As Beachbody's first partner program, Double Time Workout is a 30-day fitness and nutrition program developed by Tony Horton to help you get fit, feel good, build relationships, and learn to communicate, all while having fun.

Whether you’re nine or 92, husband and wife or parent and child; or new to exercise or looking to get back on track, Beachbody indicates you’ll be able to laugh, connect, and do something together that ingrains healthy lifestyle habits.

In addition to the super simple exercises centered on cardio, resistance, and mobility (no weights needed), Double Time includes an easy-to-follow nutrition plan that provides simple recipes specifically designed to help kids enjoy healthier foods.

There’s no doubt that partnering with someone can make many things in life easier. But when it comes to improving your fitness, is Beachbody’s Double Time Workout necessarily your best choice?

Is It Better to Work Out With a Partner?

Writing for IDEA Health & Fitness Association, Len Kravitz, Ph.D. reports, “Research suggests that 50% of persons starting an exercise program will drop out within the first 6 months.” Exactly why this occurs, Dr. Kravitz tells us, involves a complex set of multi-factorial behaviors that will be different for everyone, which is why there’s no simple solution that will work universally.

However, he emphasizes that support—which could include working with a partner—is one of several important components in helping individuals stick with their regular exercise regimen. And in addition to the Double Time Workout website, it seems many other authoritative sources support this assertion:

  • WebMD: “When your inner demons order you to hit the couch instead of the treadmill, a workout partner can steer you back in the right direction. Studies show you'll also work out longer when you have a pal along.”
  • The Atlantic: “New research shows that twosomes who work out together are more likely to achieve their fitness goals than those who try to get healthy alone.”
  • Breaking Muscle: “A recent study by the Society of Behavioral Medicine took a look at the effects of training with a partner on your cardio work. They discovered that doing your aerobic work with a partner improves your results.”

So, at least from a motivational perspective, it certainly seems that working with a partner—whether your child, spouse, or a friend—really could help improve your chances of reaching success (however you define this).

Next, let’s take a closer look at exactly how the Double Time program claims to accomplish this.

Which Videos Are Included In the Double Time Workout Program?

At 35 minutes or less, each of the six cardio and strength workouts found in the Double Time program is short and sweet, which—when combined your partner’s presence—Beachbody claims will make getting in shape feel more like play and less like work.” Overall, the program is designed to last 30 days.

Keep in mind that, with the exception of Recess, all the workouts below require the use of Beachbody’s Buddy Ball, which may or may not be included depending on your ordering choice (see the Pricing section below for more information).

  • Game On! – An 18-minute workout that’s designed to increase your heart rate.
  • Dynamic Doubles – A 19-minute resistance workout designed to help build strength.
  • Double Up – Another workout that will help you torch calories over the course of 30 minutes.
  • BOD Squad – Over the course of 27 minutes, you’ll “lunge, squat, and crawl your way to a stronger bod.”
  • Funapalooza – Playful cardio moves that will make you sweat during this 30-minute session.
  • Power Partners – 32 minutes of more strength-building moves.
  • Recess – An 11-minute active recovery workout involving all play.
  • Abracadabra – A 10-minute workout that will help you and your partner “sweat and laugh your way to stronger, flatter abs.”

How Much Does the Double Time Workout Cost?

There are two ways to purchase the Double Time program:

  • DVD: $59.85, plus S&H – Includes six workouts on two DVDs, Quick Start Guide, Eating Plan (including 43 Fun Family Recipes Booklet), 30-Day Calendar, and Beachbody Buddy Ball
  • Beachbody On Demand (BOD): $99/yr – Includes two extra BOD exclusive workouts, as well as the Double Time Kids’ Rewards Calendar

If you’re already a BOD member, you can purchase the Buddy Ball by itself for $19.95.

We also found several other Double Time DVD and Beachbody On Demand packages (Shakeology, or pediatrician-approved Daily Sunshine) ranging between $160 and $180.

Whether you purchase the DVD set or sign up for a BOD membership, your order will come with a 30-day risk-free money back guarantee, less S&H charges, if applicable. New BOD members can also sign up for a free 14-day trial.

In order to request a refund or cancel a BOD trial before it rolls to an annual membership, Beachbody customer support can be reached at 800-470-7870.

What Are Customers Saying About Beachbody In Their Reviews?

On the Consumer Affairs website, 180+ customers had given Beachbody an average rating of about four stars, with common compliments referencing ease of use, visible results, and solid value. What few complaints there were tended to reference billing issues, although a company representative responded each time.

Beachbody also held an A- rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on 61 customer reviews (75 percent of which were negative) and more than 800 closed complaints, as of 11/8/17. Again, most of these revolved around billing issues, and a company rep responded in each instance with a resolution.

Who Is Tony Horton?

Tony Horton is a popular member of the Beachbody team, having created other popular programs like P90X (and the follow-up P90X3), 22 Minute Hard Corps, and 10 Minute Trainer.

In addition to his workouts, the bio on Tony’s website lists him as a motivational speaker and author of the books "Bring It," Crush It!" and “The Big Picture: 11 Laws That Will Change Your Life.”

Are There Other Partner-Based Fitness Programs Like Double Time Workout?

We didn’t encounter any other all-inclusive programs during our research that were exactly like Double Time, combining partner-based workouts (whether adults or children) with a nutrition plan, and without the need for any extra equipment.

However, searching for variations of terms like “partner fitness programs” and “partner workouts” returned dozens of results for different individual exercises, as well as complete programs—many of which were free. How can you decide whether or not Double Time is worth the money?

When choosing any new workout program, it’s important to start by speaking with your healthcare provider, who can recommend options based on your diagnosis and overall goals. From there, the Mayo Clinic recommends asking the following questions to help you narrow down your options:

What is your current fitness level? If you’re a beginner, you don’t want anything too challenging that could rob you of your motivation, or even result in an injury. But if you’re more advanced, a beginner program might be too easy and lead to this same motivation loss.

Do you have any health issues? Similarly, chronic medical conditions like arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease, as well as previous injuries, can play big roles in which programs are best, whether Double Time or a third-party option.

What are your goals? Are you looking to lose weight, increase muscle mass, boost your cardio capacity, or just get back into a habit of moving your body?

What activities do you enjoy? Fitness should be enjoyable, so why not choose a workout program centered on fun activities, such as cycling, dancing, walking, and so forth? Can you also add variety to these enjoyable activities (however you define this) to help maintain motivation?

Our Final Thoughts About the Double Time Workout

One final important consideration mentioned in the Mayo Clinic article is budget—what can you afford?

With all of this in mind, Double Time comes with a relatively inexpensive price, was created by a fitness professional with decades of experience (and host of many other popular programs), and is backed by Beachbody with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

So, if you’re a beginner looking to get involved in fitness with the help of a partner, as well as gain access to potentially helpful nutrition information, it seems like you might not have much more to lose by ordering Double Time than some of your time.

And if your main goals are to get the whole family involved in “daily exercise, learning about a balanced diet, and sharing a healthier lifestyle,” its well-rounded approach seems like it could deliver on Beachbody’s promises (although we didn’t test the program ourselves to provide firsthand feedback).
