About Grill Disk
Made from high-heat steel, the Grill Disk is claimed to instantly turn any pan into an indoor grill, allowing you to achieve juicy, savory outdoor flavor from any pan, all throughout the year, whether you’re cooking burgers, hot dogs, chicken, steaks, veggies, and more.
On top of this, the Grill Disk features a “super non-stick surface,” even heat distribution for perfectly cooked food, and a raised profile that makes beautiful grill marks, while also creating a flavor channel for marinades. And when you’re finished, Grill Disk is dishwasher safe so cleanup’s a breeze.
Sure, it’s currently summer, so closing up your grill for the season might be the farthest thing from your mind. But when the weather turns south, how well can you really expect Grill Disk to work?
First, let’s talk about what gives grilled food its unique flavor.
Why Does Grilled Food Taste So Good?
Ask 100 people whether they prefer the taste of food cooked on a grill versus other methods, and it’s likely you’ll have 99 votes for the grill. This is because of something called the Maillard reaction, which is “a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars that gives browned foods their desirable flavor.”
On top of this, outdoor grilling gives you the ability to change flavor profiles based on whether it’s cooked using propane, charcoal, or wood, which types of woods are used (e.g. hickory, maple, etc.), and even how high your flames are.
Considering this, will Grill Disk provide the same flavors you’ve come to expect using traditional grills?
The Grill Disk vs. Traditional Grilling
Given this, unless your kitchen is professionally appointed, it’s likely that you won’t have the ability to mimic the same flavor infusion inside as you would on a traditional outdoor grill. Can Grill Disk help?
In short, probably not. This is because the raised ridges on Grill Disk might provide the same markings as a regular grill (as well as a similar browning effect), but since the heat source is transferred through your pan, you won’t be able to achieve the same flavor profiles—at least not without a lot of knowhow on your part.
Bummer, right? Are there any other ways you can grill indoors and perhaps achieve similar flavor as outdoor grilling?
Other Indoor Grilling Options
If you have some money burning a hole in your pocket, you can always purchase an indoor electric grill online or through local retailers, which is perhaps your best bet for achieving that outdoor grill flavor. It will cost you though, as most of the options are well in excess of $100.
A less expensive, although just as flavorful, option is to purchase a pre-seasoned cast iron grilling pan. Although you won’t be able to choose your own flavor profiles, this option might give you tasty results, the brown, seared finish, and the perfect grill marks you desire.
In fact, there are even pre-seasoned cast iron inserts essentially identical to Grill Disk, such as PanGrill-it.
Many of these options are priced similarly to Grill Disk, especially when you factor in the high, non-refundable S&H charges, which is what we’ll discuss next.
Grill Disk Pricing & Refund Policy
One 10” Grill Disk is priced at $10 plus $4.95 S&H, although you’ll also be able to purchase the 8” model at checkout for an additional $4.95 S&H.
Whichever option you choose, your order will also include an indoor grilling guide.
All Grill Disk purchased come with a 30-day refund policy, less S&H charges. This means that if you chose the BOGO option, you’ll likely lose more in S&H charges than you’ll ultimately receive as a refund.
With this said, if you’d like to request a refund, you’ll need to contact Grill Disk’s customer service department at 866-304-4225.
Is Grill Disk a Good Option for Indoor Grilling?
Ultimately, Grill Disk might provide a solid value for your money, as long as you keep your expectations realistic.
In other words, it’s important to recognize that Grill Disk’s raised profile will provide a Maillard reaction and the delicious flavor that results, but it won’t provide the same depth of flavor that traditional outdoor grilling offers.
As such, Grill Disk might be a decent alternative for days when you can’t grill outside, or when you’re on the go (such as camping trips), but if you’re even remotely passionate about that wonderful grilled flavor, the Grill Disk almost certainly won’t be your go-to choice.
