Only thing worse than the product is customer service

By Scott S., New Jersey, Verified Reviewer

I have gone through two quips - both broke within months. Customer service wants you to take photos - not sure when I signed up to be their troubleshooter. The bottom line is that the product uses defective plastic parts. Don’t listen to the customer service reps who I am sure will respond that I am at fault. This product is junk.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Incomplete order

By Amy I., Texas, Verified Reviewer

Only part of my order was filled - order arrived with no packing slip or paperwork. Company is wanting a picture of the packing slip that does not exist. Missing 3 toothbrushes. Buyer beware. Please take pictures of order and package upon opening, if your order at all. Questioning reliability and professionalism of company - seems like a scam.

Not worth the money

By Jim M., Golden, CO, Verified Reviewer

Have you bought one of the battery-operated Colgate toothbrushes for something like $6.95? This brush is a dressed up version of that. The vibration is so light you feel that you have to use it like a normal toothbrush to get anything out of it. I was hoping to have a travel version of my sonic toothbrush, but it doesn’t even come close. I would not recommend this toothbrush.

What a load of overpriced rubbish

By Joshua V., London, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

First off, ordering it from the UK, I was hit with a hefty customs charge - making it a very expensive brush.

However, it is the brush itself that I have a problem with. It is rubbish.

It barely vibrates, in fact, I really don't see the point of this at all, as you have to use it like a normal brush. I wanted it as a travel alternative to my Braun, but in fact, I should have bought a disposable brush - it does a better job for less than $5/£4

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Don’t buy!

By Cathy S., St. Louis, MO, Verified Reviewer

The top gets stuck where you basically have to break it in half to get it off. And the subscription feature is broken and never lets you cancel. And customer service never replies, so they keep charging you. Don’t use it! You can get a basic battery toothbrush for $3 that works the same but you don’t have to deal with terrible customer service.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

About the same as a $5 battery powered toothbrush

By MB, Salt Lake City, UT, Verified Reviewer

At a premium price, you'd expect to get something "more". Higher quality. At the very least, better. I found Quip to be none of these. It was about on par with the cheap battery powered toothbrushes that you'd find at the supermarket.

There is nothing extraordinary about this product that justifies a premium price. Nothing.

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Hi MB,

We are sorry to hear you found Quip to be anything but high quality. However, Quip is not made in the same facilities, using the same parts, processes, and engineering as some of the top brushes on the market, but the design is custom from the ground up. Also, the materials used, in many cases, are far more premium than anything on the market.

We understand that to some, size and weight matters, and so the perception of something smaller and more lightweight being cheaper can stand. Personal preference is important in oral care. We are sorry to hear that Quip was not to your personal preferences.

With that being said, one of the main reasons people love Quip is due to its high quality, premium design and attention to detail. Particularly, the metal handle version, which adds a level of quality above any toothbrush out there.

But again, personal preference is just that, and we are sorry to hear Quip was not to your liking!

Ineffective and cheaply made

By Jeff Meno, Midland, MI, Verified Reviewer

I had high hopes of getting fresh heads every 3 months and enjoying an Oral B type experience which I was used to.

The brush vibrates but does little else; the cleaning is still done manually with no real sonic benefits. The plastic version (which was still pricey comparatively) is cheaply made and stopped working after 3 months.

The marketing is great, the execution not so much.

Hi, Jeff!

Please excuse us using parts of a standard response here. It is truly a common and damaging misconception that we often need to address, to ensure that people do not have the wrong idea about what makes a great toothbrush.

Unfortunately, your comments touch a worrying and damaging misconception, caused by big brand advertising, that an electric toothbrush "does the work for you." Also, that an electric toothbrush should be used differently from a manual one, and that the mode or power they are set at is what affects its quality or effectiveness.

This misconception is the very reason we started Quip! The truth is, all toothbrushes (manual, rotating, vibrating) are capable of the same quality clean if used correctly, and all should be used in the same way!

To brush properly, all types of toothbrushes should be moved tooth to tooth, gently, and slowing wiggling the bristles around the gum area of each tooth, for 2 minutes twice a day. Rotating, and vibrating toothbrushes do not change this habit, or magically remove the need to do this. They just give extra help by allowing the bristles to reach tough places like inside the gum and between gaps. Most of all, they give a fresher feeling that is more rewarding and makes people use electrical toothbrushes more often.

So the level of movement, or vibration does not determine your oral health, the way you use them does.

The reason other brands like to place emphasis that "power=effectiveness" is because it is easier and faster for them to sell you their highest models if consumers think they have to do no work. The more powerful, the more expensive they are which means its more money in their pockets. This is such a damaging line of advertising, and we are fighting hard against it.

We designed Quip to provide proper brushing tips, tools that guide and enhance this brushing, and services that automate crucial other aspects like proper upkeep of bristles and visiting the dentist on time. In short, we make a better oral care routine more simple, affordable and enjoyable.

As you will read on ADA and Consumer Reports website, the best brush has nothing to do with the amount of power it has, but personal preference. Whichever brush inspires, and guides you to brush the right way is the right one for you. We hope you give Quip another try one day, but if not, we just hope you are brushing the right way with whichever brush you prefer.

To address your other comment, we can assure you Quip (which is made by the same manufacturers as some of the big brand brushes) is far from being cheaply made. Of course, the slim, lightweight nature may feel different than your usual heavier larger brush, but all Quips (and especially the metal handle variety) are made by the best in the business, using the best in design and engineering. We do understand this also comes down to personal preference.

We hope this helps explain a little more about our approach, and oral care products in general!

Not much more than a toothbrush.

By Eric, WI, Verified Reviewer

The Quip Toothbrush is made well, lasts long on a single battery, and gives a decent brushing. That said, it really doesn't do any more than a manual toothbrush. It has surprising power for such a small package, but you can't use the vibration to brush your teeth alone like you can with other brands such as Braun or Sonicare. You still have to brush like you would with any other manual brush, so I don't really see where the advantage is. I discontinued within a few months.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi, Eric!

First of all, thanks for giving Quip a try. Unfortunately, your comments touch on a "worrying and damaging" misconception, caused by big brand advertising that an electric toothbrush "does the work for you," or that an electric toothbrush should be used differently than a manual one.

This misconception is the very reason we started Quip! The truth is, all toothbrushes (manual, rotating, vibrating) are capable of the same quality cleaning if it used correctly, and all of them should be used in the same way!

To brush properly, no matter which type, you should be move from tooth to tooth, gently, slowing and wiggling the bristles around the gum area for each tooth, two minutes twice a day. Rotating, and vibrating toothbrushes do not change this habit, or magically remove the need to do this. Instead, it just provides extra help to get the bristles where they need to go (inside the gum, tooth gap). Most of all, it gives a fresher feeling that is more rewarding, and people are likely to brush more often and take more care of their teeth.

So the level of movement or vibration does not determine your oral health, the way you use them does.

We aren't able to observe how you brush, but we would recommend you taking your Sonicare (or Quip) to your next dental visit to show them how you do. They will give you the best advice, making sure you are doing it right. You certainly should not just be moving the brush head to each tooth and leaving it there.

The reason other brands make it seem like you “can just leave it there” is because it is easier and faster for them to sell you the highest models. The big brands are making more money by advertising and misinforming consumers that they don't have to put extra effort into brushing because their brushes are more powerful. It is such a damaging line of advertising, and we are fighting hard against it, but we also used to believe it!

We designed Quip to provide proper brushing tips, tools that guide and enhance brushing and deliver services that are crucial in other aspects like proper upkeep of bristles and visiting the dentist on time. In short, we make a better oral care routine more simple, affordable and enjoyable.

As you will read on ADA and Consumer Reports website, the best brush has nothing to do with the amount of power it has, but personal preference. Whichever brush inspires and guides you to brush the right way is the right one for you. We hope you give Quip another try one day, but if not, we just hope you are brushing the right way with whichever brush you prefer.

We hope this helps!

After using for over a year, I developed three cavities after having none for more than eight years

By Britt, Arizona, Verified Reviewer

For reference, I brush and floss my teeth every day religiously. I take oral health seriously.

After going to the dentist a few times, she started noticing an extreme amount of plaque build-up in my gums, even though I floss every single day. She was surprised to hear me say I floss so regularly because almost all my gums were bleeding as well. For the first time in over eight years, I will need three fillings, costing almost $300 after insurance, because this toothbrush isn't doing a good job.

I wouldn't recommend it at all!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Apr 1, 2017

Hi Britt!

We are sorry to hear your brushing routine deteriorated over the past year, leading to these issues :(.

We hope that your hygienist will have discussed with you that a toothbrush cannot cause cavities, or in itself, fight cavities alone. The effectiveness of any toothbrush (or flossing device, which we do not currently sell) comes down to how it is used.

We designed Quip to make using a toothbrush the right way easier! But it sounds like it had the opposite effect for you :(.

It is hard to give advice without knowing if you came from a manual toothbrush, but here would be what a hygienist would usually discuss (but please consult with your own first).

1) Quip is identical in size, shape, bristle design and more to all manual toothbrushes, just with the added vibrating bristles and 2-minute timer. If you came from a manual toothbrush, it would not be possible for Quip itself to be worse at cleaning. With that said, professionals do sometimes see on rare occasions that people start to brush differently/worse when switching to an electric because they believe it "does the work for them" and change their technique. An electric toothbrush and a manual toothbrush should be used in almost the same exact way. Going tooth to tooth, gentle wiggling the bristles focusing around the gum line area. Sometimes people switch to electric and drastically alter their technique when they should not, so we want to ensure that this is not the case for the next toothbrush you choose.

2) If switching from another electric then the above is also often the case. A change in routine or technique is going to affect your oral health drastically (but the design or power of a toothbrush will not, especially with one like Quip, which is made in the same way as others). So we would certainly recommend discussing with your dental professionals if you feel you changed anything about your routine that might have led to this, as we would hate for this to continue to happen in the future!

While we designed Quip to make better brushing easier, all mouths are different and personal preference is one of the most important aspects when choosing a toothbrush (check out consumer reports on toothbrushes). So we are sorry to hear that Quip wasn't for you and hope to see your oral health improve as you move forward!

Thanks for giving Quip a try :).

Poor customer service

By Andres Casademont, Philadelphia, PA, Verified Reviewer

When you are dealing with a website service, and they do not provide a call in number nor provide tracking numbers, what do you do? It is annoying that I have to send an email and wait for their response to something I should be able to see when I sign in.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi Andreas!

We provide a tracking number via email (with a clickable track button) the second your order ships, as well as provide basics tracking number on our website in your profile area.

We answer all emails within an average of 8 hours and are available seven days a week. We pride ourselves on our customer service and are sorry that not having a direct phone line (yet) as a growing startup, led you to feel you were receiving poor customer service.

We hope you enjoy your brush :).

Disappointing

By Isla Flores, California, Verified Reviewer

I'm pretty disappointed in my Quip. I didn't expect it to have the power that my Sonicare toothbrush has, but the head literally doesn't vibrate at all itself. What does vibrate is the handle where the batteries are. Any feeling of vibration in the brush head itself just comes from the handle vibrating in your hand.

Also, the holder, which is supposed to stick to your mirror, always falls within a few minutes. I heard my Quip fall to the floor both times I tried to store it in its holder on the bathroom mirror. The design of the toothbrush itself is nice, I ordered the copper color, and it is very pretty. I wish the brush actually vibrated. Now I have a very pretty $50 toothbrush that does little more for my teeth than your average drugstore toothbrush.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Jul 12, 2017

Hi Isla! It sounds like there may be an issue with your Quip or how it is being handled because we can assure you the bristles are vibrating, and they are the same sensitive vibration level as many premium brush modes. Could you please email help@getquip.com so we can help you out?

We will also be able to help you with the cover. Again, the cover is extremely sticky when used properly (check out "how to" on the removable sticker that comes on it, the welcome card and getquip.com/setup). So it sounds like it may be being put on a noncompatible surface.

We look forward to helping!
