Using only 100% natural and safe ingredients, Gundry MD’s ChocolateMD Resveratrol Supplement blends this powerful polyphenol with healthy chocolate to deliver all-around heart protection.

The Gundry MD website also indicates that their ChocolateMD Resveratrol Supplement can help you enjoy normal bathroom habits again, regain control over junk foods, achieve long-lasting energy, and even “counteract the nagging physical and mental effects of aging.”

They tell us that you just need to eat one Resveratrol Supplement chocolate bar per day on a consistent basis, whenever you’d like (no need to take it with a meal). Within and hour on your first day, we’re told most users report an energy increase, with maximum effects after two to three weeks.

Like all Gundry MD products, the ChocolateMD Resveratrol Supplement is tested for quality and purity at an independent, third-party facility.

What’s the bottom line about Gundry MD’s Resveratrol Supplement? Has this polyphenol been shown to provide real-world benefits? And if so, will they be in line with the price you pay for these chocolate bars?

Keep reading, and we'll help you decide if Resveratrol Supplement really can "help your entire body thrive,” as claimed by Gundry MD.

What Causes Poor Cardiovascular Health?

If your doctor tells you that you’re in poor cardiovascular health or you’ve been formally diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, it likely means that you have some combination of conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, and chest pain.

The American Heart Association informs us that these conditions are often caused by atherosclerosis; plaque buildup inside arteries, which leads to hardening, reduced blood flow, and even blockage. As such, cardiovascular disease can put patients at higher risk of heart attack or stroke.

To prevent this from occurring, the AHA recommends eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, meat, and dairy, and increasing your intake of foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grain, nuts, legumes, and so forth.

They also note you should try to be physically active two or more days per week and visit your doctor regularly for checkups.

What about the ingredients in Gundry MD Resveratrol Supplement? Will they provide an added boost to your cardiovascular health?

Does Resveratrol Provide Any Health Benefits?

WebMD tells us that resveratrol belongs to a group of compounds called polyphenols, which are found in high concentrations in the skin of red grapes, along with peanuts and berries.

In a nutshell (pun intended), some preclinical research suggests that, like antioxidants, these polyphenols could provide benefits related to cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disease, and even type 2 diabetes.

They add that in some animal trials (yeast, worms, fruit flies, fish, and mice), resveratrol has been shown to increase lifespan, although Examine.com points out that this same effect has not been shown in humans.

In this same vein, the Micronutrient Information Center at Oregon State University notes that much of the existing clinical evidence for resveratrol’s benefits in humans as a whole (whether obtained from Gundry MD’s version or elsewhere) is limited, although seemingly positive.

Given this limited evidence, WebMD and Drugs.com indicate there’s no recommended resveratrol dosage, although Examine.com informs that doses of anywhere between 5mg and 500mg per day have been studied.

What About the Cocoa, Sunflower Lecithin, & Vanilla In Gundry MD’s Resveratrol Supplement?

Cocoa (the plant where chocolate comes from) also contains antioxidants and other potentially beneficial chemicals like flavonoids, which may help relax veins and reduce high blood pressure.

To achieve this benefit, WebMD references “46-105 grams per day of dark or milk chocolate, providing 213-500 mg of the active ingredients, cocoa polyphenols.” Examine.com indicates 26-40g of dark chocolate products, while Drugs.com claims “No specific dosing recommendations can be made.”

Sunflower lecithin is often used in chocolate and baked goods because it provides a creamy, moist, smooth texture. WiseGeek tells us the high levels of essential fatty acids it contains may also help improve health and brain function.

Finally, the vanilla in Gundry MD’s Resveratrol Supplement appears to be for flavoring.

Are There Any Potential Side Effects From ChoclateMD?

On the Resveratrol Supplement website, Dr. Gundry notes that “as a physician, I recommend consulting with your own health care provider before beginning any new program.”

Many of the previously mentioned websites we visited during our research indicated that medium-term resveratrol use of up to 250mg per day probably wouldn't cause any side effects for most users.

With this said, Oregon State University emphasized that "Long-term, high resveratrol intake might affect the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs (i.e., those metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes), potentially reducing their efficacy or increasing their toxicity.”

WebMD also indicated that resveratrol could potentially interact with medications changed by the liver (lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion)), as well as medications that slow blood clotting.

According to the USDA, 1 tbsp (5.4g) of cocoa solids contains about 12mg of natural caffeine, too much of which could lead to sides effects like nervousness, sleeplessness, and a rapid heartbeat.

Considering an average cup of coffee contains about 95mg of caffeine, though, you might need to be especially sensitive to stimulants to experience this from each 8g piece of Resveratrol Supplement.

Note: During our research, we didn’t encounter any conclusive references regarding how common these side effects are, at what doses they’re most likely to occur, or the percentage of users they impact.

How Much Does Gundry MD’s Resveratrol Supplement Cost?

On their ChocolateMD.com site, Gundry MD Resveratrol Supplement was priced as follows:

  • 1 Box (30 pieces, 8.47 oz): $49.95
  • 2 Boxes: $89.95
  • 3 Boxes: $124.95

Are Customers Leaving Positive Reviews Gundry MD Products?

Although their Resveratrol Supplement was newly released at the time of our research, HighYa’s readers had provided over 1,000 reviews for many of Gundry MD’s other popular supplements, including Vital Reds, Prebiothrive, and Primal Plants (which, similar to their Resveratrol supplement, also promises to deliver polyphenols).

With average ratings around 4.5 stars (for those with feedback), most customer compliments seemed related to improved health (e.g. reduced blood pressure, decreased hunger, increased energy, etc.).

On the other hand, common complaints referenced no results, side effects (often digestive upset), and customer service-related issues. In most of these instances, a company representative responded directly to the customer in an effort to resolve the situation.

Note: Multiple Canadian and European residents noted their shipments took a long time to arrive and that they were charged high customs fees. While Gundry MD doesn’t impose these fees, it might be worth keeping in mind if you’re located outside the U.S.

From a company perspective, Beverly Hills, CA-based Gundry MD held an A- rating with the Better Business Bureau and eight closed complaints as of 4/11/17. No details were available.

Before founding the company, Dr. Steven Gundry established the International Heart & Lung Institute and the Center for Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara, CA, where he continues to work as Director. To date, he has more than four decades of medical experience.

He’s also the bestselling author of Dr. Gundry’s Diet Evolution and The Plant Paradox.

While the physician behind this supplement certainly has robust medical experience, does this necessary mean that Gundry MD will provide better health benefits than competing resveratrol formulas?

How Does Gundry MD’s Formula Compare to Other Resveratrol Supplements?

Searching Google Shopping for “resveratrol supplement” returned hundreds of results during our research, from popular brands like Swanson, Puritan’s Pride, Spring Valley, Now Foods, and Nature’s way. Some encapsulated versions were priced as low as $8, while the majority seemed to fall between $15 and $30.

As far as other resveratrol-infused chocolate products? The only similar option we encountered was Sacred Chocolate, which was priced at $10.95 for a 1.44oz heart-shaped bar. However, they didn’t indicate the specific amount of resveratrol included (only the polyphenols).

Although we didn’t encounter any specific amounts, The Harvard Health blog indicates that foods like “peanuts, pistachios, grapes, red and white wine, blueberries, cranberries, and even cocoa and dark chocolate” contain especially high resveratrol levels. So, you might be able to get your fix from foods, as well.

Considering the mostly higher price of Gundry MD’s version, can you expect it to provide meaningfully more value for the money than these other options? Let’s continue this conversation as we come to a conclusion about Resveratrol Supplement.

Our Final Thoughts About the Gundry MD ChocolateMD Resveratrol Supplement

Here’s some quick perspective: Resveratrol is but one antioxidant, and antioxidants are but one class of compounds that may provide cardiovascular benefits.

This means that if you’re looking to increase your intake, you can obtain resveratrol and other antioxidants from many of the same foods, including berries, nuts, and some beans. You can also get them from thousands of antioxidant-rich supplements that crowd the marketplace; everything from pills to powders, and even chocolate bars like Gundry MD’s version.

The potential problem?

First, the National Institutes of Health tells us that, “Rigorous trials of antioxidant supplements in large numbers of people have not found that high doses of antioxidant supplements prevent disease.” In other words, despite the well known cell-protecting benefits of antioxidants in general, there’s insufficient evidence indicating that they can help prevent any diseases.

Second, based on what we learned from the authoritative sources referenced in the Ingredients & Nutrition Details section above, there’s only limited preclinical evidence that resveratrol, specifically, can provide cardiovascular benefits. And there’s even less that it can improve regularity, boost energy, counteract the effects of aging, or any of the other claims made on the Gundry MD website.

These sources also note there’s no known dosage at which resveratrol can provide any benefits, so it’s unclear whether the 100mg you’ll ingest after eating a Gundry MD chocolate bar will provide any more results than the 500mg you’ll get per capsule of a much less expensive resveratrol supplement.

Given these cautions, HighYa readers seemed to have rated many of Gundry MD’s other products quite highly, although there’s certainly no guarantee that you’ll experience the same.

If you don’t, though, Gundry MD stands behind their Resveratrol Supplement with a 90-day refund policy, so you might not have much more to lose than a few dollars in return shipping.
