How Does the Diabetes 60 System Address Type II Diabetes?

At the core of the Diabetes 60 System is something known as high intensity interval training, or HIT for short. These types of cardiovascular exercises basically involve brief periods of intense exercise, followed by less intense recovery periods.

And in general, HIT exercises have been shown to burn more calories, increase muscle mass, and boost cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance better than less intense activities, such as jogging or running on a treadmill.

Specifically related to type II diabetes, there is some clinical research showing that HIT can improve patients’ symptoms. Here is a small sampling:

  • A 2002 study conducted by the International Diabetes Institute, which concluded, “High-intensity progressive resistance training, in combination with moderate weight loss, was effective in improving glycemic control in older patients with type 2 diabetes.”
  • A 2011 study published by the Journal of Applied Physiology that stated, “Our findings indicate that low-volume HIT can rapidly improve glucose control and induce adaptations in skeletal muscle that are linked to improved metabolic health in patients with type 2 diabetes.”
  • A 2009 study that found, “The efficacy of a high intensity exercise protocol, involving only ~250 kcal of work each week, to substantially improve insulin action in young sedentary subjects is remarkable.”

Here’s the problem though: Although these short, intense exercises might improve your body’s ability to regulate glucose, there is zero evidence that HIT can reverse diabetes, as claimed by Dr. Shelton.

Also, as its name implies, HIT exercises can be very rigorous, which might not be ideal if you’re very overweight or have other medical conditions. And even if you don’t, as Wikipedia states, “HIIT requires "an extremely high level of subject motivation," and [they have to] question whether the general population could safely or practically tolerate the extreme nature of the exercise regimen.”

Finally, should you have enough motivation, in order to get enough exercise to produce any diabetes-related benefits, you’ll definitely have to work out for more than 60 seconds.

Just what is diabetes, anyway?

The Difference Between Type I & Type II Diabetes

Diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin (such as type II, by far the most common), or doesn’t produce any insulin at all (type I).

In either instance, your body can’t process glucose (sugar), which spikes in your bloodstream and can cause nerve damage, poor circulation (even leading to amputations), and more.

Patients with type II diabetes generally don’t require insulin, and the disease can be managed through lifestyle factors like losing weight if you’re overweight, eating a healthy diet, and getting plenty of exercise.

On the other hand, type I diabetics require insulin, or risk becoming seriously ill (even death).

Regardless of whether you suffer from type I or type II diabetes, the important thing to remember is that there is no cure. And while the lifestyle factors we talked about above can put type II into remission, it can’t be “reversed,” as claimed by Dr. Shelton.
