What is Joint Envy?

Formulated specifically for those dealing with joint aches and pains, Joint Envy is a dietary supplement that claims to contain clinically tested levels of four “unique, breakthrough ingredients” for optimal joint comfort.

The manufacturer of the product, Caliber Nutra, claims that it is effective for joint pain in the knees, back, and elsewhere in the body, stating that as the population ages, these sorts of issues become more and more common, preventing individuals from enjoying life to the fullest.

Before jumping in and evaluating these claims, let’s take a brief moment to explore the primary causes of joint pain, as well as what authoritative sources like Healthline and the Mayo Clinic have to say about finding relief.

What Causes Joint Pain?

Joints make up the connection point between the bones within our bodies, providing structural support and helping you move. When you experience joint pain, it can affect this mobility, and also cause quite a bit of pain to boot.

According to WebMD, knee pain is the most common joint-related issue, and is reported by one-third of all individuals nationwide. Just as Caliber Nutra claims, they go on to state that as we age, our risk for developing this and other types of joint pain only increases.

The Mayo Clinic reports that the most common form of this pain originates from an inflammation within the joint itself.

That said, WebMD states that the actual causes of joint pain are varied, and can include issues stemming from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, gout, strains, sprains, and other injuries. 29.3 percent of people ages 45–64 reported having doctor-diagnosed arthritis, according to the Center for Disease Control. The figure jumps up to 49.6 percent with those age 65 and up.

As for what can be done about the pain, over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen sodium (Aleve) may help. Topical agents, injections, and physical therapy are also options for more severe pain that does not respond to basic medications.

But what about supplements like Joint Envy? Can they be expected to provide any real benefits relating to joint pain? In the next section, we’ll take a closer look to find out.

Joint Envy Ingredients

As we mentioned earlier, Caliber Nutra claims that Joint Envy contains four unique, breakthrough ingredients for optimal joint comfort. These ingredients include the following:

  • Eggshell membrane – 500 mg
  • SCP-II Complex – 25 mg
  • Hyaluronic Acid – 30 mg
  • Theacrine – 125 mg

The website also mentions that rice concentrate and rice bran extract are included in the formula, which act as emulsifiers within the supplement.

We know you’ve come here for actionable advice, so let’s jump right in and compare the company’s lofty claims to what sources such as WebMD, the Mayo Clinic, and Examine.com are reporting.

Eggshell Membrane

The claims: Caliber Nutra says that eggshell membranes are more effective for improving joint health and flexibility than any other single ingredient. They claim that it contains both collagen and chondroitin, and at the level included within Joint Envy (500 mg), they state that it has been clinically proven to ease joint pain within seven to ten days.

Our findings: During our research, we found that eggshell membranes do include glucosamine and chondroitin, two substances listed by WebMD as having potential to help with joint pain and improve overall function, though the company goes on to say that they don’t work for everyone.

We found a number of clinical studies that illustrate positive results in controlled trials where eggshell membranes have been used, though none of them explicitly listed that they could provide more effective support than “any other joint pain ingredient.”

SCP-II Complex

The claims: The manufacturer lists that this unique collagen complex is found in wild salmon, and they claim that it’s been clinically tested to support the structural and functional support of joints.

Our findings: None of the sources we referred to during our research (WebMD, Examine.com, and the Mayo Clinic) listed any specific data for SCP-II Complex, but seeing as this substance is essentially type II collagen, WebMD reports that there is insufficient evidence tying the protein to meaningful joint pain relief.

Despite this, Examine.com does report that a few studies have shown a decrease in joint pain stemming from multiple forms of arthritis when users took collagen supplements for several months.

Hyaluronic Acid

The claims: Hyaluronic acid can help increase joint mobility, flexibility, and overall performance.

Our findings: A minor increase in range of motion associated with hyaluronic acid supplementation has been reported by Examine.com, though notably, the vast majority of clinical studies referenced seemed to use significantly higher dosages (around 1500 mg) than the 30 mg included within Joint Envy.

Theacrine

The claims: Theacrine behaves similarly to caffeine, but without the jitters.

Our findings: Theacrine is listed as showing insufficient evidence for fatigue on WebMD. Examine.com reports that a small subjective boost in fatigue has been observed, but it cannot be tied into theacrine directly seeing as a blend of ingredients were used during the trial in question.

Potential Joint Envy Side Effects

According to WebMD, Drugs.com, Examine.com and the Mayo Clinic, none of the ingredients used within Joint Envy have been reported to cause major side effects.

That said, WebMD lists specifically that because collagen includes chondroitin and glucosamine, it may carry with it symptoms like nausea, heartburn, diarrhea and constipation, drowsiness, skin reactions, and headache. The website did not report the dosage level where these side effects may be most common, nor did we encounter any other authoritative sources with this information.

Joint Envy vs Other Joint Pain Solutions

Looking around online, you may notice that there are hundreds of different joint health and joint pain relief solutions available today. The question then becomes; how does Joint Envy compare to some of the more popular solutions on the market?

Taking a look on Amazon.com, the top selling supplement with over 1,100 reviews as of this writing was Zenwise Health. The product itself was more expensive than Joint Envy when we looked, coming in at $25.77, and it included several of the same ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid.

It also included glucosamine and chondroitin, two substances that we learned about earlier on in the ingredients section that are reported by WebMD and Examine.com to potentially relieve joint pain.

These ingredients were also included in the dosages recommended by WebMD, as opposed to the lower amounts found within the 500 mg worth of eggshell membrane found in Joint Envy.

Based on these differences, as well as on what we’ve learned about joint support supplements in general, we’d recommend considering the following:

  • Slow down and do your research. As is the case with all products, making a hasty, emotionally-informed purchase is almost never the best approach, especially when the product in question relates to your physical health and well-being. Instead, take your time and evaluate the product’s ingredients and claims by visiting authority sites like WebMD, Examine.com and the Mayo Clinic. Pay close attention to what each of these has to say about each ingredient included in the formula.
  • Don’t underestimate the value of social proof. Having real, genuine customer reviews to read through can often help you decide what the best option is for your needs, especially if the product is only available online like Joint Envy. Unfortunately, we didn’t encounter any verifiable reviews for Caliber Nutra’s product during our research.
  • Always try and find dosage recommendations. Sources like WebMD, Examine.com, and Drugs.com will often list recommended dosages for certain ingredients. Finding a product that closely matches these levels might be able to provide more relief than those that include too much–or too little–of a particular ingredient.

Joint Envy: Our Verdict

To recap, the makers of Joint Envy claim that the supplement includes four unique breakthrough ingredients for optimal joint health.

Based on what we’ve learned, we feel that it’s fair to say that several of the ingredients included in the formula may be beneficial for joint pain and joint health in general.

That said, although Caliber Nutra labels these ingredients a “breakthrough,” we were able to find several of them in other competing products available online.

We discovered that eggshell membranes indeed show clinical data supporting their ability to aid joint health, though this is likely to be due to the glucosamine and chondroitin found within the substance.

As we found above, these are both available directly–and at recommended dosage amounts–in the most popular joint health supplement on Amazon.

Because of the complex nature of joint health, as well as the still-evolving data surrounding the ingredients in many supplements similar to Joint Envy, our first step were we in your shoes might be to speak with an orthopedic physician about all of the options available to you.

Should you decide to jump in right away and give the product a shot, don’t forget that you’ll have the 30-day return policy to fall back on should you decide that it isn’t for you.
