Most terrible business practice ever

By Bill Goebel, Ohio, Verified Reviewer

So a cute young lady pulls me aside on the street in Columbus and signs me up. I wanted to try a service anyway so let's go with it. Two boxes with two meals each. The stuff came and it was not great, not worth $49, not worth $69.

I went online and canceled the service. I also gave them feedback that the gel packs broke and got all over everything. They smelled like alcohol and I had to throw the food away. Mauricio C. could not help me on the Chat and Chat Supervisor was even worse. Turns out, this is a regular thing for them. I gave one star because I could not give any less.

Stay away from HelloFresh, especially if they try to sign you up on the street.

Sent meals I never ordered

By Rob Deleo, Walcott, CT, Verified Reviewer

Do not use this company unless you want to get screwed out of money and then be told you can't talk to anyone. I will be making a formal complaint against them with the Better Business Bureau.

Moldy cheese, wilted produce

By Randy Guthrie, Denver, CO, Verified Reviewer

After receiving a pitch in the mail ($20 off each of your first three boxes), I gave HelloFresh a try. My first box contained a package of cheddar cheese that was mostly blue-green from mold and carrots that were so rubbery I could bend them in half. A chat with a rep resulted in a $10 credit, which they refused to apply until my $20 off trial period ended.

So, although they credited me $10 for spoilage, they insisted on treating it as some sort of gift. This may explain their 17% customer retention rate.

Disappointing customer service

By Molly S., Washington, Verified Reviewer

I contacted HelloFresh customer service via the online messaging feature because it was too late to call. I explained how I saw an email notifying me that a package was being delivered, but explained that I had not ordered this package and that the food was not selected by me. They told me it was too late to send it back.

I asked if they could do anything to help me because I thought I had pushed cancel for this period and I didn't choose this food and cannot eat these options. They said I had canceled the previous 12 weeks but after that, it auto-renews to automatically select an order for me. I told them I didn't realize that is how it worked. I thought I was able to cancel all the future and just select when I wanted to make a shipment, but I misunderstood how the company works. When I did it before, I thought it was all in the red. I also did not get emails notifying me in advance that an order was upcoming. I only received an email the day before telling me the shipment was already on its way. I didn't feel that I had a chance to even try to cancel it.

They told me they couldn't do anything for me and I told them I don't think that is a good practice, and if that is how the company works, taking money from the customer with no regard for their happiness with the product, I would like to cancel my subscription. Their response was to say goodbye and essentially "hang up" on our conversation.

Today, I called HelloFresh customer service and spoke to a manager. They essentially did the same thing. The only difference was to cancel my subscription for me when I asked. Otherwise, they did nothing for me and gave me absolutely no incentive to stay on with their service. There is a lot of competition out there and many other services like this, and there is no way this company will last with service like this - I was shocked at the lack of care for my issue, especially because this is the first time I have had an issue. You could tell they just wanted to be off the phone and finished with the conversation, they were not worried at all that they lost a potentially long-paying customer.

Dumbest idea ever

By Steve K., Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

The problems with this dumb idea...

1. I pay them to shop for me in Toronto and ship the food to me in Vancouver - how the heck is this environmentally sound?

2. The potions for two people is less than needed for one.

3. Could I have not just gone to the store and buy the ingredients myself?

At the end of the process, I prep and cook the food. What do they do? Go shopping for me 4,400 Km away.

4. One of the ingredients was moldy - could have been a one-off, so I won't fault them.

I have read some good reviews. Are they mental?

TERRIBLE customer service, LATE delivery, NO refund

By Andrea B., New York, Verified Reviewer

Ugh, I usually don't care about giving reviews, but this company deserves it. I would give it 0 stars if I could. Terrible customer service, both manager and agent. Delayed delivery and no refund for the unprofessional service. There was so email, no tracking system, nothing. Just "In Transit" after being more than an hour late. If they promised it would come between 8 am and 8 pm, 8:01 is considered late. It is definitely a few hours past 8, I'm hungry, and now need to spend extra to get food instead of the food from HelloFresh that I already paid for.

The customer service agent and manager both did not help at all. No resolution whatsoever to keep their clients, no refund even after repeatedly explaining how much inconvenience it has caused me and my family. Even when they were clearly wrong, the agent was sarcastic and made it even worse.

Save your money! Don't waste your time and energy. The only reason I'm doing this is to warn others so they won't have to deal with this disappointing company. There are other better options, better companies who can do better.

Bait and switch

By Kendall L., Boulder, CO, Verified Reviewer

I signed on for a $59/week plan and was happy at first with the recipes. They were tasty and the instructions were easy for my 11-year-old to follow (although they take way longer to prep than they claim). We did notice that the veggies were often not fresh and we once received shrimp that was inedible. I highly recommend that you avoid ordering seafood from them. It's just not fresh.

Then they started to introduce "premium" meals, which cost quite a bit extra. I ordered one without realizing it and vowed to pay closer attention in the future. Soon after that, there was a week which I carefully skipped since we had out-of-town guests. But I received an email letting me know my credit card had been charged. I called immediately to tell them not to ship it and they said I had ordered it and they couldn't cancel shipment even though it was several days ahead. Coincidentally they were shipping me two premium meals which added $28 to my weekly bill. I don't even eat steak and had indicated that in my preferences, but they were shipping me steak and lobster which I had not ordered.

Customer service was completely unapologetic, so I canceled my subscription. This was not the first time I had received the wrong meals and I was no longer comfortable giving them free reign on my credit card. Luckily I was able to dispute the charge with my credit card company.

HelloFresh won't last long with customer service like this. At best they are ignorant, and at worst they are baiting and switching intentionally.

CROOKS

By Danielle F., Georgia, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for HelloFresh wanting to give it a try. After spending wasted time figuring out what the heck is going on on the website, I decided to cancel. Exactly 23 minutes after signing up.

Apparently clicking a picture authorizes HelloFresh to charge your credit card and still send an unwanted delivery after a canceled subscription. A $33.94 + $11.97 gourmet upcharge on my credit card?! A 23-minute subscription!? OUTRAGEOUS. Needless to say I went to the web chat followed by a live phone call to resolve (or attempt to) the charges. Terrible customer service, it is absurd how they treat their customers and won't even at least TRY to make things right.

Well, I got the delivery I didn't want so I figured I might as well whip up the Salsa Verde meal I unwillingly paid for. The result - mediocre-unsavory meal, food poisoning, 18 hours of torture, and a trip to the hospital to get IV hydrated. Today - recall on HelloFresh red chili peppers for salmonella. HelloFresh, you are a bunch of CROOKS!

This company is a rip off, do not do it!

By Kristen F., Texas, Verified Reviewer

A friend of mine recommended a company called HelloFresh. So I went on their site to see what it was all about. The first thing they ask you to do is to put in your information and choose a method of payment. I should have stopped right there as that was a huge red flag, but since she had worked with this company, I thought I would check it out. Well, they charged me $69.88 when I never selected any food or completed an order. So I called the company today and they said I did complete the order and the food is already on the way. Darn scam! They would give me back $49.95 but no more since I had the coupon. That is crazy!

DO NOT ORDER

By Sally M., Maine, Verified Reviewer

Do not order from this company. I wanted a vegetarian menu. The directions wanted my credit card information FIRST then I could select my meal plan. After my submission of payment there was no option and now (10 minutes after my order) they will neither refund my money nor cancel the delivery of food I do not want.

Aggressive selling

By Yasin S., Duluth, GA, Verified Reviewer

When I ordered the first time, the lady asked me if I want to order for the future and I replied, once we taste it, we will contact and order. But suddenly I noticed my credit card was being charged again, so when I called them, I was told that the next order will arrive in 3 days. This is without my ordering and not knowing what is coming, so I asked them to cancel it, which they declined to do. The strange thing is when I placed the initial order, nowhere it was mentioned about auto subscription/repeat anything like that. So I would advise to be very careful, this company automatically enrolls you in repeat order program.
