About Cover 2 Go
Cover 2 Go is an As Seen on TV hair dye that comes in a compact container, is sweat-proof and can last up to six hours.
The product is unique in that it looks like a makeup compact – it has four color compartments and a brush – but is actually a hair-dye kit that you can use in emergencies that call for a quick color solution.
Tristar Products is the company behind Cover 2 Go. Tristar is a well-known producer of As Seen on TV products. We’ve reviewed many of their items, including Copper Chef, Clear TV, and Copper Wear. Cover 2 Go is the only hair dye in their current line-up of 30 products.
In this review, we’re going to give you a quick overview of how it works, talk about how much it costs and then compare it to other quick-fix hair-dye products. At the end of our analysis, we’ll give you our thoughts on the general strengths and weakness of Cover 2 Go.
How Cover 2 Go Works
Imagine yourself interviewing for a job and you’re embarrassed about graying hair or you haven’t had a chance to go to the salon and get your roots touched-up. Cover 2 Go claims to be your solution in those situations because you can apply it to your roots, beard and other spots in a matter of seconds.
Photos and videos on the Cover 2 Go website show people using the product along their hairline, beard and graying hair.
The product’s compact has five features. First, you’ve got a two-sided brush that has a fine side and a coarse side. Second, there are four different dye colors: mustard, brick red, deep brown and black. You’ll mix these together to try and match the hair color you want. Third, there’s a lengthwise mirror that you can use to guide your brush across areas you want to color.
What’s nice about the way this product is designed is that nobody would be able to tell that your compact is actually used to dye your hair – it looks like an average makeup compact.
The product’s website provides no details on how long it takes the product to dry or how much you should put on.
As far as what’s actually in Cover 2 Go, we can’t say because the website provides no information regarding ingredients aside from one quick statement that says the product contains “no chemicals” and “no dyes.”
A Nov. 2017 article from Good Housekeeping notes that even organic beauty products can’t be chemical-free. This statement clashes with Cover 2 Go’s claim that it is chemical-free.
“Even when the packaging claims to be all-natural, organic or chemical-free — which is literally impossible because everything, including organic things, are made of chemicals — that could basically be an outright lie,” reporter Marci Robin wrote. “This is because the FDA can’t do anything about the use of these terms regarding cosmetics.”
The article goes on to note that the only truly chemical-free beauty products would be those made exclusively of henna.
Because there’s a chance that Cover 2 Go is, in fact, made from henna, we called the customer service number listed on the product’s website: 800-440-8291. We received the following message when we dialed: “The number you have dialed is not in service.”
Therefore, we could not verify if Cover 2 Go is made from henna and/or does not include chemicals or dyes. Considering the fact that a promotional video from the company notes that the coloring is good for up to six hours leads us to believe that dyes are not used, as dyes tend to last a lot longer than six hours.
Pricing and Return Policy for Cover 2 Go
A single Cover 2 Go compact will cost you $29.99 and has free shipping. If you live in Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania or Washington, you’ll have to pay sales tax. For example, one Cover to Go is $29.99 without sales tax and, in Florida, is $32.09 with sales tax.
You’ll have to provide your payment information, address and telephone number in order to finalize your payment. We mention this because you may not know that there’s a checkbox at the end of your order form that’s automatically checked.
This checkbox tells Tristar you want to receive text messages from them about product updates, marketing and offers. You can save yourself a text message or two if you uncheck this before you click “Process Order,” or you can reply with “STOP” if you leave the box checked and you want the messages to cease.
One of the keys to having accurate expectations of products like this is to know what the return policy is. If you aren’t happy with how it works, what recourse do you have?
According to Tristar, Cover 2 Go has a 60-day, money-back guarantee. The 60-day deadline starts the day you receive your item. You’ll have to pay any shipping and handling costs required to return the item. However, considering how small Cover 2 Go is, you’ll most likely pay $3.75 for first-class mail with the United States Postal Service.
Our Final Thoughts on Cover 2 Go’s Strengths, Weaknesses, and Similar Products
Our analysis of this product reveals that there are some clear pros and cons to this product. First, we believe the $29.99 price tag is a strength, as you have four different colors from which you can create a cover-up. Also, the product’s small size and convenience could be well worth what you paid for it if you’re in an emergency and need to do a crucial touch-up.
The downside of the product is that there could be a learning curve when it comes to mixing the right colors together so that you get a consistent hue each time you do a cover-up. Also, it’s hard to tell from the product’s website how long it actually lasts.
In terms of a comparison, popular beauty brand L’Oreal offers a spray bottle of root cover-up called Magic Root that costs $8.29 per bottle. While the price is about a fourth of what you’d pay for Cover 2 Go, you can’t fine-tune the color. More than 2,000 Amazon reviewers gave Magic Root an average rating of 3.7 stars.
Sephora sells a root cover-up kit from DPHUE that costs $30 dollars and employs colored pastes that you can mix together to find the right color. At the time of publishing, 30 reviewers gave the touch-up kit an average rating of 4.5 stars.
If you’re unsure of how you’ll like Cover 2 Go, you can buy it, try it and send it back if you’re unsatisfied. Be sure to call the customer service number to make sure it’s functioning, as you’ll need to speak with a company representative to process the return.
