About One Cafe

One Cafe is a new device that drops in the filter basket of your existing coffee maker and allows you to make single-serving cups in any multi-cup pot. In addition, the One Cafe’s attached dial allows you to adjust the brew strength to your liking.

On top of this, One Cafe is claimed to actually brew your coffee—instead of forcing water through the pod like traditional single-serving machines—giving you convenience and a strong cuppa joe. With One Cafe, you’ll also be able to brew single serving tea, cider, hot chocolate, and even Keurig K-Cups.

According to the manufacturer, One Cafe works over 4 steps:

  1. Insert your single serve coffee pod.
  2. Close the One Cafe’s lid to pierce the pod’s foil.
  3. Adjust desired brew strength by turning the dial.
  4. Place the One Cafe into your coffee maker’s filter basket, add water, and brew!

We have to admit that the idea behind One Cafe is ingenious. In fact, you probably had a “Why didn’t I think of that?” moment after watching the One Cafe commercial.

But when it comes down to it, can you expect One Cafe to work as well as it claims? Is it worth the money? Consider the following:

Other Single Brew Options?

When searching online for similar options, one of the first products we came across was the Joe Pod, which got its start through a Kickstarter campaign that ended in 2014. In fact, if you compare the One Cafe and the Joe Pod side by side, they appear to be essentially the same product—even using identical pictures on each of their websites.

While we weren’t able to find any third-party websites confirming this, in our experience, it’s probably the case that Joe Pod likely sold the rights to their product to an “As Seen on TV” manufacturer (more about this in a moment).

How Well Can You Expect One Cafe to Work?

With so many different brands of coffee makers out there, one of the first questions that came to mind is, “How well can we expect One Cafe to work?” Are there any specific coffee makers that it absolutely won’t work with?

Unfortunately, there aren’t any guidelines provided on the One Cafe website to answer either of these important questions, which we’ll come back around to in a moment.

Regarding the included brew pods, we’d have to wonder how well they’d work with regular coffee grounds, as the One Cafe requires foil seals in order to pierce, which the plastic brew pods don’t feature.

Mind the Arbitration

Finally, keep in mind that by placing an order on the One Cafe website, you’ll be bound by an arbitration agreement. This means your legal rights will be severely limited in the event of some type of damages, including a trial by jury or becoming part of a class action lawsuit.

Are Customers Excited About One Cafe?

One Cafe was a very new product at the time of our research (URL registered March 2015) and didn’t have any online customer reviews available.

However, Joe Pod had 9 Amazon reviews, with an average rating of 3.8 stars as of 5/11/15. Common compliments were that it worked surprisingly well, that it’s easy to clean, and that it’s even small enough to travel with. On the other hand, some of the most common complaints cited coffee grounds in cups, lack of compatibility with coffee makers, and being required to experiment with brewing times.

In fact, although they rated the Joe Pod 5 stars, one Amazon reviewer claimed that it took them a lot of trial and error to get it to work with their coffee maker, which involved continuing to use a paper filter, and even bypassing the machine’s sensors. Ultimately, you might find this more trouble than it’s worth.

With this said, since One Cafe now appears to be manufactured by a different company, there’s no way to know if you can expect to experience the same.

From a company perspective, One Cafe is manufactured by Idea Village, a large manufacturer of ASOTV products, including Yes! by Finishing Touch, Micro Touch One Razor, Snackeez, and many more.

Among 450 HighYa reader reviews for these products, they had an average rating of 2.5 stars, with common complaints citing poor quality, failure to work as advertised, and difficult customer service experiences. Again, you may not experience the same with One Cafe, but it’s something to keep in mind nonetheless.

One Cafe Pricing & Refund Policy

One Cafe is priced at $14.99 plus $6.99 S&H, which will also include 6 reusable brew pods.

One Cafe comes with a 30-day refund policy, less S&H charges. In order to request a refund, you’ll need to contact customer service at 844-239-0349.

Is One Cafe Your Single-Brew Solution?

Chopping to the point: The One Cafe’s previous generation (Joe Pod) appears to have received favorable online reviews, although how closely the One Cafe’s construction remains to the Joe Pod is unknown, so you might not experience the same.

Overall, being able to turn your traditional coffee maker into a single cup brewer is a great idea, but you’ll have to decide if losing out on nearly $10 in S&H is worth giving it a shot.
