About QuietPure Mobile
You already have a lot of options for purifying the air in your home. What happens, though, when you’re on the move, whether at work, in the car, staying at a hotel, or anywhere else?
To help you “breathe clean air wherever you go,” the QuietPure Mobile air purifier promises to help remove up to 99.7% of airborne and surface contaminants, including germs, pollen, pet dander, odors, viruses, and more—in seconds! All of this in a compact design weighing only 8oz, with ultra-quiet operation (even on its highest setting) and zero filters to replace.
QuietPure Mobile claims to accomplish this using proprietary ActivePure® technology, or what the company promotes as “NASA-Originated” and “Space-Certified Purification” (don’t worry, we’ll talk more about this shortly). In fact, the company claims that this technology is so advanced that, despite measuring only 6” X 1” X 3.5”, QuietPure Mobile “cleans the air faster and better than any other air purification system in the world.”
You want clean air on the go, but you also want to make sure you: a) aren’t paying for a lot of marketing hype, and b) that you’re not paying too much when it comes to QuietPure Mobile. To help you make a more informed decision, let’s start off with perhaps your biggest question: how does it work?
What Is QuietPure Mobile’s ActivePure® Technology?
According to SpaceFoundation.org (the organization that gave the technology their stamp of approval), radiant catalytic ionization—the formal name for Aerus’ ActivePure®—was born out of the space program. How so?
Originally, NASA researchers created “ultra-thin layers of titanium dioxide” that, when exposed to ultraviolet light, would convert the potentially harmful gas ethylene into useful carbon dioxide and water. As such, it was helpful for growing vegetables in the self-contained environment of space.
Aerus then claims to have improved upon NASA’s technology by using “a proprietary high-power UVX bulb shining on a catalytic target consisting of a honey-comb cell coated with a Quad Metallic Hydrophilic Coating” (say that five times fast!) and including it in their home purification systems.
In their version, these cells create a plasma consisting of “Hydroxyls, Hydroxides, Super Oxide Ions, Ozonite Ions and Hydro-Peroxides,” which then spread out into the room. Then, as this plasma encounters contaminants, it’s said to eliminate up to 99.9% of them.
Don’t worry, we won’t bore you with a long discussion of how this is supposed to work. Mainly, the problem is that we didn’t encounter any clinical evidence showing that ActivePure technology specifically, or QuietPure Mobile in general, can deliver on these claims.
Effectiveness aside, what kind of efficiency can you expect from QuietPure Mobile?
How Fast Will QuietPure Clean Your Air?
According to the device’s website, QuietPure Mobile is useful for purifying a room up to about 350 sq ft and operates at a maximum of 60 cubic feet per minute. In other words, it claims to clean 60 cubic feet of air every minute.
Given that there’s 2,450 cubic feet of air in a 350 sq ft room, this means that—in a best-case scenario—it will take QuietPure Mobile a minimum of 40 minutes to purify the air. Again, this is also assuming their ActivePure technology works as well as the company claims.
Here’s the really important part: Just because a device like QuietPure is moving air through it, doesn’t mean that all of this air is being cleaned. Makes sense, right?
Because of this, the amount of air QuietPure Mobile moves isn’t the most important factor you should look at. Instead, you want to focus on CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate), which focuses on the amount of contaminants removed from the air, versus only the volume.
Unfortunately, we’re not told any of this information about QuietPure Mobile, or how its CADR stacks up against other similar devices. Speaking of which…
Does QuietPure Mobile Have Any Competition?
Search online for “mobile air purifier” or “portable air cleaner,” and you’ll quickly find that you have hundreds of different options in all shapes, sizes, colors, and filtration types.
One of the first things you’ll notice about these options, though, is that they’re nowhere near as small as QuietPure Mobile. In fact, at just 6” X 1” X 3.5”, most of the competition seems to come in at roughly double the size. So, if device size is your biggest factor, then you might be hard-pressed to outdo QuietPure Mobile.
However, keep in mind that along with smaller size comes decreased performance; namely, the amount of space the purifier can handle, as well as the amount of air it can move per minute.
To this extent, comparing the original QuietPure with the smaller QuietPure Mobile, it appears you’ll be losing about 20 cubic feet per minute in air movement. Amazingly, the Mobile model appears to handle rooms up to 350 sq ft, while the original can only handle 250 sq ft.
What about from a price perspective?
How Much Does QuietPure Mobile Cost?
If purchased directly through the company, you’ll only have to pay $19.95 up front for QuietPure Mobile, which includes free shipping. Then, after 30 days, you’ll be charged 5 monthly installments of $34.95 each, bringing your total to $194.70.
With your order, you also receive a variety of attachments, including a 12 volt DC car adapter, AC adapter, and regional AC adapters for use when traveling.
Comparatively, the original QuietPure would only cost you $149.95 at the time of our research, which seems to be in line with much of the competition.
All QuietPure Mobile purifiers come with a 30-day money back guarantee and a 1-year warranty against defects in workmanship and materials (you can purchase one or two additional years at checkout).
In order to request a refund or file a warranty claim, you’ll need to contact customer service at 888-764-0693 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Are There Any Ongoing Costs for QuietPure Mobile?
While QuietPure doesn’t require filters (more about this in the final section), this doesn’t mean that it’s maintenance-free. Here’s how the company puts it:
“The QuietPure Mobile requires very low maintenance. Depending on conditions, it will require periodic cleaning of certain internal components every one to three months. For optimum performance, it is recommended to replace components annually. A service kit is available which includes a new ActivePure® Target, UV bulb, and ActivePure® Purification Plate. This kit is available by calling Aerus’ Customer Service.”
After calling the company’s helpful customer service line, we learned this kit costs $25.99 and is something that doesn’t require a specialist (in other words, just about anyone should be able to handle it).
Is QuietPure Mobile a Solid Use of Your Money?
You want clean air and you’re willing the spend the necessary money to accomplish it. Ultimately though, whether or not you’ll find a device to be valuable can depend a lot on personal preference.
As we mentioned above though, if size is your primary concern, then you’re probably not going to find anything smaller than the QuietPure Mobile. On the other hand, because it’s so small, we might have some concerns about how efficiently a device like QuietPure Mobile will operate.
Also, it seems there’s a lot of clinical evidence missing that validates the company’s claims about their ActivePure technology.
Given this, if your primary concern is effectiveness and efficiency, then other full-sized models (especially those with HEPA filters, which have reams of evidence showing their contaminant-stopping power) might be more your speed. If you feel like giving QuietPure a chance, (Aerus, formerly known as Electrolux between 1914 and 2001) seems to come with a solid customer reputation and to stand behind their products with a 30-day refund policy.
