Can You Get Shredded Without Doing Cardio?
One of the biggest benefits claimed by the Superhero Shredding system is that it can help you get shredded without having to do any cardio. But is this even possible?
According to Shape.com, “Strength training builds lean muscle mass, which both increases your metabolism and decreases fat … so the more muscle you build, the more calories you burn on a day-to-day basis.” In addition, the article notes that some strength training exercises, such as kettleballs, can double as cardio, without having to step on the dreaded treadmill. Is Superhero Shredding Clinically Proven?
While there’s no indication that the Superhero Shredding program itself is clinically proven, the website does reference a 2010 University of Ottawa study that found, “increasing MF (meal frequency) does not promote greater body weight loss under the conditions described in the present study.”
So what were the conditions described in the study? First, the 8 obese men and 8 obese women who participated were split into 2 different groups; one that received multiple meals throughout the day (3 meals and 3 snacks), and another who only received 3 meals per day. Both groups were “subjected to the same dietary energy restriction;” e.g. they were both on a reduced calorie diet.
After 8 weeks, the study found that both groups lost about the same amount of weight, fat mass, and lean body mass, and had similar BMIs. However, appetite measurements were about the same between both groups.
Ultimately, this study is referenced to prop up the claim that eating less frequent (but larger meals) can give you the same results as eating smaller, but more frequent, meals. But outside the study, what does science have to say about this claim?
Can You Lose Weight Eating Only 2 Big Meals Per Day?
First, keep in mind that losing weight is about creating a calorie deficit. In other words, you need to consume less calories than you use each day. So, regardless of how many times you eat throughout any given day, or what you eat, you’ll need to burn off all these calories (and more) through exercise.
Second, it’s important to note that sustained weight loss can be less about how many times you eat per day, and more about the quality of the food you’re eating. Granted, the Superhero Shredding program is claimed to provide shopping lists and food guides that can help you make healthy choices.
With all of this in mind, does eating less, but larger, meals during the course of a day help you lose more weight than eating more, but smaller, meals? DailyBurn sums it up nicely: “Certain individuals (those prone to cravings or with special dietary needs) may benefit from consuming multiple meals through the day. However, for the rest of us, the most important factors to consider are the quantity and quality of the food we consume. Whether you eat 2,000 calories of rice in one sitting or spread it out throughout the day, it still has a similar effect, Freedhoff says. Instead, it might be best to focus on eating quality food in a timeframe that fits your individual schedule.”
In other words, “Quality and quantity of foods [as we mentioned above] have greater bearing on metabolism than how often you eat.”
Will Superhero Shredding’s 3-Day Workout Schedule Provide Results?
According to the Superhero Shredding website, their program can help you achieve the same results as movie stars who work out 5 days per week, but in just 3 days. But can it?
As it turns out, while the answer to this question is largely still up in the air, new research conducted by the University of Alabama suggests that working out more might actually cause you to burn less calories over a period of time. According to the University, this was thought to be a result of participants “feeling more energized and strengthened to do more non-workout activities throughout the week,” which led to additional exercise such as walking. Due to this extra activity, participants who worked out less actually burned “225 additional calories each day outside of the gym.”
Granted, there haven’t been many similar studies conducted to back up these findings (not to mention the fact that all participants were women between the ages of 60 and 74), but it may be one more step in changing how we view fitness.
However often you’re working out though, the key to building and muscle and losing weight—while spending less time at the gym—is 1) to make sure you’re maximizing your time when there, and 2) that you’re completing the exercises properly.
