About The Zebra

Founded by Joshua Dziabiak and Adam Lyons, The Zebra is an auto insurance comparison website that provides instant, real-time quotes from hundreds of car insurance companies in seconds, including USAA, GEICO, State Farm, AAA, Allstate, and many more.

And because the process can be completed anonymously, The Zebra claims to help you find the best deals without the spam. As such, the company dubs itself “the Kayak for auto insurance.”

Let’s be honest; if you’ve spent any time searching online for auto insurance comparison websites, you’re probably a bit jaded. After all, many of these types of companies simply capture your information and then sell it to independent agents, who will continuously contact you. But is TheZebra.com any different, and is it worth your time?

We’ll answer these important questions in a moment, but let’s first take a look at how The Zebra works.

How Does TheZebra.com Work?

After landing on The Zebra website, you can begin obtaining personalized auto insurance quotes by choosing the year, make, model, and trim (if known) of your vehicle.

Then, after calculating your results, the website will display all your insurance carrier options on the right-hand portion of the screen, as well as pricing information. On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll be able to enter additional relevant information such as your birthdate, marital status, gender, age first licensed, whether or not you’re currently licensed and insured, citations/accidents, vehicles, other drivers in the household, and more. After you’ve entered this information, you can press the “Update” button to refresh your list of available insurance companies and the associated premiums.

Based on the amount of information you’ve entered, The Zebra will display an “estimate accuracy” ranging between low and high that’s continuously updated throughout the process. Once you get about halfway through, TheZebra.com will ask if you want to save your progress by entering your email address.

Finally, once you’re finished entering all your information, you can click on the Confirm Now button next to the company you’re interested in applying with. Once you do this, a popup will appear that asks for your contact information in case your chosen option isn’t available for one reason or another.

You’ll also be prompted to contact a TheZebra.com licensed agent in order to confirm your quote, help uncover any additional savings, and—presumably—help you purchase a policy (we’ll talk more about this in a moment).

The Zebra Is Not an Insurance Company

First and foremost, similar to other insurance comparison websites such as Compare.com, Get My Insurance, and Best Quotes, The Zebra is not an insurance company. Instead, they help match you with insurance carriers who can provide you with the best coverage and rates based on your specific needs.

The Zebra’s Estimates Are Not Guaranteed

Also, as we’ve mentioned in many of our other insurance comparison website reviews, the rates displayed on The Zebra’s website are wholly dependent on the information you provide. In other words, if you neglected to list an accident or citation, a young driver in the household, or any other “big ticket” items, it can drastically alter your premium.

On top of this, many auto insurance carriers have moved to multi-variant rating (also known as predictive modeling) systems over the past few years, which means that seemingly inconsequential factors, such as quote vs. effective dates, can impact your premium. This also goes for credit rating (also known as insurance score), which is something that The Zebra doesn’t factor into their automated quoting system.

When It Comes to Insurance, Price Isn’t King

Keep in mind that although it’s tempting to always pick the lowest-priced auto insurance option, the few dollars you save each month might come back to bite you in the event of a claim. This is because some carriers will provide added policy benefits (such as replacement cost coverage, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and much more) that could translate into thousands of dollars once a claim occurs.

The Zebra.com Difference

Unlike the other sites mentioned above though, The Zebra doesn’t appear to be a lead generation company that sells your information to independent agents. Instead, it appears that once you’ve chosen a specific company, you’ll have to contact The Zebra directly and speak with a licensed insurance agent, who will then presumably sell you the chosen policy.

In other words, it appears that The Zebra essentially acts as its own lead generation website, after which, one of their agents will help you find an auto policy that meets your needs. However, once you’ve purchased a policy, it’s unclear whether The Zebra will continue to act as your agent (e.g. for billing questions, policy changes, etc.), or if this will be handled by the insurance company directly.

Are The Zebra Customers Pleased with the Service?

Although The Zebra has been in business since 2013, there weren’t any online customer reviews available at the time of our research. The company has been featured in a variety of popular publications, including Inc., Forbes, Wall Street Journal, TIME, and more, where their ease of use and the ability to compare most of the top carriers were the top-cited compliments.

From a company perspective, The Zebra based out of Austin, TX and holds an A+ Better Business Bureau rating, with no closed complaints (as of 3/26/15).

Should You Use The Zebra to Purchase Auto Insurance?

When it comes down to it, The Zebra appears to outshine other auto insurance comparison websites by providing you with real-time estimates, as well as the ability to purchase a policy directly through them once complete. On top of this, since The Zebra provides a completely in-house experience, you won’t have to worry about having your information sold to third-parties, and the resulting spam and unwanted sales calls.

However, keep in mind that your quote is only as accurate as the information you input, so before putting too much stock in your online quote, make sure you contact The Zebra to verify that your rates are accurate.

    It took me to insurance websites that I could have done on my own that reasked the same questions. The responses were too generic. I would really like to see some better responses because what I got was all greatly higher than what I already pay. Maybe people would like to pay a nominal fee to have these things searched, without revealing so much private information until a narrowing down of REAL choices, and not being driven to a website that does not help.

    Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    First, I would like to thank Jim Duffy, for his professionalism, he made it so easy for me to get the insurance that I needed, he also made it possible to lock in on the monthly payments that I can afford. Truth be told, I don't think that I have had a better experience in getting insurance for my car. This is the kind of change I can embrace. Thanks again, Jim for making this a memorable experience!

    Sells info, can't stop the scams

    I have had my email for years, and as soon as I used the Zebra, I have been unable to stop the telemarketers, scammers and in-understandable, non-English speaking "customer service" calls. "We are customer service," and you ask "For who? What is the name of the company?" And they will not answer you. The phishing emails and the disgusting unwanted porn emails because they sell your info to anyone. It's so gross and I had to change my email because of it. Not to mention the wave of insurance salespeople who will not stop emailing months and months and months later. They're like cockroaches; disgusting, slimy infestations of disease-carrying bugs seeking ANY tiny crack to get into and you can't get rid of them.

    Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

      R, that sounds like a terrible experience and absolutely no one that The Zebra has any part of. When you shop for car insurance on The Zebra, you opt to be contacted by a licensed insurance agent to help you finalize your policy, answer any questions you may have and generally make the whole process better and easier for you.

      Our team will call you no more than three times, and if you answer once, we won’t call back again if you told us that you weren’t interested in a quote. The likely scenario here is that you shopped for car insurance on other sites before visiting The Zebra, and those folks sold your information as leads to the people who called you. The Zebra never sells leads and doesn’t engage in the behavior you described, so, unfortunately, we can’t help you with these issues. Thanks R.

    Do not go near website!

    I can't even BEGIN to tell you how livid I am that I ever went to The Zebra. I was getting a new car and needed to compare insurance quotes, so I decided to go check via The Zebra. The website goes out of its way to say they don't give out/sell your phone number but that is LITERALLY NOTHING BUT LIES.

    Not minutes to an hour after I put my info into their site did I start receiving CONSTANT telephone calls from random number after random number with people calling to sell me insurance. No less than 5 calls per day. It has now been FOUR MONTHS since I used The Zebra, and I am STILL receiving 3-4 unsolicited calls per day from random companies masking their numbers to make me pick up so they can sell me insurance, which I have already had for months now.

    The Zebra is the biggest scam out there. If I had any money to my name, I would hit them with a breach of privacy lawsuit in a heartbeat. What a nasty business model, I hope they get what's coming to them.

    BEWARE.

    Horrible

    I was given an estimate over The Zebra for $31 for State Farm. I wanted to buy this quote so I went to their website to buy it, and that quote turned into $260 a month. Horribly misleading. I would call it bait. Wasted my time.

    Now in the past 30 minutes, I've had three calls from fake local numbers, all from The Zebra trying to connect me to an agent. I cannot figure out how to remove my number from their call list.

    Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    Misleading

    I mistakenly understood this article to indicate that The Zebra operated in such a way that my information would only be provided to agents/providers I indicated interest in. However, despite the fact that I stopped entering info into the site when I realized that 1) it wouldn't let me add the 4th driver in our family to the quote request and 2) the estimated quotes for four drivers were coming up much higher than what I currently pay for all five of us, I have been inundated with phone calls today, 15 in the last four hours alone. I guess it was wishful thinking that this site was somehow different/better than any other price comparing site. So disappointed and would not recommend to anyone.

      Hi Leslee. We appreciate the feedback. The Zebra is limited to quoting rates for four drivers at a time because most insurance companies can only write policies with a maximum of four drivers and vehicles. This is typical across the industry, and the workaround is to add the other drivers and vehicles on a separate policy in the same household. Of course, there are companies that make exceptions.

      Also, while we hope that providing quotes for over 200 car insurance companies can yield savings for new customers. Sometimes customers are already paying the lowest possible premium, which is great news!

      Finally, not all insurance policies can be purchased online, so when customers fill out the form, agents may contact you in order to finalize the quotes to help you purchase a policy. We hope this clears up the issues you were having with the website. We’ve also have forwarded your feedback to our team.

    I hopped on thezebra.com after an insurance agent buddy of mine recommended I use them. I recently got kicked off my insurance for some B.S. reason and needed to find a new company. The website showed me a lot of options and I was able to find a company that would help me in my time of need. It's really cool that this site exists and I highly recommend them to anyone who has a similar situation as mine.

    The Zebra

    I just came across TheZebra.com while doing some research on how to shop around for car insurance. My car insurance rates went up earlier this year, so I decided to give them a try and see if they could find me anything cheaper. I put in some info about my car and what kind of insurance I was looking for and BAM! Lower rates! I was then contacted by a Zebra Insurance agent who got me set up with my cheaper insurance. The agent was a total professional and was able to answer all the little questions I had.

    What a wonderful service! A+.

    Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

    This was a total waste of time. I received 16 sales calls the following day. What a set of tossers. Do not use.

    Insurance Zebra - excellent experience

    So all day I've been on the internet trying to find insurance that's not gonna "break the bank." And it's just ridiculous. Typing the same information over and over and over again. And then all the phone calls. It's very annoying, and I have so many other things I need to get done today. I don't really have time for this.

    So just when I was ready to give up, I get a call from this lady that asked me if I was still looking to get auto insurance? I told her yes. She asked a couple more questions and then transferred me to a gentleman named Robert. Robert was amazing. He got me insurance cheaper then I've been able to find. He was able to cut the price almost in half. He answered all my questions, and he was very informative and very polite.

    Now I don't have to keep putting my info into the computer, and I don't have to answer any more phone calls because I now have auto insurance. I would defiantly use this company again in the future. Also, I have and will continue to tell everyone I know about the experience I've had with this company. I'm very thankful and pleased. Thank you The Zebra, and thank you Robert.

    Non-stop spam after filling out the forms. The rates weren't great, and they immediately try to get you to simply call an agent.

While insurance rates are made up of a variety of factors (certainly range in price from company to company), sometimes a customer is already getting the best rate possible through their existing insurance company. That’s a great thing! Also, not all companies allow customers to purchase an insurance policy online, which is why you might be prompted to call one of our licensed agents to complete this step.
