About Go Green Drain Opener
Go Green Drain Opener promises it’s the “eco friendly” way to unclog any drain in your house in just a matter of minutes. The makers tout that its pre-measured packages eliminate guessing, adding the ingredients won’t harm your pipes and will dissolve hair, grease, food, or paper in seconds.
Go Green is brought to you by Tristar Products, the direct marketing company responsible for the Clear TV and the Perfecter Fusion Styler, to name two. They currently have no rating from the BBB, because the BBB says Tristar is “in the process of responding to previously closed complaints” (as of July 2014, there have been 1022 in the last 3 years).
How Go Green Drain Opener Works
They don’t specifically list the ingredients of the Go Green Drain Opener, except that it’s “eco friendly” and “environmentally safe.” Note: they do not use the words “all natural,” “organic,” or “biodegradable.”
Go Green Drain Opener comes in a pre-measured package, which they claim eliminates "Guesstimates" or mixing; however, they don’t note how much Go Green each contains.
To use Go Green Drain Opener, they instruct you to empty the packet into the standing water. Then, “activate” the product with hot water. Finally, wait a “few minutes” and the clog is gone.
They boast Go Green Drain Opener’s “cutting edge clog-busting technology” emulsifies, liquefies, and dissolves the stoppage in seconds.
Go Green Drain Opener Pricing and Returns
Go Green costs $10 plus $6.99 shipping for 6 pre-measured packages; at time of order you can add 6 more for another $6.99 in fees for a total of 12 Go Green Drain Opener packets. Tristar/Go Green Drain Opener offers you a 60-day return policy, minus any shipping and handling fees.
Bottom Line: Is Go Green Drain Opener a Scam?
So-called “green” products are all the rage in consumers’ minds, as everybody wants to do their part to protect the environment. Drain cleaners are usually some of the most toxic ingredients we have in our house, so people are especially interested in a product that promises something a little more “eco-friendly.”
But there are several concerns about Go Green Drain Opener that we think you should at least be aware of. First, they don’t list the ingredients. This makes us wonder if just uses sodium hydroxide, a common ingredient in household drain cleaners that is safe for septic tanks and drains but still needs to be handled with care.
Or, quite possibly it’s just some combination of baking soda, salt, and vinegar, the most popular natural alternative to sodium hydroxide. (If you’d like to learn how to make your own drain cleaner, check here)
Second, the pre-measured packages give no indication of their strength. As I’m sure you know, some clogs are nastier than others so it may take more than one package to clean. The product is already quite expensive, especially if it’s made from baking soda, and the price per unit goes up every package you use on one stoppage. And it should be noted that you may have more serious plumbing issues and products like these usually offer only a temporary fix.
Finally, we have to point out that Tristar Products does have a long list of unsatisfied customers whose complaints are “in the process” of being resolved. If this product doesn’t work as they say, you may have a wait getting your money back. And if you do opt for the double offer, you will have paid $13.98 in non-refundable fees, more than the $10 list price.
