Not what I was hoping for

By Megan Marrs, Massachusetts, Verified Reviewer

Quip's ads really won me over - this thing looked so sleek and stylish, and I needed a travel electric toothbrush for my extended trips abroad that didn't involve so many cords.

To be fair, it is certainly stylish. And the timer is great. However, the vibrations felt so light, I just didn't feel like my teeth were really getting clean. The power feels wimpy compared to my Sonicare.

I know with Sonicare they say not to manually move the brush around, just lightly glide it across your teeth while the brush pulses. I tried to figure out if maybe I was using Quip incorrectly - maybe with this model you are supposed to do more traditional tooth-brushing movements, but I couldn't find any info.

The design is also lacking once you look past the sleek looks. The rounded bottom means that this brush can't sit upright. However, the back of the brush has a raised tongue compressor, so if you try to set it down on the sink, it'll just roll over to the side.

The biggest issue is the vibrations though - I just can't get over feeling like my teeth aren't really as clean as they should be after using it. I still take it on overnights and small trips, but it definitely doesn't instill enough confidence to make it a fulltime toothbrush replacement.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

We are so sorry to hear that !uip wasn't for you, this is exactly why we have a 30-day return policy as a toothbrush is a very personal object! You have read in our ads and website before buying, and our blog and welcome booklet after buying whether a toothbrush is "functional" really comes down to how you use it, not what the level of vibrations it has.

That is why Quip is deliberately set to a sensitive level of vibrations. You get all the benefits of an electric brush (fresher feeling, softer brushing, a timer and so on), without the downsides created by needless power (bigger brush, shorter battery life, large charging stand, uncomfortable in mouth feeling to many). With that said, we certainly cannot speak to personal preference. The best brush for you is one that encourages you to brush two times a day for two full minutes. You can read more on the true benefits of an electric brush on our blog at www.getquip.com/blog/toothbrush-design-story.

We hope this helps explain why Quip vibrates the way it does. As for the rounded bottom, we are sorry if this was also not clear. The brush comes with a stand that you can put on a side or stick to your mirror. You should never have to lay Quip down as that is unhygienic. With that said, it is designed to lay flat using bumps on the back of the brush head, so we are surprised to hear it did not.

We are sorry Quip wasn't suited as your daily brush and we hope you keep up the good brushing technique whichever power setting you set your brush!

The "doesn't clean, leaves plaque" toothbrush

By Gail Ash, Red Bank, NJ, Verified Reviewer

My daughter and I were excited to try this unique toothbrush, so we went all in and bought two, along with the auto-refill. Very quickly we saw a film form on our teeth that was not there before using Quip. We had to floss before and after each time we brushed with this toothbrush as it did not remove most food.

The day after a cleaning at the dentist, the film was back. Our teeth never felt clean! The dental hygienist was not happy with the state of our teeth or gums. Two days later the film was back on our teeth, so we stopped using Quip and bought a Sonicare. Two weeks later, no film and no food between our teeth.

I contacted Quip, and all they did was cite their "benefits." They did not seem to care that their toothbrush did not clean.

The bottom line is, Quip does not clean teeth well!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Jan 9, 2018

Hi Gail,

We are sorry to hear about your recent dental visit. We hope that your dentist and dental hygienist mentioned that the effectiveness of any toothbrush comes down to how it is used, not the features it has.

Quip uses the same nylon bristles, motor and in fact, they are manufactured next to other popular leading brands in the industry. So there will be no difference in the way your Quip itself brushes your teeth. The core thing that affects your oral health is how you use a toothbrush, diet, and genetics.

Unfortunately, there are many dangerous misconceptions in oral care that we are trying to correct, such as the idea that whether a toothbrush is manual, gently vibrating, vigorously vibrating or rotating toothbrush is what effects your oral health. If they are all being used correctly (and have soft bristles), they will all "clean" perfectly.

The truth is, all toothbrushes should be used in exactly the same way, gently brushing tooth by tooth, focusing on the gum line area, making sure to cover the whole mouth. Unfortunately, many believe that manual brushes should be used with "big strong sweeping brushing motions" and electric brushes "don't need to be wiggled around at all." It is these misconceptions that can, in rare cases, people decline (or improve!) their oral health when they are changing brushes, and it sounds like for some reason the Quip toothbrush changed your technique for the worse. We are sorry to hear this, especially as we designed quip to change people's technique and understanding of oral care for the better!

As we always say, we cannot speak about personal preference because the best brush for you is one that encourages you to brush 2 times a day, for a full 2 minutes.

We thank you for giving Quip a try.

Amazing brush - if it didn't always break.

By Tim Lucier, Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I completely loved my Quip for the first few months. I had bought 3, one for me, my mom, and my dad.

After a while, my replaceable toothbrush part of the quip started just snapping off mid-brush. I contacted Quip, and they sent a replacement, and they said I had been changing the head wrong and sent instructions in gif form. The instructions were exactly how I had been changing the head, but I dutifully followed their new instructions to a tee.

Then, my mom and dad both reported to me that theirs had broken as well. I contacted Quip, got replacements, and sent them the instructions to be sure they were changing the Quip right.

Then, mine broke again.

Quip replaced mine again, but then my mom's broke a second time too. From regular, careful use. They refused to replace it, told me they were being nice before, but their warranty clearly stated misuse of the brush would void the warranty. They offered 50% off, and my mom wanted her brush back (because she does love it), so she paid for it.

Then, my dad's broke again.

I ask you which is more likely, a family of 3, all smart people who are good at following directions, all mishandle their brush, breaking it in the same way, OR there is a flaw with the brush that causes it to crack? I hopped on Twitter and saw someone else was having the same issue.

We've been through 6 brushes!

Quip is refusing to replace my father's brush as well, but he is not as forgiving as my mother, and he prefers to go back to a regular toothbrush then pay for a new brush that will likely break again in a few months.

I can't in good conscious recommend this brush anymore. The brushing experience is phenomenal, but the value is considerably lower when you realize how often you'll have to pay to replace the product.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi Tim,

We are so sorry to hear you had some trouble with your Quips.

We understand your concern that 3 family members are having similar issues, but we have been shipping Quip's for over three years to hundreds of thousands of members and can assure you there are no defects that could be causing something like this (as we would not be able to operate if there were).

We can assure you that our handles are thoroughly tested and, as per our help exchange, the only way we have been able to replicate the damage that you had experienced is by removing the brush head incorrectly.

As per our warranty, we cover you for the life of your refill plan for any manufacturing defects. While this damage is not a manufacturing defect, we can see our team had assisted with two free replacements for you. As a courtesy to a long time customer, we can see that they had also offered an exclusive discount to order a new Quip for the third brush that had been broken.

We do apologize for any misunderstanding, and our team is always available to help with any questions regarding the maintenance of your Quip and can help with your fellow family members directly to try and look into what may be causing this.

Ineffective and cheaply made

By Jeff Meno, Midland, MI, Verified Reviewer

I had high hopes of getting fresh heads every 3 months and enjoying an Oral B type experience which I was used to.

The brush vibrates but does little else; the cleaning is still done manually with no real sonic benefits. The plastic version (which was still pricey comparatively) is cheaply made and stopped working after 3 months.

The marketing is great, the execution not so much.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Apr 1, 2017

Hi, Jeff!

Please excuse us using parts of a standard response here. It is truly a common and damaging misconception that we often need to address, to ensure that people do not have the wrong idea about what makes a great toothbrush.

Unfortunately, your comments touch a worrying and damaging misconception, caused by big brand advertising, that an electric toothbrush "does the work for you." Also, that an electric toothbrush should be used differently from a manual one, and that the mode or power they are set at is what affects its quality or effectiveness.

This misconception is the very reason we started Quip! The truth is, all toothbrushes (manual, rotating, vibrating) are capable of the same quality clean if used correctly, and all should be used in the same way!

To brush properly, all types of toothbrushes should be moved tooth to tooth, gently, and slowing wiggling the bristles around the gum area of each tooth, for 2 minutes twice a day. Rotating, and vibrating toothbrushes do not change this habit, or magically remove the need to do this. They just give extra help by allowing the bristles to reach tough places like inside the gum and between gaps. Most of all, they give a fresher feeling that is more rewarding and makes people use electrical toothbrushes more often.

So the level of movement, or vibration does not determine your oral health, the way you use them does.

The reason other brands like to place emphasis that "power=effectiveness" is because it is easier and faster for them to sell you their highest models if consumers think they have to do no work. The more powerful, the more expensive they are which means its more money in their pockets. This is such a damaging line of advertising, and we are fighting hard against it.

We designed Quip to provide proper brushing tips, tools that guide and enhance this brushing, and services that automate crucial other aspects like proper upkeep of bristles and visiting the dentist on time. In short, we make a better oral care routine more simple, affordable and enjoyable.

As you will read on ADA and Consumer Reports website, the best brush has nothing to do with the amount of power it has, but personal preference. Whichever brush inspires, and guides you to brush the right way is the right one for you. We hope you give Quip another try one day, but if not, we just hope you are brushing the right way with whichever brush you prefer.

To address your other comment, we can assure you Quip (which is made by the same manufacturers as some of the big brand brushes) is far from being cheaply made. Of course, the slim, lightweight nature may feel different than your usual heavier larger brush, but all Quips (and especially the metal handle variety) are made by the best in the business, using the best in design and engineering. We do understand this also comes down to personal preference.

We hope this helps explain a little more about our approach, and oral care products in general!

Worst toothbrush ever

By Erwin Razer, San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

The toothbrush a) doesn't brush well, b) breaks really quickly, and c) naturally gets really disgusting since there are so many hard to wash silly components. I paid for a whole year and cancelled my subscription before the year was up because I couldn't stand using the product for a day longer.

Save your money and get another toothbrush. After I canceled, they kept charging me for a few more months, and when I figured that out, they refused to refund me. Awful experience.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Jan 9, 2018

Hi Erwin!

We can't find an account or support ticket under your name, so please do email help@getquip.com

We are so sorry to hear you did not enjoy your Quip. As we mention in our materials, and your dentist will tell you, the key to maintaining good oral health is solely based on your technique and routine. (A brush cannot "brush well instead not being able to be "used well". We designed Quip to help people brush better). This is a misconception we are trying to correct, and our dental team will be happy to expand further, should you have any questions.

We can assure Quip does not break easily, as we cover all Quips for the life of their plan, and for the first year of having your Quip even if without a plan. (We have hundreds of thousands of happy customers for 3 years). Our team at help@getquip.com are always happy to help out with any trouble you are experiencing.

Quip's design is the most seamless on the market, specifically designed to repel water/toothpaste and stop it building up. We will also be keen to hear which part you are mentioning is getting dirty, so we can see why and how this is happening to help.

The only way for a refill order to generate in our system is if there is an active refill plan in your account. A refill confirmation email is always sent out as soon as a refill has been generated to allow for any cancellations before it is shipped out, and you can cancel a refill at any time in your profile area, or again by emailing help@getquip.com

We are so sorry if any of this information was missed, and thank you for giving Quip a try!

Autoship scammers

By Michael C., Verified Reviewer

I have canceled my "autoship" with this company two times, and still get notifications that they're shipping my refill and see them billing my credit card anyway. I had to go back into their account online and do it again, after THEY reactivated my account and NOT me.

When I wrote to them, I got the standard canned reply "you canceled after it was already shipped." The nerve! I canceled it after they reactivated my account without my knowledge, and they're trying to play this little timing game with me to say they won't give me back my money.

NEVER again will I do business with this shady and disreputable company. I should have known when there is no way to call them and they refuse to list any kind of telephone contact for them. Everything is email and postal mail. Red flag! They do NOT want to talk to people, they just want your credit card information and to knife you down the road.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

About the same as a $5 battery powered toothbrush

By MB, Salt Lake City, UT, Verified Reviewer

At a premium price, you'd expect to get something "more". Higher quality. At the very least, better. I found Quip to be none of these. It was about on par with the cheap battery powered toothbrushes that you'd find at the supermarket.

There is nothing extraordinary about this product that justifies a premium price. Nothing.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Apr 1, 2017

Hi MB,

We are sorry to hear you found Quip to be anything but high quality. However, Quip is not made in the same facilities, using the same parts, processes, and engineering as some of the top brushes on the market, but the design is custom from the ground up. Also, the materials used, in many cases, are far more premium than anything on the market.

We understand that to some, size and weight matters, and so the perception of something smaller and more lightweight being cheaper can stand. Personal preference is important in oral care. We are sorry to hear that Quip was not to your personal preferences.

With that being said, one of the main reasons people love Quip is due to its high quality, premium design and attention to detail. Particularly, the metal handle version, which adds a level of quality above any toothbrush out there.

But again, personal preference is just that, and we are sorry to hear Quip was not to your liking!

Disappointing product; distasteful customer service

By Hal, Cleveland, OH, Verified Reviewer

I was so excited to buy into Quip's "simplified oral routine," but I ended up disappointed with the product and frustrated with customer service.

My fiancé and I bought our Quips together. At first, we found the results not particularly impressive, but minimally acceptable. They really didn't do any better than our old $4 disposable battery-operated vibrating toothbrushes, and I felt like the bristles were much too hard. In fact, the only improvement was the timed vibration feature.

We agreed that we'd continue to give them a chance, but then my fiancé's electronic function stopped working after about a month, and mine stopped a couple of weeks later.

It took us weeks to get a hold of a company representative. Their phone lines weren't manned, and no one responded to our phone messages or emails. Finally, a representative responded and refused a return/refund, but said I could send them in for repair at my own expense. By this point, we really didn't want to sink any more money into them.

Good companies usually stand by their products and allow you a return or refund if the product doesn't live up to their promises, but Quip didn't. Had they offered me a return or refund after this process, I would have written my bad experience off as variable personal preference, and I wouldn't have taken the time to write negative reviews.

My advice is, don't buy from companies who don't stick by their own products.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

May 7, 2017

Hi, Hal!

We are sorry you didn't love your Quip, although it does sound like there are one or two misunderstandings with our simple replacement process, as well as the toothbrush's role in regards to improving your oral health.

Whether a toothbrush is $4, $40 or $400, they do not in themselves "do better" than one another. The only way they can produce better results is if they inspire you, and guide you to brush better. The movements or functions themselves are not what improve your oral health, but you brushing better is what will.

So you should choose a brush that helps you brush gently. Brush tooth by tooth for a complete two minutes, two times a day, and it helps to replace the brush head every three months. At Quip, we focused our features on ensuring these crucial good brushing habits were made more simple, affordable, and enjoyable without making people believe they have to spend lots of money on features they don't need.

As you will read on the ADA website and consumer reports (or ask your dentist), the best brush for you simply comes down to which you enjoy using the most. So for you, as long as it has soft bristles! If you were simply not enjoying Quip like others then maybe it was not the brush for you. But if you did enjoy it, then it was likely helping you brush better and hopefully improving your oral health!

We are sorry to hear you felt the bristles were hard, although we can assure you Quip uses the same soft bristles and bristle design as many big brands on the market (sourced and assembled in the same facilities).

We are extremely sorry to hear you had an issue. To have one is rare enough, but to hear of two is incredibly strange.

Without knowing your whole name, or order number, we cannot see your help ticket history. We can assure you that all email support tickets are answered in 7.5 hours on average, and 15 hours less than the global average, and all by 6 pm each evening (EST time). If you did not experience this, then there is a chance our responses to your emails were landing in your promotions or spam folder. It sounds like you may have discovered that since you were helped out eventually.

We cover Quip for the life of your plan (or one year without a plan), and so we can assure you, you would have been offered a full replacement whatever the cause. We usually only require three photographs (no mailing in) for a replacement, unless a very strange issue we cannot identify in photo form, at which point we send you a free shipping label (at our expense, not yours).

We can assure you we stand by our products for life which is why, unlike other brands in the oral care space, cover your Quip for life with free replacements and replacement shipping! We also offer 30-day (60 brushes) return policy for your Quip, if you are not happy.

We are sorry there was any confusion, as our warranty, on-site instructions, and help emails are very clear about this process and coverage.

Sorry once again, to hear of your negative experience. We would love to look into your ticket further if you can provide your whole name.

$55 toothbrush stopped working after 5 weeks

By Becca, Verified Reviewer

I've had the toothbrush for 5 weeks. This morning, I pressed the button and nothing happened. I pressed the button 25 more times and nothing happened. I spent $55 on a toothbrush and it lasted FIVE WHOLE WEEKS. Is this some kind of joke? I've used the $6 disposable electric toothbrushes for years, and not one of them has ever stopped working.

I just filed a complaint with Quip, but after reading these comments, I assume they are going to ask for photos. How about a video of it NOT working?

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Sep 24, 2017

Hi Becca!

So sorry to hear you had an issue. We have been shipping Quip to hundreds of thousands of people over the last two years, so we hope you can understand that you and the 20 others on here are a small list that has, unfortunately, had an issue. Luckily your lifetime guarantee (if you are on a plan, which it sounds like you are) has you covered and we can't wait to help!

We actually don't have a $55 toothbrush model. Quip plastic brushes start at $25 and the premium metal options at $40. It sounds like you may have chosen to prepay for a metal handle plus a whole year of refills for the $55.

As mentioned, issues are extremely rare, so like any company, we need to make sure we understand what has happened otherwise, we will not know how to fix it properly. Most companies ask you to send your product back for inspection, but we know that can be a hassle, so we instead ask you a couple of questions and for a photo. We have found that most of the time issues come from accidental misuse or misunderstanding, meaning we can often fix remotely and, more importantly, can ensure the issue never happens again.

We can't wait to get you back with a working Quip!

Barely vibrates. Does it work?

By B Kennedy, Medford, MA, Verified Reviewer

I bought this Quip Toothbrush for my wife. It BARELY vibrates! Is this the way its supposed to work? Because it's SEEMS that it's not strong enough to move an ant! It had great reviews, but does it work? Does not seem to clean.

Has anyone else experienced this same problem, or is this one simply defective?

She's not happy, and I have not bought one for myself because this does NOT appear to work as one would expect.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Jan 9, 2018

Hi B. Kennedy,

Quip uses sensitive vibrations to help with providing a thorough, yet, non-damaging clean. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about oral care that we are trying to correct. One of the most habit damaging is “the more power, the better the clean.” There is actually no difference in how well a toothbrush can clean your teeth between a manual, gently vibrating, vigorously vibrating or rotating toothbrush. If they are all being used correctly (and have soft bristles), it comes down to which one helps you brush better, and that is mainly down to personal preference.

As we mention in our materials, the key to maintaining good oral health is solely based on your technique and routine. Electric brushes are recommended by dentists because they help encourage and guide better brushing. At Quip, we know that even making a small improvement to your habits will have a fundamentally larger effect on your oral health than any change in movement or power ever could.

With that said, we certainly cannot speak to personal preference. The best brush for you is one that encourages you to brush 2 times a day for a full 2 minutes.

We thank you for giving Quip a try!

Don’t fall for the aesthetics of a toothbrush

By Jaclyn DeSantis, Ojai, CA, Verified Reviewer

I have gum issues so my dentist told me I should get a Sonicare or vibrating toothbrush to help massage and stimulate my gums. All of the ones she recommended came large, bulky, and were unattractive units that would take up half my bathroom counter space.

Thanks to social media algorithms spying on my shopping, an advertisement for Quip promptly popped up on Instagram. I was immediately drawn to the aesthetics and compactness of this design. As many other reviewers have already stated, these are the only positive things about this toothbrush. What a complete WASTE of money and plastic. The toothbrush doesn’t even vibrate, it simply makes a vibrating noise. I think I even do a poorer job of brushing because of the way the toothbrush is designed.

Not much else to say except for it’s such a total waste that I felt compelled to warn others.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Jan 16, 2018

Hi Jaclyn!

As your dentist will tell you, the effectiveness of any toothbrush comes down to how it is used, not the features it has. Dentists recommend electric toothbrushes because they help people brush better (softer, longer, with better technique) not because their movements magically negate the need for good brushing (as the ads want you to believe).

Quip uses the same nylon bristles, motor, sensitive sonic mode of vibration, and even manufactured with other popular leading brands in the industry. There will be no difference in the way your Quip itself brushes your teeth.

If they are all being used correctly (and have soft bristles), they will all "clean" perfectly, we just designed quip to help the entire brushing routine and technique for a better clean.

We cannot speak to personal preference. The best brush for you is most often the one you enjoy most, we are sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your Quip.

Thanks for giving Quip a try!
