children, as well as slow the progression of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. L-cysteine may help reduce high levels of blood fat, although the clinical evidence for its blood sugar-related benefits seems limited.
1,500mg daily of berberine may also help reduce blood sugar in people with diabetes, and there is some clinical evidence that benfotiamine, a derivative of thiamin (vitamin B1), can help do the same.
Regarding cinnamon, there is some conflicting information between the authoritative sites WebMD and Examine.com. The former only lists the ingredient as possibly effective for addressing premature ejaculation, while the latter notes that it may help avoid insulin spikes, aid insulin function, reduce blood glucose levels, and work as an insulin mimetic.
In addition to what’s listed on authoritative websites, we spoke with Tim Skwiat, BioTrust’s Director of Nutrition and Exercise, who published a list of 36 clinical citations related to IC-5’s ingredients on the company’s online forum.
He also pointed us to PubMed’s list for research into cinnamon’s positive effects on blood glucose.
Finally, naringin is a chemical commonly found in citrus fruits that is thought to help improve absorption of other ingredients, although supplementation might not provide any other health benefits.
Will You Experience Any Side Effects From IC-5’s Ingredients?
With only five ingredients, you probably won’t have to worry about much more than mild digestive upset with IC-5.
However, according to IC-5’s label, the supplement is manufactured in a facility that also processes milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, and soy. Keep this in mind if you’re allergic to any of these substances.
The company also specifically warns: “Do not use this product if you are at risk or being treated for diabetes. Do not take IC-5 if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.”
WebMD tells us that chromium causes skin irritation, headaches, mood changes, and impaired thinking in some people and that l-cysteine can lead to rashes, fever, low blood pressure, and liver problems.
Side effects or not, how much does a bottle of IC-5 cost?
How Much Will You Pay for BioTrust IC-5?
- 1 bottle (60 capsules) - $69
- 3 Bottles - $192
- 6 Bottles - $354
The company makes a point to note that there’s no autoship enrollment with your purchase and that every order comes with a free copy of The 3 Week Diet and 53 Fat Burning Smoothies special reports.
Like all BioTrust supplements, IC-5 comes with a one-year money-back and exchange guarantee, less S&H, even if empty. Regarding this last point, according to BioTrust’s return policy:
“Used/Empty product containers may only be returned if adequate time has elapsed to consume the product as directed on the label. For example, we will not accept a six-month supply of empty product containers after only one or two months.”
To request a refund, BioTrust’s customer service department can be reached at 800-766-5086.
Given the level of clinical evidence for many of its ingredients’ diabetes-related benefits, do customers find IC-5’s price worthwhile?
Reviews for BioTrust’s Supplements
Although IC-5 was a brand new product without any customer feedback, BioTrust is a very popular supplement company who had nearly 130 HighYa reader reviews and an average rating of 3.5 stars.
Most customers seemed pleased with their results (e.g. effective weight loss, improved blood sugar), great customer service, and good taste (when applicable). On the other hand, many complaints referenced frequent upsells when ordering online, unwanted spam email, and no results.
Here, Tim Skwiat seemed to respond quickly to most complaints.
BioTrust manufactures a variety of other supplements, including popular options like Brain Bright, BellyTrim XP, Metabo379, and Low Carb. Only Brain Bright had any customer reviews on HighYa, with a 2.2-star rating and common complaints that it didn’t deliver, as well as high price.
BioTrust had an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and 17 closed complaints (as of 12/20/16), which referenced many of the same complaints noted here on HighYa.
The company is based out of Aurora, CO and was founded by Josh Bezoni and Joel Marion. Josh has pre-med and professional Nutritionist training and has authored two best-selling fitness books, while Joel has more than a decade of experience in the fitness industry after winning the Body-for-Life Transformation Challenge.
Does BioTrust IC-5 Represent Advanced Insulin Support?
If you search online for “blood sugar supplement,” “diabetes support,” or “carbohydrate supplement,” you’ll find hundreds of different supplements that promise to deliver the same glucose support as IC-5—some for a whole lot less money.
Will you get more value from IC-5’s $70 price tag than some of these less expensive options? Without any online customer reviews yet, and without testing the supplement firsthand, there’s no way to know.
Tim Skwiat addresses this by telling us that BioTrust’s formulations (including IC-5) stand out from the competition in a number of ways.
First, the company only uses the best, most effective ingredients in the amounts that research has shown to be effective. Further, he says IC-5’s berberine and cinnamon work synergistically through different mechanisms of action:
“For instance, cinnamon may reduce blood sugar by reducing the activity of carbohydrases (i.e., enzymes that break down carbs) while berberine appears to work by activating AMPK, which increases glucose uptake into muscles.”
Tim also points out that IC-5 only contains safe, research-backed ingredients:
“Other supplements in the category contain ingredients that are unproven, unstable (alpha lipoic acid), are potentially toxic (vanadyl sulfate), or inferior (e.g., non-standardized cinnamon extracts).
For instance, it’s the polyphenols (type-a polymers) in cinnamon that seem to be responsible for its beneficial effects. The use of non-standardized extracts may account for some of the inconsistency in the literature. Our cinnamon extract is standardized for polyphenols.”
Who Should Use IC-5?
With this said, since BioTrust only markets IC-5 to individuals who already have healthy blood sugar levels, it seems they’re offering a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.
When asked about this, Tim let us know that another important aspect of IC-5’s formulation is that it can help boost glycemic control; it can improve carbohydrate tolerance. In fact, he noted that currently, unpublished trial data for IC-5 supports this claim.
What does this mean for you?
Tim tells us that carbohydrate intolerance can increase the risk factor for a number of health issues, including obesity. Carbohydrate tolerance (or intolerance, as the case may be) can also impact what you’re able to eat while maintaining a weight loss regimen.
On top of this, authoritative websites indicate that most of IC-5’s ingredients might be beneficial for diabetics—so, if you don’t already have diabetes (or prediabetes), its overall value might be limited.
On the other hand, if you already have prediabetes or diabetes, it's important that you first speak with your doctor, who can then advise whether or not a supplement like IC-5 can help; and perhaps more importantly, avoid doing any harm.
If so, it’s positive that BioTrust offers a one-year guarantee on all their supplements—even if empty—and that they and they seem to have mostly positive customer feedback. The company is also eager to answer any questions, so be sure to ask before placing your order.
But the reality is that if you currently have normal blood sugar levels, preventing it is as easy as controlling your weight, getting plenty of exercise, eating a healthy diet, avoiding sugary drinks, limited red and processed meat, and drinking alcohol only in moderation.
And best of all, these options are completely free!
