Poor design, customer service asking too much

By Christopher Carter, Georgia, Verified Reviewer

I bought one for my wife and I and all was good the first couple of weeks. We both had failures when the toothbrush would no longer turn on or in some cases turn off. The design did not promote a good connection.

Customer service at Quip was friendly, but not very helpful considering they wanted us to take lots of pictures and return our toothbrushes before they would send out new ones. I feel sorry for the customer service team because they have to support a flimsy and flawed design. I gave up, told them to keep everything including my prepaid subscription because they made it too much of a hassle to get a refund or a working toothbrush.

Do not expect long-term use of this product. Sonicare and Oral-B are the way to go. You are not saving money with Quip, just adding frustration.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Sep 24, 2017

Hi Christopher!

So sorry to hear you had an issue. As we mentioned above, we have been shipping Quip to hundreds of thousands of people over the last two years. We hope you can understand that you and the 20 others on this review page are among a small list of people that have, unfortunately, (disappointingly for us) had an issue. Luckily your lifetime guarantee (if you are on a plan which it sounds like you are) have you covered!

We hope you can understand that we would not be able to support a lifetime guarantee if we had identified any design flaws over the past two years, but we appreciate your patience as we work through and identify your issue.

As mentioned, issues are extremely rare, so like any company we need to make sure we understand what has happened, otherwise, we will not know how to fix it properly. Most companies ask you to send your product back for inspection, but we know that can be a hassle, so we instead ask you a couple of questions and for a photo.

We have found that most of the time issues come from accidental misuse or misunderstanding, meaning we can often fix remotely and, more importantly, can ensure the issue never happens again. If it's a random manufacturing defect, then we are still able to help even faster.

It is strange to hear you were asked to return your Quip's as we would only do this if you were unable or unwilling to send photos. If this was not the case, please do email our support team and we can look into why that was said to you.

We are sorry our help team was not clear enough on the process that we actually designed to make support faster by using one email, not slower.

Not as good as the other electric tootbrushes

By Larissa Lazaro, New York, Verified Reviewer

I've been using Sonicare for a long time and needed to replace it. So I thought Quip is a good deal for the price of $45 versus Sonicare's of $180+.

After trying it for the first time, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for! I think it's good for people who are using a manual toothbrush, but if you've been an electric brush user, this might not be for you; it will be very disappointing. It's not as powerful as the other electric toothbrushes out there.

So I'm going back to spending money to get a new Sonicare. It is for the sake of my teeth after all.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Hi Larissa,

As we say below, and on our website before purchasing, (and as your dentist will tell you too), the effectiveness of any toothbrush comes down to how it is used, not the power mode it is set to.

Quip uses the same nylon bristles, motor, and even manufacturer as other popular leading brands in the industry, so there will be no difference in the way your Quip itself brushes your teeth. The core thing that affects your oral health is how you use a toothbrush, diet, and genetics.

Unfortunately, there are many dangerous misconceptions in oral care that we are trying to correct, such as the idea that whether a toothbrush is manual, gently vibrating, vigorously vibrating or rotating toothbrush is what effects your oral health. If they are all being used correctly (and have soft bristles), they will all "clean" perfectly.

The truth is, all toothbrushes should be used in almost in the exact the same way, gently brushing tooth by tooth, focusing on the gum line area, making sure to cover the whole mouth. Unfortunately, many believe that manual brushes should be used with "big, strong, sweeping, brushing motions" and electric brushes "don't need to be wiggled around at all." It is these misconceptions that can cause big issues, alongside the other major issues that most people are not brushing twice a day, for two minutes, or change brush heads when they are worn out.

Of course, we cannot speak to personal preference. The best brush for you is one that encourages you to brush 2 times a day, for a full 2 minutes.

Thanks for giving Quip a try!

Poor product, worse customer service.

By S R, San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

This company. Jesus.

Let's start at the beginning. Quip arrives! Yay! Cool new electric toothbrush! Look at me being a good adult, and taking care of my teeth.

Six months later: Quip won't turn off when I push the button. I finally get it to turn off, and it never comes back to life. I email Quip customer service thinking, "this is a hip internet startup, I have no doubt that this will be a simple, painless process."

I get what is clearly a form response, that sums up as follows: Oh, I'm sorry! Maybe it's your fault. Have you tried any of these relatively simple steps to make sure it's not your fault? If it's STILL not working, send us several pictures of our malfunctioning product. At this point, I was like, "Ok cool. They're just covering their bases." I tried all the things (to no avail), and then sent back the requested pictures, thinking it would soon be resolved.

Oh no. Their next email asked me to send the damn thing back to them. THEIR product broke after less than a year of use. Why do I have to go out of my way to send it back to them? They (kindly, I guess) send you a shipping label that you have to use within 30 days. Now at this time, I was two days away from going on a month long trip. I certainly did not have time to do it before I left, and it expired before I returned.

When I asked for a new one (because they had sent it at an inconvenient time), they told me no, but I could pay to send it in myself. I was getting fairly annoyed by this point, so I angrily put it off for a while. Meanwhile, they kept sending me replacement brush heads, and every time one arrived in the mail, I was reminded of how shitty and annoying they were.

Fast forward some time, and I finally paid to send their own stupid, broken product back to them, so I could finally get a functioning one.

Two months later, still nothing. No response from them, no replacement toothbrush, nothing. So I emailed them again, trying to be as calm as possible, explaining the situation. At the end of the email, I suggested that if they were unwilling or unable to send me a new toothbrush that they simply refund my money and take back their stupid replacement brush heads that are sitting idly in my bathroom cabinet - useless (I was marginally more civil in my email).

And the response I got? Another form email (as they all have been) saying "send us the tracking number, and we'll look into it." Good lord. Oh, and they also canceled my subscription, which for some reason made me even more annoyed.

I have responded now with a photo of the receipt from UPS, including the tracking number. I have little hope that I will ever receive a replacement toothbrush, and I am left with little more than frustration (and useless replacement brush heads) for my trouble.

Worst $50 I have ever spent.

TLDR: If your Quip breaks, immediately cancel your subscription and give up (or just use it as a non-electric toothbrush I guess). They will make you jump through SEVERAL hoops, and there is no guarantee that you will get a replacement for your trouble.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi SR,

It looks like we sent a pre-paid return label in September 2016, and our team provided a return address with RMA number once that label expired to further help. Unfortunately, your return still hasn't been received, and the tracking number provided does not register with any shipping providers.

As our team has already let you know, we're happy to send a replacement right away once there is any movement with your tracking number and receiving your Quip. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and we're always here to help with any additional questions at help@getquip.com.

Nice looking but not effective,

By NJ, New York, Verified Reviewer

I was really happy with my toothbrush for the first three months after which it stopped working as well as it had been. I emailed the company to inform them of my issues and they were apologetic but unhelpful. It's a great website and idea but sadly the product still needs a lot of work.

I waited foe over two months to receive my tooth brush (the company emailed me to apologize for the delay, apparently they were in the process of improving the heads) that then only lasted three months. Total waste of time and money.

Hi NJ,

It sounds like you had an issue that was caused by the removal or changing of the brush head?

Quip covers your brush for life, and we ship replacements heads or brushes for the few that need them instantly.

At no point in 2016 should you have needed to wait for two months (let alone two days) for a brush head! It sounds like there was more to your case. Could you let us know your order number, or some other identifying factor so we can better answer to your experience?

Thanks so much!

Quip Toothbrush

By Miguel Flores, Miami, FL, Verified Reviewer

I purchased three toothbrushes for Christmas. Once I received the replacement brushes three months later, all three brushes did not stay on the toothbrush. Do NOT buy this product. Once you replace the brushes, they fall off. They refuse to provide a return. Do not buy; it's a cheap product.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

May 1, 2017

Hi Miguel, first and foremost, we are sorry to hear that you had an issue with your Quips!

When an issue like this happens, there is always the chance of a rare defect. However, if it has happened more than once, we need to ensure that it's not an issue caused by a misunderstanding of how the Quip brush head is removed or how the product is used. It is very rare to have one defect, let alone three.

We can see a considerable amount of back-and-forth between you and our team. We are trying to help you with your replacements for a long time. It seemed they were struggling to ascertain which brush had an issue. At no point did anyone refuse a replacement, as we cover your Quips for one year, or for the life of your plan. Our team was only trying to help.

We can assure that Quip is far from a cheap product to make, and it is made using the same materials, manufacturers, testing, and procedures as some of the biggest brands in the world.

We are deeply sorry for your issue. Whatever the cause is, we look forward to continuing to help you in the email conversation we currently have open.

Waste of money, time and energy

By Julie Baron, New York, Verified Reviewer

I ordered this toothbrush with all the same thoughts in mind as the other reviews, and I even recommended it to my sister who bought 2! She ordered it with $10 extra for 2-3 days priority because she was leaving the country and guess what? It's been 4 days and still no toothbrush, and she has left the country! Now they won't even refund the $10 she paid for them to send it to her in 2-3 days.

Bad, false advertising because now they don't want to refund my sister the $10. I will be returning her toothbrushes! I've already complained to the Better Business Bureau!

Now, I got my toothbrush and started using it and wow, what a BAD toothbrush. It barely vibrates, and it doesn't remove the stains on my teeth that my own Sonicare removes. I will be returning this and definitely not recommending it to ANYONE! DO NOT BUY unless you want to waste your time and energy and money.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Oct 18, 2017

Hi Julie,

We are so sorry to hear you had some trouble with your shipment. As we state directly on our shipping page during checkout, priority shipping is an estimate of 2-3 business days. This is also included on our help page which is available both before and after ordering.

We can see you had placed your order the Sunday before Columbus Day which is a postal holiday so your order was picked up on the first business day back (Tuesday). We, unfortunately, cannot control the end delivery time as this will rely on the shipping carrier directly. We can also see that our help team refunded your $10 priority shipping for you because your package had arrived on the fourth business day.

Regarding the vibrations of Quip, unfortunately, there are many misconceptions in oral care that we are trying to correct. One of the worst is “the more power, the better the clean”. There is actually no difference in how well a toothbrush can clean your teeth between a manual, gently vibrating, vigorously vibrating or rotating toothbrush if they are all being used correctly and have soft bristles.

As we mention on our website and in our welcome materials, the key to maintaining good oral health is solely based on your technique, routine and electric brushes are recommended by dentists because they help encourage and guide better brushing.

We certainly cannot speak to personal preference, as the best brush for you is one that encourages you to brush two times a day, for a full two minutes with fresh soft bristles.

We are sorry to hear that Quip didn't work out for you, and thank you for giving it a try.

This sucks and I can't get a refund!

By Troy Porter, North Carolina, Verified Reviewer

I got a Quip Toothbrush for Christmas and was completely disappointed with the whole thing. I asked for a refund, but because it was ordered for me more than 30 days prior to my receiving it, that was denied. So what you have is a company that refuses to stand behind its' product and refuses to acknowledge that the product is inferior.

Do you want a Quip? I'll give you the cheaper, and perhaps better, solution: buy a cheap little vibrator from Amazon (of course they sell them), and tape a regular toothbrush to it. Voila! You have a Quip for less than 10 bucks.

Don't say you weren't warned.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Jan 9, 2018

Hi Troy!

As your dentist and the ADA will tell you, the best brush for your teeth comes down to personal preference (which you enjoy the most), not what vibration frequency a brand chooses to set their brush. (We chose ours because research showed us that it was the power that people enjoyed the most.)

So we are sorry to hear that Quip was not to your liking. Quip's bought during Christmas (from the end of November) are subject to extended returns through the end of January, so please do reach out if you are looking to return!

Great toothbrush!

By Terry Pyles, Nyack, NY, Verified Reviewer

Ignore all the whiners; this is a great toothbrush. I'm a 60-something man with diabetes. I've had my fair share of dental issues due to diabetes, so I have always been very diligent in my dental hygiene routine. My dentist and periodontist both agree this toothbrush is excellent. All those complaints about how it's not powerful enough are exactly the point. You don't need supersonic power to brush your teeth. All that excess grinding just wears away the enamel, which does not regenerate.

Think scouring powder on a bathtub. What you need is a soft brush applied with minimal pressure, assuming you are also practicing good flossing and mouthwash habits. So if you want to spend a hundred bucks or more to grind away your teeth, be my guest. If you want a very good brush for a great price, then try a Quip.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Room for improvement for sure

By Nick C., Connecticut, Verified Reviewer

As far as the product, I have only had it for 30 days, so I will have to revisit this sight in 90 days and share my thoughts based on a meaningful time frame.

That aside, as far as referring others, let’s just say that will not happen until Quip addresses their customer service area.

A great product with poor customer service will not win in the long run. Further, you should review their return policy, it will tell you a lot as to how management feels about their product. Returns coupled with no attached shipping charge tells you they have faith and confidence in their product - returns where you have to pay for shipping, let’s just say in today’s internet shopping world and those sites I visit, I cannot remember when I had to pay for return shipping.

Now you may ask why I wanted to return a Quip order. Without getting into specifics let’s just say it has to do with the company's absurd referral program. Granted I may have made a mistake in terms of the referral process, which in the end would have cost them two brush heads (about $10), but in the end whoever reads this review may think twice before they click on the order button, and that may be only one person or it could very well be hundreds. If the later, well, customer service may have saved the company $10 today but who knows how many sales were lost based on my experience.

P.S. I suspect Quip may have someone on their staff write a counter review phrasing customer service, that said I suspect I am not alone and maybe others will post the same. Quip, you may want to give further thought as to the confidence you have in your product and if you believe it is the best on the market, your return policy should reflect the same. I will be back in 60 days with a product review.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi Nick,

We are sorry to hear you were not satisfied with your customer experience!

We completely stand by our product which is why we allow for you to try your Quip for 30 days, and if you find that it is not the right fit for you, our team can assist with a return and refund. Too weak, and bad return experience

By Linzy N., San Jose, CA, Verified Reviewer

Awful design/tech - not ready for consumers

By Mark F., Austin, TX, Verified Reviewer

It looks nice.

Bad design and poor function. The brush doesn’t really seat properly into the handle (the lip sticks up), and the natural pressure of brushing works against the direction that the brush is seated. The power button is too shallow and doesn’t have a positive feel...takes too much pressure to activate.

My brushes (the original plus the two others I’ve been sent under warranty) have worked 75% of the time and not the rest.

The design and tech are lacking here. I’m done now. Time to get something else.
