What Is the Speed Razor?
Claiming to be able to completely change your shaving experience, the Speed Razor is an As Seen On TV shaving product that promises to bring you a closer shave than any other razor. The device provides a total of eight high-performance blades, with four on each side.
This dual-razor design is what permits the product to be used in a back-and-forth movement, allowing you to rub the blades along your skin while you shave. The ergonomic non-slip grip facilitates this movement, even when in the shower or bath.
The company behind the product claims that using the Speed Razor means fewer nicks from lifting and placing a blade on your body, as they say that the device is an easier alternative to traditional shavers. They also state that it is ideal for shaving the arms, legs, chest, armpits, and head. The product looks to be marketed towards both men and women.
Obviously, a device that can reliably and quickly shave away body hair without nicks while also giving you a closer shave than other razors sounds ideal, but how grounded in reality is it? Can you truly expect the product to live up to its claims?
Will a Double Sided Design Really Lead to a Closer, Faster Shave?
In the product’s commercial, we are shown the Speed Razor being used to shave in both directions; a unique feature that might indeed speed things up a bit in the bathroom. As anyone who’s ever shaved before knows, body hair grows in all directions. This could be a boon for the Speed Razor, as it’s dual direction shaving ability might be able to more effectively (and quickly) take care of hair growing in multiple directions in the same spot.
That being said, all of the examples shown in the product’s commercial include individuals using shaving cream to aid them. Why is this noteworthy? Shaving cream takes extra time to apply, so by that logic alone, the double sided design may not actually translate to a faster shave when compared to electric shavers and certain safety razors that don’t rely on shaving cream to function.
However, safety razors in particular often come with a learning curve, and what is supposed to be a quick and convenient experience can easily turn into a painful, annoying ordeal if you don’t know what you’re doing.
In addition, there’s nothing inherent about this design that would lead it to be able to shave closer than another multi-blade razor (that we can tell from a distance anyway). Instead, we see more potential for the Speed Razor to be able to get hairs that you might not otherwise be able to reach in a single pass with a traditional product, thanks to its “rubbing” motion.
Of course, without having used the product ourselves, we can’t say for certain that the Speed Razor’s unique functionality will translate to any real-world benefits. Based solely on what information we’re given, though, there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that this product can be expected to provide you the closest shave of any razor (especially when you factor in the dizzying array of options for personal grooming out there on the market today), nor is there an indication that it can do it in “half” the time it takes an ordinary razor.
Speed Razor Pricing & Return Policy
Currently, the Speed Razor is available directly from the manufacturer online for $17.99 as part of a “buy one, get one free” deal. Shipping is free, and the product comes in two different colors; blue and red. The company also offers a 4-pack replacement blade set for $9.95. We called customer service and asked if you could use any replacement blades, or if it had to be these specific ones, and they informed us that it was “not recommended.” We tried to clarify, and they reported the same answer.
As for the return policy, the terms and conditions on the website state that you have a 30-day guarantee included with all purchases, less p&h. You’ll be required to pay return shipping to get the product back to the manufacturer. To initiate a return, call customer support at 866-446-4078.
Speed Razor vs Similar Shaving Solutions
Looking around online, it becomes clear fairly quickly that the Speed Razor is, from a design perspective, a unique product relative to the other options available on the market. Although there are many different body shaving devices online, we didn’t encounter any that matched the Speed Razor’s design exactly.
In general, you have two categories of shaving products; electric and manual. With electric options, you don’t always need to use shaving cream, but this depends upon the individual product. You’ll also need to contend with batteries and chargers, whereas with a non-powered option, you only have to worry about replacing the blades as they wear down.
When searching for an effective shaving solution, ask yourself these self-guiding questions:
- Does the product feature a functionality that suits your daily rhythm well? In other words, will it enhance your daily routine and provide value?
- Is it cost effective over the long-term? Pay close attention to the price of replacement razors, as well as batteries & replacement chargers in electric models.
- Will it improve the accuracy or speed of your experience (like the Speed Razor claims to do) Being able to shave time off of your morning ritual can only mean good things for you, like carving out those extra few minutes to grab a coffee before heading into the office.
- How safe is the product overall? Is there a learning curve? It’s important to factor this in so that you know what you’re getting yourself into ahead of time.
Obviously, you might not be able to answer all of these questions before trying a particular product out for the first time. Because of this, it’s extremely important to keep the return policy in mind when considering making a purchase.
Remember, at the end of the day, you are choosing a product that you’ll need to use often, perhaps even every morning in some cases. Finding something that you are comfortable with is likely the most important factor that goes into making a choice that you’ll be happy with in the long run.
The Bottom Line: Is The Speed Razor Right For Me?
The Speed Razor claims to provide your closest shave yet, and it promises to do so faster and with fewer nicks than ordinary razors.
Without using the device ourselves, we can’t say with any certainty that it will truly provide you with “a closer shave than any other razor”, nor can we say that you won’t ever cut yourself with it (it’s still a pair of razor blades, after all).
Still, the novel design is likely worth trying out if you see the value in being able to shave in two directions at once, potentially speeding up your grooming experience in certain circumstances. You may find that you simply enjoy the back-and-forth action of shaving more than the traditional methods, and that’s okay, too.
The replacement blade pricing is comparable to many name-brand offerings, and using the device seems to be about as safe as using a traditional multi-blade razor. That said, we can foresee some degree of learning curve being involved, as the “rubbing” motion might take some getting used to at first.
As a final consideration (especially for men, but it can apply to women as well), consider that you’ll likely still need a dedicated razor for facial care as well. Although the Speed Razor could probably be used to shave your face, it’s clear from the promotional material that this is not its intended function. Certain electric shavers, however, can be utilized for both body and facial care.
If you feel as though you’d like to give the Speed Razor a shot and see how it works out for you, don’t forget to keep the 30-day return policy in mind. Also, don’t forget to leave a review below and tell other HighYa readers what you thought about your experience! It truly helps us all make better buying decisions in the end.
I placed an order for 2 Razors at buy 1 get one free, and 1 pack of replacement blades on or about the 6th of September. $24.90 was taken from my account on or about the 15th of September. On or about the 20th of September, I received a phone call from the Razor company say that the items were on back order and that I should be receiving them soon. That was the last I've heard from Speed Razor. Now it's the 14th of November, and I still haven't received my order. There is no way for me to contact Speed Razor. Will this wind up to be a $24.90 lesson or will they come through?
Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
