The company claims that their product improves sleep as well as many prescription sleeping pills and that it is drug-free, non-habit-forming, NSF-certified, and gluten, dairy, and GMO-free.
According to the product website, Som’s founders Abdul Khan, Rob Bent, John Shegerian and Christine Khan created this beverage to treat their own sleep problems, which included difficulties falling asleep and frequently waking up throughout the night.
They all struggled to find a “clean, drug-free solution that was as easy as popping open a can,” so they created one themselves with Som.

How Does Som Sleep Work?
According to the Som Sleep website, the secret to their sleep aid’s success is their unique delivery method – treating the drink like a soda. It comes in two forms: Som Original and Som Zero Sugar.
Each can of Som provides one serving. For best results, the company suggests drinking it chilled about thirty minutes before bed.
Since the beverage may leave you feeling groggy if you wake up before your body is ready, they recommend that you only take Som Sleep when you can commit eight hours to sleep. If the drink’s effects are too intense for you, you can limit your dose to half a can.
The company tells us that Som isn’t a hangover cure and that they recommend against mixing Som with other products (especially alcohol), as doing so will dilute its effects.
Which Ingredients Are in Som Sleep?
The secret to a sleep aid’s effectiveness is found in its ingredients, so let’s look closer at what you’ll consume in both varieties to see if they make sense for reducing insomnia.
The company website tells us that the beverage’s active ingredients include magnesium (40mg), vitamin B6 (2mg), and a 357mg proprietary blend of L-theanine, GABA, and 3mg of melatonin. Let’s look at the potential sleep benefits of each of these ingredients.
The National Institute of Health classifies vitamin B6 as an extremely versatile compound that plays a role in more than 100 enzyme reactions within the body. However, there’s research from the University of Adelaide that shows the vitamin increases the vividness of your dreams and potentially disturbs sleep quality.
According to WebMD, this amino acid made famous by its presence in green tea is known for treating anxiety and boosting feelings of relaxation.
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)
We found on Everyday Health that GABA plays an integral role in your body’s response to stress, and it helps control fear and anxiety responses, which consequently keeps you calmer.
According to Healthline, melatonin is a hormone your body produces naturally to signal to your brain when it’s time to sleep. Levels of melatonin rise and fall over 24-hour cycles in healthy people, and taking supplemental melatonin can help you reset your levels if you struggle to sleep. The hormone is believed safe for supplementation, and doses between 3-10 mg are considered most effective.
Psychology Today tells us that magnesium is a mineral that is associated with brain function and heart health, as well as hundreds of other physical tasks.
According to Healthline, research shows that it can quiet down the brain to help you fall asleep faster, primarily because it controls melatonin production and increases your GABA levels in the brain. While the research isn’t conclusive, there’s evidence that daily doses between 225mg-500mg can help improve sleep.
With the possible exception of vitamin B6, each active ingredient within Som shows potential for calming your brain, relieving anxiety, and promoting better quality sleep.
However, the dosage is critical, and Som’s proprietary blend doesn’t give us a good sense of how much of each ingredient is included within each serving. Likewise, the drink is listed as having just 40mg of magnesium, while our research showed most studies that demonstrated its effectiveness looked at doses between 240-500mg.
In short, we think there’s some evidence that the ingredients in Som will help you fall asleep, but the research isn’t conclusive yet, especially when you consider the concentrations we find in the beverage.

Likewise, all three products besides Som contain valerian. According to Healthline, valerian is a flowering plant whose root has been used as a treatment for insomnia for thousands of years. However, the research is inconclusive if the root helps your sleep quality beyond the placebo effect because most reports rely on subjective reporting.
At $2.50 per serving, Som is the most expensive sleep supplement we looked at. However, it might be the most accessible for many people because drinking a beverage is more of an ingrained habit than taking a traditional supplement. If you struggle to commit to other kinds of sleep aids, the ease of Som might be a selling point for you.
One critical question you’ll need to answer is whether a sleep aid even makes sense for your situation. It's best that you talk with your doctor before beginning any supplement routine- even if the ingredients are branded as natural, especially if you’re already taking prescription sleep medication.

Most of the beverage’s active ingredients show evidence from reputable studies for improving your sleep, though the doses necessary to get these results might be more than what’s found in a single serving.
Customer reviews of Som offer a mixed account of how well this product works. Some people wrote that it improved their sleep dramatically, while others felt that the drink made them feel groggy when they woke up and even made them take undesirable trips to the bathroom all night.
What sets Som apart from other supplements the most is that it’s packaged as a soda-like beverage, rather than a dietary supplement.
