BPI Sports Keto Supplements Review: Will It Help You Lose Weight?

The BPI Sports Keto lineup consists of four different dietary supplements: Keto Weight Loss, Keto Bomb, Keto Aminos, and Best Pre-workout, all of which center around key ingredients like medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and beta-hydroxybutyrate.

Together, the company advertises their supplements can help deliver essential fats to the body, support weight loss, utilize fat for fuel, promote endurance and performance, curb appetite, boost energy, and maximize lean muscle-building, while also preventing muscle breakdown.

Is this what you can realistically expect after handing over your hard-earned money? This is the central question we’ll help you quickly answer in this article, starting with the basics.

What Is Ketosis and How Does It Relate to Weight Loss?

The official definition for ketosis is: “A metabolic state characterized by raised levels of ketone bodies in the body tissues, which is typically pathological in conditions such as diabetes, or maybe the consequence of a diet that is very low in carbohydrates.”

Let’s break this down so we can have a complete understanding of the topic before moving on to discuss the claims for BOPI Sports’ Keto supplements.

Writing for EverydayHealth.com, Valencia Higuera reports there are three primary nutrients in foods that supply your body with energy, which include carbohydrates, fat, and protein.

Under normal conditions, your body will use carbohydrates as a primary source of fuel. But, if there aren’t enough present, it will switch to fat instead. And during the process of breaking this fat down at a higher rate, the body releases “an acid called ketones or ketone bodies,” whether you’re taking a supplement like BPI Sports Keto or otherwise.

She goes on to explain that achieving ketosis involves consuming no more than 20 to 50 grams of carbohydrates per day, over the course of several days (everyone’s body is a little bit different).

And if you can maintain ketosis, Valencia points out that based on a handful of clinical studies, “one benefit of the ketogenic diet is that you may lose more weight compared with other diets.”

The problem is that knocking yourself out of ketosis is as easy a consuming an excess amount of carbohydrates, at which point you’ll have to start the process all over again.

With these details in mind, which ingredients are found in BPI Sports’ Keto lineup, and are they clinically shown to maximize ketosis in any way?

Bringing All of These Ingredients Together

Mayo Medical Laboratories explains that “beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is 1 of 3 sources of ketone bodies”; the other two being acetoacetate and acetone. BHB salts, whether in the form of calcium, magnesium, or sodium—cumulatively known as exogenous ketones—are one of the primary ingredients found in many ketogenic supplements.

Compared to natural long-chain triglycerides from dietary fats, WebMD tells us that medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are “partially manmade fats” that “are generally made by processing coconut and palm kernel oils in the laboratory.”

Furthermore, because the “body uses them in a different way to other types of fats,” they “might also result in weight loss.”

Despite this news, they classify MCTs as ‘possibly ineffective’ for improving exercise performance, and as having ‘insufficient evidence’ for benefits related to muscle loss or increasing lean muscle, weight loss in obese or overweight individuals, or providing nutritional support for athletic training.

According to their summaries of the overall clinical evidence, sites like Examine.com, the Natural Medicines Database, and WebMD also report that caffeine can help promote mental alertness. Furthermore, when taken in combination with (the now illegal in the U.S.) ephedra, it’s listed as ‘possibly effective’ for promoting weight loss.

Other than this, these same sites indicate there’s insufficient clinical evidence supporting BPI Sports’ claims for the ingredients found in their Keto supplements.

Potential Side Effects Related BPI Sports’ Keto Dietary Supplements

The BPI Sports website emphasizes their Keto supplements aren’t intended for use by those under 18 years of age, those who are pregnant or nursing, or those who are within two weeks of undergoing surgery.

As we frequently note as well, they also point out you’ll want to “get the consent of a licensed physician before using this product, especially if you are taking medication, [or] have a medical condition. Do not take this product close to bedtime.”

Along these same lines, they also point out that, since some of the products in the Keto lineup have as much caffeine as two cups of coffee, it could cause restlessness, jitteriness, rapid heartbeat, and insomnia in sensitive individuals.

WebMD and Examine.com indicate that saffron (no dosages or other specifics referenced) could cause side effects like allergic reactions, digestive upset, anxiety, dizziness, and headache.

Along these same lines, that also indicate that citicoline is possibly safe when taken by mouth for up to 90 days, and that most people who take the ingredient don't experience problems. Still, (again, no dosages or specifics indicated), reported side effects include insomnia, headache, low/high blood pressure, blurred vision, or chest pains.

To reiterate, avoiding potential side effects and medication interactions could be as easy as having an in-depth conversation with your doctor, prior to placing an order for BPI Sports Keto, or any other supplement for that matter.

BPI Sports Keto Customer Reviews

Between their website, as well as third-party retailer sites like Amazon, GNC, and Vitamin Shoppe (to name just a few), BPI Sports' Keto supplements cumulatively held an average customer rating of about 3.8 stars at the time of our research.

There, compliments commonly related to ease of use, effectiveness (improved weight loss, boosted energy, etc.), great flavor (when applicable), and competitive price, while complaints often revolved around less-than-stellar results, common and temporary side effects (digestive upset, headache, etc.), and concerns with additional artificial ingredients like sucralose.

How to Choose Between BPI Sports Keto and Other Ketogenic Dietary Supplements

A simple online search for ‘ketogenic supplement’ will reveal dozens of potential options competing with BPI Sports’ Keto lineup, including several the HighYa team has written about in the past like Elevacity KetoCre, HVMN Ketone, and Julian Bakery InstaKetones. How can you choose the best option for you?

As with any other dietary supplement, we recommend that you start by understanding their claims. In other words, what do authoritative sites like WebMD, Examine.com, Drugs.com, the Mayo Clinic, and ConsumerLab (to name just a few) have to say about the clinical support for its ingredients?

If you find positive results, are the ingredients present in the same concentrations and dosages found in supporting studies?

Furthermore, what’s the purpose of the site you’re on? Is it mainly to inform, or to sell you a product? Do they make claims that sound too good to be true? Is the site’s information up to date?

Whether you’re purchasing from BPI Sports or another manufacturer, you’ll also want to make sure they offer a satisfaction guarantee, with reasonable S&H charges and no restocking fees, and come with mostly positive online customer feedback.

How does all of this line up for the BPI Sports Keto lineup?

Our Final Thoughts About BPI Sports Keto Dietary Supplements

While the four different supplements under the Keto brand seemed to come with mostly positive online customer feedback at the time of our research, BPI Sports held an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, as of 8/24/18.

Among the three consumer complaints (none of which the company had responded to), most related to refund problems and order issues.

On top of this, it’s important to reiterate that sites like WebMD and the Natural Medicines Database report insufficient clinical evidence to support most of the manufacturer’s claims for BPI Sport’s Keto supplements and that as soon as you open a bottle, refunds are no longer available.

Pulling all of these details together, we’d strongly recommend having an in-depth conversation with your doctor before placing an order for BPI Sports Keto, or any other dietary supplement. They can help you figure out which ones—if any—might deliver the most bang for your buck, based on your specific diagnosis.
