FarmersOnly.com Review: Is It Right for You? An In-Depth Look

By Lydia Noyes

Updated on: Jun 25, 2020

FarmersOnly is an online dating site for those who love the country. The website targets those who farm or enjoy the farming lifestyle by giving them a platform to connect over that shared interest.

Founded in 2005, FarmersOnly.com® claims to solve the problem of trying to date when you live in a small town and know all your neighbors a little too well.

In this review, we’ll analyze what this platform offers to help you determine if it is the right option for you.

How Does FarmersOnly Work?

When you make an account on FarmersOnly, you start filling out your profile with a brief bio and then answer questions about your lifestyle, including your ethnicity, religious beliefs, drinking or smoking habits, educational level, whether you have children, and more.

You’ll then share information about what you’re looking for in a match, such as height, weight, and age preferences, as well as what kind of relationship you are looking for (casual, friendship, or long term).

FarmersOnly won’t display your real name. Instead, your username will be something like “Cowboy” or “Farmgirl,” followed by a string of numbers. People with premium accounts can modify their nickname, but they still can’t share a real name.

It’s possible to search members on the site based on a preferred age range, their distance from you, or whether they have profile pictures.

Flirting and favoriting accounts are free, but you’ll need to pay for a subscription to read the flirts sent to you.

Flirt options include several dozen pre-written phrases, including “My computer dared me to send you a flirt,” “Wishing you a HAPPY Harvest,” “Will you be my Spring Fling?” and more.

You can use the discover feature to browse suggested accounts by picture only and indicate whether you are interested or not by selecting a ‘thumbs up’ or a ‘thumbs down’. Only members who you thumbed up will get a message about your interest.

The number of active online users on FarmersOnly ranged from 15,00–17,000 while I used the site. Users are located across the United States, and about 10% of the membership base is located in Canada.

Today, FarmersOnly’s total membership is around 4.5 million users, and the company claims that they produce more than 100 marriages each year.

Premium Membership Pricing and Features

If you want to send and receive personal messages from other FarmersOnly members, then you will need to commit to a premium membership.

The cost per month depends on how many months you commit to:

  • 1-month membership: $21.95
  • 3-month membership: $13.32/month ($39.96 total)
  • 6-month membership: $10.99/month ($65.94 total)

Signing up for premium membership enrolls you in a recurring subscription until you cancel your account. You can cancel future subscription renewals at any time through the “Manage Your Subscription” option in account settings.

For an additional $9.99 per month, you can upgrade your account to “Gold Status,” meaning that your messages will be highlighted in gold in other member’s inboxes, and even free members will be able to read and respond to them.

Another premium feature is FarmPhone, which lets you send and receive FarmersOnly messages as text messages on your phone while keeping your number private from other members. Other members don’t need to have this feature for it to work for you. This costs an additional $4.95 per month.

Analysis of Customer Reviews

Popular Alternatives to FarmersOnly

There aren’t many dating websites tailored specifically towards rural people, but many people are still likely to have luck on more mainstream dating platforms like Zoosk, Elite Singles, and Match.com.

  • iOS: 3.8 (7,000 reviews)

Zoosk dwarfs the other dating profiles by membership size. There are close to ten times as many active users on the platform as FarmersOnly, which means that you’re likely to find a few people nearby that spark your interest.

Zoosk also utilizes a coin system, which means that the site offers lots of additional items for you to purchase to get attention from other users. This can bring your monthly costs up significantly compared to the base monthly price.

Like FarmersOnly, Elite Singles is a niche site that’s targeted towards older, educated adults who are searching for serious relationships. In both cases, these sites don’t regulate who signs up. You could be a high school dropout on Elite Singles or a nature-adverse city dweller on FarmersOnly.

However, in my experience, most FarmersOnly members seem to indicate some interest in farming, animals, or the outdoors in their profiles.

Lastly, FarmersOnly doesn’t include any sort of matching algorithm to help you connect with others. You won’t be asked any questions about your personality or relationship style, and matches are sorted by distance as a default.

The Bottom Line

FarmersOnly is designed to help the busy, outdoorsy types find their forever matches. While the site isn’t exclusively composed of farmers, most users indicate that they have at least a general love for the lifestyle.

Compared to other dating sites, FarmersOnly has an outdated feel. Some might find that to be refreshing, as it simplifies the matchmaking process by getting rid of matching algorithms and pay-per-interaction pricing systems.

Customer reviews indicate that a lot of FarmersOnly members successfully used the site to find a long-term partner. The dating pool is smaller, but there’s a good chance that a lot of potential matches will share your interests, which might save you a lot of time sorting through members on other sites.

If you’re interested in FarmersOnly but concerned you won’t find the right people, we suggest making a free account and sending some flirt messages to people you are interested in.

You’ll get an email if they flirt with you back, so, even though you won’t be able to see the flirt, you’ll get the sense of whether they might be interested. You can then use this response rate to determine whether committing to a premium membership might be worthwhile.

Would not recommend.

By Guy F Bartlett , Florida

I am convinced that they hire "teasers". I received an email from the perfect mate just seconds after I submitted my credit card info. Since then, I have been in communication with a person who I can tell from their style of writing, grammar, and word choice, are actually two different people. They appear to work in shifts, one emails from about 10:00 pm to about 9:00 am. Then the idiot's evil twin takes over. The night shift person is always apologizing for things that the day shift person said. This person claims to be from TN but the emails come from a domain in Mountain View, CA. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Be wary.

Dangerous at best

By Heather Amadeo, San Diego, CA, Verified Reviewer

My experience with FarmersOnly was a nightmare. I met a guy on there, who initially seemed to be the man of my dreams. All women should do when meeting someone in the internet, I searched his name and other details and it turned out he was a registered sex offender due to attempted rape. Wonderful. I contacted FarmersOnly.com and let them know of the situation. I let them know I had the documentation and all the proof they needed. I got an email back three days later basically telling me that because he paid his $21.95, they won't be investigating/canceling, suspending his account. It doesn't matter what his background is. So, he has access to thousands of women every second of the day all because he paid $21.95. I canceled my subscription immediately. Sad state of affairs. I know everyone has a past but when it's documented and something such as this. I would think it would be addressed.

Farmers Only Stingy Tactics

By Katherine , Wausau, WI

I went on FarmersOnly because I am a country gal. I found that many of the men I met on FarmersOnly were more down to earth than other dating sites. After a while of dating, I let my subscription expire, because I had already reviewed many profiles and was going to be busy for a couple of months and wouldn't have time to date. Not having time is exactly why farmers join this site, to meet others, because they don't always have time throughout the year and other farmers understand that. I was waiting for a good profile to come along so I could reinstate my membership when my free time came along. FarmersOnly then made it a policy to cut off non premium members from even viewing others' profiles, unless they became a premium member. So, where is the incentive to join when I can't even read people's profiles? When I tried to just search, they needed an email, which then they prompted to open back up my account, but then that wouldn't allow me to look at profiles still. I tried clicking on the "contact us" link, but came to an error 404 page because apparently you can't contact them if you're not a member either. Huh?. I have better things to do than play with stingy dating site tactics. Plain and simple, dating sites should allow even their non members to view profiles, as incentive to join. I had enough of this crap, back to the other dating sites it is. Maybe I would have recommended it at one point, but not anymore, since they became hard to work with.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Tried twice with no lasting results.

By Sherry , Ohio

The amount of men in the search is limited mostly because they do not finish their profiles. It feels like they are trolling and do not want to commit to anything. I did have a date with a man who seemed nice. But I only received one response back and then nothing. Common manners is one huge item that is lacking. If you are not interested just have the courage to say "we are not a match". I am sincere in my search for a mate and am very discouraged with the men who are just playing games.

I will not renew my membership and will advise others who are really searching to avoid this site. I have chatted and met several men who I found out were just players trying to use women. I reported them for some of the things said and their actions and they are still on the site trolling for "prey" in women who are lonely and trusting. And many of the men are not of a farm background or presently into farming and I thought that was the common ground for the site.

You should filter your people and take the ones off who have not finished their profiles in several months because they are not serious and waste our time in searching. You could improve so many things with this site. I feel I wasted my money!

Farmer's Only: Manipulative, gimmicky, and poor customer service.

By David , Illinois

The basic premise of FarmersOnly.com is a great, but the behind-the-scenes shenanigans and poor customer service lead to an under whelming and disappointing experience. For one, both interested parties have to have paid memberships in order to do anything other than send pre-formatted "Hello, How Are You's?" That's greedy, unnecessary, and manipulative. Also, after a short grace period, all information regarding who you've "favorited," who has "favorited" you, who has sent you messages or emails, etc. is hidden.

The customer service, other than that automated process for taking your credit card information when paying for a membership, is non-existent. My messages went repeatedly unanswered, and I finally gave up.

This is unfortunate, because Farmers Only definitely fills a niche and could be providing a valuable service. However, shortsighted greed and manipulative business models get in the way of the website fulfilling its potential. Overall, a negative experience for what could be a really valuable service. It's pretty disappointing.

Negative review

By Anita ,

FarmersOnly is not a good dating site. There are not enough premium members to contact. They take funds out of your bank account or credit card without notice, even if you don't use the account. They will NOT refund your money.

Very Bad Dating Site

By Yvonne Baker , Virginia

I joined as premium member on April 10th, 2015 for a 3 month subscription. After a week, I decided it was just like all other dating sites, so I canceled my subscription. Kids said give it another try. I clicked back on my profile, and thought I was going to be able to continue.

This is when things go wrong.

When I tried to access my email, message pops up saying I was only a standard member and I had to upgrade. I continued to email this Man named Jack. He was threatening, rude, and unprofessional. He said I canceled my profile, and my account was deleted. Nothing I could do about it, that was the way things were.

Weeks later, I get an automated sounding email from Jack saying that I got my membership back. I also told Jack that they were not abiding by their terms of agreement and I was going to talk to someone about it. However, they canceled my membership again on June 5th, 2015.

According to their terms and agreements, the website was supposed to let you continue through the three months of membership, but they did not let me do that. Even if you did cancel your subscription, they were supposed to let you read emails. Do not go to this website! It is horrible and a scam in my opinion.

What a joke

By Tenley , Denver, CO

If no stars was an option, I would have chosen that.

My experience was horrible. It's a stalking website. Most profiles have either no pictures or contain pictures of farm animals/machinery and crop land. The only way to block someone is to be a paid member. The only way to see who visited your profile is to click into their profile and it becomes a vicious cycle of clicking into each others profile just to see who was a visitor.

FarmersOnly is way behind on technology of internet dating and they need to make some serious improvements.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

A complete rip off - buyer beware.

By Stacey , Nebraska

Most of there members are standard members which can't be contacted, most have not used the site in over two months, the only way to find this out is to pay their membership fees. This company encourages it's members to leave their unused profiles there so that they can "easily return" if they wish. Upon paying my dues some of the premium members profiles that can be contacted quickly vanished. This company has no morals and needs to quickly be put out of business.

By Bill Rodd , Cape Coral, FL

Bad Customer Service

By Tyler ,

Well, I enjoyed the site as a Standard Member up until I logged back in about a week ago. Really impossible to accomplish anything as a Standard Member.

Okay, well, I think I found someone I'd like to talk to, so I may as well pay for a month long Premium Membership. No way I'm paying by credit card, so I got a prepaid card to pay by phone since I would need to use two of them. Apparently now, once you call, you find out you can no longer pay by phone. Go figure! Why?

Numerous calls and emails this past week have been delivered, but I have yet to get a response. Of course I can't pay by phone since there is nobody on the other end of the line! I'll also mention that the number of grammatical errors on their FAQs page is ridiculous. I'm still waiting to find out what a "Platinum Membership" is, as found in the Gold Member section of the FAQs.

Anyway, what do I know. I'm going to keep trying, as I'm actually on there to date, but then again, that's probably just the site pulling me into their trap.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
