About Emerald Vision

Emerald Vision is a pair of specially designed sunglasses that can rebalance light on a gloomy day, which can enhance your mood and make you feel “brighter and more energized.”

How do they do this? Emerald Vision’s lenses remove red and blue wavelengths, while focusing on particular wavelengths of green, in order to closely mimic the color spectrum of direct sunlight.

Sound science-y? That’s because Emerald Vision’s manufacturer claims this is all “backed by real science!”

Emerald Vision eyewear provides UV protection when you’re outside, although they can also be worn inside when you need a pick me up. And they look great on men and women of all ages.

It feels terrible when you’re in a bad mood, which affects those around you. But is brightening your mood really as easy as slipping on a pair of Emerald Vision’s sunglasses?

First, let’s tackle Emerald Vision’s primary claim and find out if light really can affect mood.

Can Light Have an Impact on Your Mood?

During fall and winter months, do you find that you just don’t have the same level of energy as you do during warmer part of the year? Do you feel irritable or otherwise moody?

If so, you could be one of the 6% of the population that experiences something known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). While the medical community isn’t exactly sure what causes SAD, it’s thought that the lower light levels during colder months can cause a drop in serotonin and melatonin levels within your body, while throwing off your biological clock (otherwise known as circadian rhythm).

People suffering from SAD might feel depressed, have little interest in activities they normally find enjoyable, experience difficulty sleeping and concentrating, have a lack of energy, and more. Even within the 6% of the population who experience SAD, some might feel only minor symptoms, while it can be crippling for others.

This is why, if you find your mood changing with the amount of sunlight, it’s important that you speak with your physician about specific treatments based on your diagnosis.

Now we know that light can have a very real effect on your mood, but can specially designed sunglasses help?

Can Eyewear Like Emerald Vision Prevent Gloom-Induced Moodiness?

Emerald Vision claims that the technology behind their sunglasses is backed by science, although they don’t cite any studies to back this up.

In fact, after performing some in-depth research, there doesn’t appear to be any direct link to wearing sunglasses like Emerald Vision and decreased SAD symptoms. There is however, evidence showing that you shouldn’t wear traditional sunglasses outside during low-light months, as this can reduce the effectiveness of light therapy.

Why is this? As we mentioned in the previous section, there’s a lot we don’t know about seasonal affective disorder. But there are strong indications that the disorder is caused by the level of light that enters our eyes—not necessarily the wavelength of light, as claimed by Emerald Vision’s manufacturer.

Even when we’re indoors, it’s been shown that the level (remember, not the wavelength) of light can have an immediate impact on how we feel and the decisions we make.

With this in mind, are there any effective treatments for SAD?

Effective Treatments for Seasonal Affective Disorder

Once again (not to sound like a broken record), there’s much we don’t know about SAD, but the most effective treatment is generally light therapy.

This involves exposure to artificial light using a device called a light therapy box, which mimics outdoor light. Light therapy boxes can be purchased from hundreds of retailers (both online and off), or your doctor can recommend a specific type of box based on your symptoms and diagnosis.

Light therapy boxes are relatively small and can be placed on just about any flat surface (such as a table top), which means they can be moved around with you from room to room as you’re working at your desk, or while you’re surfing the internet. All you need is to do is sit in front of the box for about 30 minutes per day.

There are even light therapy glasses that can be worn while you’re cooking, cleaning, working out, or otherwise moving around.

Since SAD is a form of depression, your physician might also recommend antidepressants (along with psychotherapy), which can help you find relief if your symptoms have a greater impact on your daily life.

Additionally, you can make your living space brighter and more cheerful, get outside as often as you can (even if you think you don’t have the energy), and exercise regularly.

These last few options are free, but how much will it cost you to try out Emerald Vision eyewear?

How Much Does Emerald Vision Cost?

One pair of Emerald Vision sunglasses is priced at $20 and includes free shipping.

Like all Telebrands products, Emerald Vision comes with a 60-day refund policy, less S&H charges.

Note: The Emerald Vision commercial claims there is a 60-day refund policy, while the website indicates 30. We contacted customer service to clarify, who confirmed that it is, in fact, 60 days. This (along with the free S&H) is certainly a departure from the norm for an ASOTV product.

In order to request a refund, you’ll need to contact Telebrands customer service at 855-668-1655.

Although this might be a decent price, are there any other options out there similar to Emerald Vision?

Other SAD Eyewear

In short, no; there’s nothing out there that makes the exact same claims as Emerald Vision. As we mentioned previously, there is a variety of eyewear that uses light therapy, but nothing with the same red and blue wavelength-removing lenses as Emerald Vision.

Our opinion? Emerald Vision’s manufacturer does a good job of making their lenses seem revolutionary, but we think they’re probably just slightly modified versions of products that already exist, like Night View NV Glasses and HD Vision Ultras.

You’ll notice that these feature a very similar design, and even similar lens colors, although they’re marketed for completely different purposes.

Will Emerald Vision Give You Relief from Seasonal Depression?

Since there’s so much we don’t know about the seasonal affective disorder, it’s technically possible that Emerald Vision (or any other “brightening” eyewear) could help you find some relief.

Do we think it’s probable though? Based on the complete lack of evidence, likely not. And as we’ve already discussed, the color of light doesn’t have any impact on your mood—only the intensity—so this directly contradicts the claims made by Emerald Vision’s manufacturer.

Still feel like giving Emerald Vision eyewear a try? If so, we might recommend browsing a local big box retailer or sporting goods store for similarly colored lenses. This can help you decide if these glasses can help treat your SAD, without having to worry about sending them back to the company (and paying for shipping) if they don’t work out.

Alternately, you can apply this money toward a visit with your doctor or an inexpensive light therapy box, both of which will likely offer much more value for your money than Emerald Vision.
